Switzerland halts citizenship process for Muslim students' family

Switzerland has suspended the citizenship process for the family of two teenage Muslim brothers after the boys' refusal to shake hands with their female teachers sparked a national debate over religious freedoms.

The brothers, aged 14 and 15, had informed education officials in the northern municipality of Therwil that physical contact with women who are not family members violated their faith.

They were then exempted from a Swiss custom of pupils shaking teachers' hands, with Therwil officials instructing them to avoid contact with male teachers as well to avoid gender discrimination.

But the compromise sparked a heated response from leading Swiss politicians including Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga who insisted that "shaking hands is part of (Swiss) culture".

On Tuesday, authorities in the canton of Basel-Country where Therwil is located, said that naturalisation proceedings for the family had been put on hold.

Basel-Country spokesman Adrian Baumgartner, in an email, confirmed a report from the ATS news agency on the suspension.

The report also noted that such suspensions are common in citizenship procedures as authorities often require supplemental information about the families concerned.

Amid the media storm that surrounded the handshake exemption, Basel-Country requested an expert legal opinion, which Therwil pledged to follow.

The father of the two boys, an imam based in Basel and a Syrian national, moved to Switzerland in 2001 and was granted asylum.

Basel's migration office was seeking more information about the circumstances under which the father's asylum request was approved.

Switzerland's population of eight million includes an estimated 350,000 Muslims.

Previous similar disputes have centred on Muslim parents who demanded that their daughters be exempt from swimming lessons.

Muslim families have however secured victories in court against schools which sought to ban the full face veil.

Most children is Switzerland shake the hands of their teachers as they go into class and as they leave.

It may seem to be a bit old fashioned but families and the school authorites think it teaches kids respect for their elders.

Those two, are stupid. and disrespective towards their teacher. And it shows another sick side to how male "integrated" children are brought up.

They are not integrated at all.

There is a whole hoo ha about this in Switzerland. A lot of the funny stuff is about the fact that they don't shake the hand of a female teacher but they can run around and grab the crotch of any female the want to. And that will be all alright.

It has been said on this forum and others, even Swiss ones, the question is what are all these "kids" going to do when the Summer arrives and the girls and women are wearing rather more skimpy clothing.

If they can abuse women in the winter, when women are wearing jeans and puffa jackets etc....

    It is rather horrific.

If they can't even shake the hand of their teacher.

They can fuck off, And do they feel ostrociced because they have to be taught by a female teacher who is probably a Swiss and not wearing a hijab.

    They can fuck off.

Bye Bye. Say good bye to your wonderful life just because you think women are dirty.

Muslims are hypocrites, they cherry-pick the bits they want out of the koran, sunnahs and hadiths in support of their prejudices.

The sooner Europeans wake up to this Islamization by stealth that Muslims try and foist on us, the better.

Switzerland is not part of the EU, so not under EU's PC laws, so how in the world did a law allowing full face veils, in schools and elsewhere get passed there?

That is an insanity that Swiss lawmakers will in future regret.

If Daddy's an Imam, why isn't he sending them to a private, Muslim school where they can learn to hate without interference?

@Patsy: They must have madrassas there, spreading the message of hate and intolerance, no?

There are no private Muslim Schools in Switzerland and Islam is not taught in schools there.

Muslims can attend their mosques and masjids as usual, but without encroaching upon Swiss citizens' rights and culture, so no yodelling muezzin in minarets (only 4 in Switzerland and a ban on building any more mosques and minarets).

    UPDATE
The ban on face veils and burkhas has been approved, and any one flouting that ban faces a fine of around 9,000 Swiss franks or 6,500 pounds.

I reckon, and the Swiss legislation ought to be used as an effective social and legal pattern by other European countries if they want to save their skins and future from Islamic abuse.

Not in the whole of Switzerland.

The law only applies in one canton - Ticino.

    You're right.

A step,in the right direction though.

"According to one estimate at the time of the Ticino vote, only around 100 Muslim women in Switzerland covered their faces.

In November, the federal government ruled that the decision by citizens of the Italian-speaking canton did not violate federal law, although it judged it to be inopportune.

The ban in Ticino is similar to a French law that the European Court in Strasbourg ruled in July last year was compatible with the European convention for human rights."
Right-wing group seeks national face veil ban - The Local

Switzerland could be the next European country to ban wearing the burka in public if campaigners are able to secure enough support for a national referendum. The Swiss canton of Ticino last year banned the wearing of the garments, prompting a country-wide debate on whether to roll the ban out nationally.

Three years ago the people of Ticino, an Italian-speaking canton in southern Switzerland, voted to ban the public wearing of the burka, which fully covers the face and body. Women caught wearing the garment, including tourists to the region, face fines of £6,500.

“Those who want to integrate are welcome irrespective of their religion,” explained Giorgio Ghiringhelli, who wrote the proposal. “But those who rebuff our values and aim to build a parallel society based on religious laws, and want to place it over our society, are not welcome.”

Last November, following assurances from the Swiss parliament that the measure does not violate federal law, the ban was enacted prompting a nationwide debate on the matter. Some states say they would welcome a similar ban, while others have come out against the idea. However, Member of Parliament Walter Wobmann of the Swiss People’s Party is confident that the idea is a popular one.

Mr. Wobmann is spearheading a campaign to collect 100,000 signatures within the next year, in order to hold a national referendum on the issue. If successful, Swiss citizens will get to vote on enacting a similar law to that in Ticino, which specifically prohibits Muslim head-dress. Exceptions would be made for mosques and other religious locations, as well as those who wear a veil for medical reasons or as protection against the cold during winter.

In his application, Wobmann has made it clear that his motive in raising the matter is the promotion of equality and western values, writing: “No one should be able to compel another person to conceal their face because of their gender.”

It is a position which has attracted feminists to the cause, including the Swiss women’s rights activist Julia Onken. Explaining her position in a recent blog, she called the burka a “material prison” which “makes life no longer worth living.”

“The patriarchal brainwashing seems to have done a great job once again, if a party president in earnest says the burka is nothing more fashionable than a clothes variant,” she said.

“The burka has nothing to do with a veil; a veil is a lightweight, transparent fabric which could certainly be stowed in a tiny handbag. The burka, however, is a deep black, opaque material prison that hinders the wearer massively in their freedom of movement.

“How can a burka wearer use a public restroom without getting hopelessly entangled in their material prison, or maintain even minimum hygiene? How can a burka wearer eat or drink on the go? A life in a burka is unimaginable. It is the opposite of equality in all areas for men and women.”

Her arguments are supported by The International League for Women’s Rights, reportes The Express, which has said that “the full-face veil, by literally burying the body and the face, constitutes a true deletion of the woman as an individual in public.”

A poster campaign in favour of the ban has already been rolled out, focusing on the anti-liberal nature of burkas as well as security concerns.

    If the ban is enforced, Switzerland will become the fourth European country with a national ban on the wearing of the burka;

France was the first to implement a ban, followed by Belgium and the Netherlands. France’s ban was challenged in the European Court of Human Rights in 2014, but was upheld after judges accepted the French government’s argument that it promoted “a certain idea of living together”.

The campaign is likely to be received well in Switzerland: in 2009 the people of Switzerland shocked their European neighbours by voting in favour of a national ban on the building of minarets by 57.5 per cent to 42.5 per cent. The result came as something of a surprise as Switzerland’s government and Parliament had made it abundantly clear that they opposed the ban.

More recently the people voted “against mass immigration” by an extremely slender majority of 50.33 per cent. How to implement the vote in light of Switzerland’s membership of the EU’s Schengen free movement area is still being discussed.

The cantons of Basel, Bern, Schwyz, Solothurn and Fribourg rejected similar proposals.

A nationwide ban on burkas in public places was rejected by the Swiss parliament in 2012.

    As for the "projected referendum"...
If successful. If they get enough signatures, there will be a vote. Let me know when they get enough signatures.

The Egyptian parliament is drafting a law banning women from wearing the niqab veil. The ban will apply to wearing the clothing in public places and government institutions, it has been reported.

The full-face veil is worn by some followers of Islam and typically covers all of the wearer’s face other than their eyes. The clothing is common in Egypt which is a predominantly Muslim country.

MP Amna Nosseir, professor of comparative jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University, who has backed the ban, said that wearing the veil is not a requirement of Islam and in fact has non-Islamic origins. She has argued that it is a Jewish tradition which appeared in the Arabian Peninsula prior to Islam and that a variety of Quran passages contradict its use. Instead, she has advocated that the Quran calls for modest clothing and covered hair, but does not require facial covering.
