Several people stabbed at Massachusetts mall

Several people were stabbed at a shopping mall outside Boston on Tuesday evening, authorities said, in what police described as an "active scene."

The Taunton Police Department said on Twitter it was investigating "multiple stabbings" at the Silver City Galleria mall and on a nearby street.

A mall security guard declined to disclose any information about the incident.

A dispatcher with the Taunton police said the situation was ongoing, but contained. He declined to provide further information.

Taunton is about 40 miles (64 km) south of Boston.

Taunton Fire Department dispatcher Mike Marshall said reports started coming in around 6:37 p.m and that the department sent out "a lot" of ambulances. He added that preliminary reports indicated the suspected assailant had been shot, but he could not confirm the information.

Witnesses told local television station WHDH-TV that they saw people running out of the mall and heard gunfire. The station reported that people in the area saw police officers with guns drawn and that the mall had been evacuated and put on lockdown.

The Massachusetts State Police said it was assisting local police with the incident.

Unless an attacker shouts " God is Great" it's not international news, and hence of less interest.

Suspect among 3 dead after stabbings at Massachusetts home, mall

TAUNTON, Mass. -- Two people were stabbed to death and several others were hurt Tuesday when a man went on a rampage at at home and a nearby shopping mall near Boston before being shot an killed by an off-duty sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

CBS Boston station WBZ reported the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said 28-year-old Arthur Darosa crashed a car outside a home in Taunton, walked inside and stabbed an 80-year-old woman and another woman. The 80-year-old was taken to a hospital, where she later died. The other woman was being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said Darosa then drove to the Silver City Galleria mall and crashed a car through the front of a Macy's store.

"We saw the car just like dove right in," a woman told wbz. "It honestly happened like the fastest thing."

Darosa assaulted multiple people inside the store before walking to a restaurant in the mall and stabbing four people, including a 56-year-old man who later died, authorities said.

One of the victims who was attacked at the mall was a pregnant woman, a witness told WBZ.

An off-duty Plymouth County sheriff's deputy fatally shot Darosa. According to Massachusetts State Police, there was no further threat to the public.

"The suspect's motive remains under investigation but at this point we are aware of no nexus to terrorism," State Police said.

"Tragedy certainly hit the city of Taunton hard here this evening," Mayor Thomas Hoye said. "Certainly our heartfelt prayers go out to all of the victims of this senseless tragedy. I'd like to thank the off-duty sheriff for if it wasn't for his heroic actions there could have been more loss of life."

Taunton is about 40 miles south of Boston.

Deadly rampage attacker was in psych ward day before, family says

TAUNTON, Mass. —A man who went on a deadly rampage in Taunton Tuesday night before he was shot and killed had depression and was just released from treatment, according to his family.

Arthur DaRosa, 28, went on a stabbing spree in a Taunton neighborhood and mall that left two people dead and several others injured Tuesday evening. The family had no idea DaRosa had committed these acts until his name was mentioned by media outlets.

DaRosa, known as AJ, was manic and having suicidal thoughts on Monday, according to his sister, Kerri Devries.

Devries said DaRosa told her Monday that he heard voices, including the devil telling him that suicide would be the right thing to do. She called 911.

"The ambulance picked him up at 5 p.m. on Monday. They discharged him at 4 a.m. on Tuesday," aunt Liz RaRosa said. "They didn't treat him for what his sickness was or his mental illness. They treated him for something else."

She said he spent Monday night in Morton Hospital's psychiatric ward and was discharged early Tuesday morning.

Being nuts wasn't covered under Medicaid. Couldn't make any money, so the hospital kicked him out.
