Yeh but that's the inland road through Amberley which was a bit roughed up but the army already did a truck run through it with several tons of supplies, including portaloos, loo rolls, pet food, rice, pasta and flour.

A road has been cleared to the seaside town of Kaikoura on New Zealand’s east coast four days after it was cut off by a magnitude 7.8 quake that devastated the North Canterbury region of the South Island.
The inland road to Kaikoura was opened on Thursday morning, but only for trucks and four-wheel drive vehicles as it remained unstable and badly damaged.
A convoy of 27 army vehicles loaded with relief supplies was immediately sent to the town.

Japanese navy in WW2 saved the lives of British sailors from certain drowning, after a naval battle.
I remember the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, I thought that My Friend was okay as he lived way u north in Tauronga , little did I know he was at a business conference at the epicentre.
Then after Japans kind rescuers helped save the lives of many in NZ in 2011, they returned home only to face their own enormous aftershock.
The Pacific pattern means the Nippons are next.
