Chinese jets in "unsafe" interception of US spy plane over South China Sea

Two Chinese fighters have carried out an "unsafe" intercept of a US military aircraft over the South China Sea, the Pentagon says.

The incident happened in international airspace on 17 May as the US maritime reconnaissance aircraft carried out a routine patrol in the area, it added.

Tensions in the region have increased recently, with China and the US trading accusations over military activity.

Several nations claim territory in the resource-rich South China Sea.

A military official quoted by the Associated Press news agency said the US pilot was forced to descend about 200ft (60m) to avoid a collision.

The defence department said it was addressing the issue through military and diplomatic channels.

"Over the past year, DoD has seen improvements in PRC actions, flying in a safe and professional manner," the statement added, using the initials for People's Republic of China.

    The South China Sea dispute

Washington has accused Beijing of militarising the South China Sea, which is also an important shipping route.

China in turn has criticised increased US naval patrols and exercises in Asia.

What is the South China Sea dispute?

Rival countries have wrangled over territory in the South China Sea for centuries, but tension has steadily increased in recent years.

Its islets and waters are claimed in part or in whole by Taiwan, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.

China has backed its expansive claims with island-building and naval patrols, while the US says it opposes restrictions on freedom of navigation and unlawful sovereignty claims - by all sides.

The frictions have sparked concern that the area is becoming a flashpoint with possible global consequences.

A few weeks ago the Americans were sniveling about the way the Russians fly their airplanes. Grow a pair, or stay in your own airspace.

At least the Luftwaffe didn't cry "unfair" about the way the British flew their Spitfires and Hurricanes, but then they didn't have Tammy Tampon flying military planes.

Yes I know, but that doesn't change the silliness of crying about how military aircraft are flown. It's called intimidation, and apparently the Russians and Chinese are both making the US act like crybabies.
Stay home and you won't have to contend with Chinese or Russian pilots.

    stay in your own airspace
    Jaysus muppet. International airspace.

Fuck, the idea of Chinese + fighter jet = catastrophe. Couple weeks ago they crashed one of theirs into a factory. A factory in their own country.

The US would outright own the fuck out them in a battle of the skies (and seas, and land etc etc.)

It's possible that what the US considers as "international airspace", the Chinese consider it their living room with an airstrip design carpet, etc., yes.

The Chinese shoot anything vaguely American, British or European down, and the world will proceed onward to WW3. Their are itchy trigger fingers out there.

    Don't you realize that?

I fully realize that. But if you give the Chinese an inch they take your arm, and don't stop until they've taken everything they can.

Someone has to stand up to their bullyboy behaviour, and the neighbouring countries don't have the military might to do so.

It is imperative that America, Australia, Japan and hopefully NATO reign in their boorish behaviour. NOW, before it's too late.

I have spent some part of my working life as flight crew on board military aircraft carrying out surveillance in various parts of the world - what the popular media like to call 'spy planes'. It was a time of what was euphemistically called "heightened tension".

We were regularly intercepted on the edges of international airspace, though some nations had different ideas about what constituted international airspace. Some of the interceptions were professionally conducted, some not quite so competently. They were definitely 'unsafe'. It got even more interesting at night ... We did not regard our jobs as a game, and we knew what we were doing and why.

If we ever left international airspace, we were never intercepted ...

None of these incidents bore any resemblance to a World War II dogfight, as my late uncle would attest.

No one is playing games here. China asserting rights of ownership in international waters and airspace is unacceptable.

Your idea of giving in meekly to proposterous Chinese claims is even more ludicrous than those claims.

You might want to investigate "ownership" of many specks or dirt around the world, and how achieved, before you select China as an unwelcome landlord. Hence certain rights and responsibilities accrue to the owner of the specks of dirt and certain rules apply to any that approach the said owned, specks of dirt.

So I assume that the American flight could easily be to blame then, and only when a Chinese plane did not deviated from it's flight, the merkins start crying and wailing like the bunch of bitches they are?

Go home merkin military. You are not "exceptional" - you are a pain in the arse, the global terrorists, and the biggest risk to world security there is.

It's entirely possible that I have a greater understanding of military conflict than you. While the opposite is also a possibility, the only reason that China has not fully enforced it's claims on the South China Sea, is due to the presence of superior military forces in the form of the US military.
In hardware terms alone China understands it is along way behind the US. Capability is another issue that worries the Chinese. That is why they are expanding their equipment budget and the reason why the US focus is on the Pacific rather than anywhere else.

The Chinese are enforcing their claims through the correct channels. Diplomatically with it's neighbours, legally when a legal dispute arises and militarily by letting an arrogant outsider aware that an unwelcome competitor will not be tolerated. Or do you mean by not fully enforcing it's claim you mean it hasn't bombed any country yet?

Pray tell me which are the superior military forces which Ameristan has threatening China? Please don't include Australia and Japan in your threat equation.

Maybe the reason Ameristan is allegedly focused on Asia is a signal that they are concerned that Asia has been lost.

    1. To wage a war one needs weapons.
    2. To wage a war one needs a delivery system which can deliver the weapons.
    3. To wage war one needs a leader prepared to go to war.

I am suspect about items 2 and 3 for Ameristan and none for China.

Warfare, currently, is a more amorphus creature. There are in and outs, one on one fights, there are proxy wars, there are political uprisings, there are financial wars.

If one takes the "military" war as suggested here by some. I question that Ameristan, other than a global nuclear war, could do much against China. Does the it have a means of delivering it's military hardware and might to China? Does it have a leader who will go to war? Does it have any means of delivering it's armed forces - army, navy and air-force to fight a war in mainland China or even Asia. The moat, the pacific ocean, that assists Ameristani defence helps the Chinese too.

As for the other types of warfare

    1. Proxy wars/Terrorists - the SCO has shown a track record to the world, Ameristan only failure.
    2. Financial - Maybe a draw. But there are rumours of Asian programmers being very good.
    3. In and out - The SCO covers half the world, nobody is getting in and out, fast.
    4. Political takeovers in Russia or China - I suspect Ameristani public opinion would stifle such action before either of it's Asian competitors.

China is so concerned that it and it's citizens are investing ( getting rid of US$) in projects all around the world. Ameristan doesn't invest anymore in building things, it struts around the world shitting everywhere and not noticing the abomination it is causing, or if it does has no way of countering the negative feed back except by bombing some more.

The Philippines has just installed a new President, the Taiwanese likewise, the Laos government has good relations with China as does the Vietnamese, look at the agreements they have signed and honoured over the past years. Compare with Ameritan, their promises broken are every where you look.

But as you suggest, I am not a military man so may be very wrong. But I believe a country without a strong leader, supported by it's committed citizens cannot win a war, except a global nuclear war.

Let's deal with these issues one at a time.

China has claimed the whole of the South China Sea as it's own. Many oof the areas claim are inside the territorial waters of other Sovereign states. It has been reclaiming land around disputed islands and building port facilities and airfield there. That alone would be enough to start a war any where else in the world. China is flexing it's muscles to test US resolve. So the US sends out air patrols, increases the concentration of surface vessels in the US fleet and refuses to be intimidated or provoked.
    Types of warfare
    Conventional
    Theatre Strategic (Short range nuclear)
    Nuclear

As this link demonstrates, the US beats the Chinese into a cocked hat on any level of conventional or strategic warfare capability. The US has recent conventional warfare experience and highly trained well equipped troops. On numbers alone it would not be difficult to face down the Chinese, but the US also has better equipment and recent experience of using it in combat.

The first phase of warfare is to establish air superiority. Have a look at the comparative strengths and tell us how you think the Chinese would stack up against the US.

Neither side wants war because war is expensive and dangerous. The last thing either side wants is attrition of manpower and equipment. Most of it is best left to diplomacy. Today te US has dominance in almost any military scenario so it can afford to use diplomacy backed by a very big stick. Next year or more likely 10 years from now, China may be catching up.

I won't mention the Aussies or the Japanese, but you should not count against the goodwill of other US allies in the region. South Korea and the Philippines will reciprocate with US protection of their rights against a common enemy if necessary.

    With who?

So you would support Russia or China sending it's military around "starting wars' with the US in all of the countries they have invaded?

So I was born in 1976. This is a list of all the nations invaded, attacked or "intervened in" by the USA since that time. Pull up a list of countries that China has invaded or attacked in that time - you might then see who the aggressors and world terrorists really are, so long as you forget the lies and false flags by the Merkins that has justified their wars each time.
