The White House was briefly placed on lockdown Friday afternoon when a person brandished a weapon at one of the security gates surrounding the mansion. The suspect, reported to be a man, was shot and taken into custody, where is condition was unknown.

Less than an hour after the incident was reported, the Secret Service posted on social media that "all Secret Service protectees are safe," and the lockdown was lifted.

Officials said President Obama was not at the White House at the time, but was instead spending part of the day at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where he was playing golf. Vice President Joe Biden was reported to be safe within the White House complex.

A White House official said, "No one within or associated with the White House was injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for. The president has been made aware of the situation."
