Grandmother, 90, faces police probe over claims she 'killed her rape victim daughter'

Grandmother, 90, faces police probe over claims she 'killed her rape victim daughter's newborn babies and buried them in her back garden'

Irish police have launched a three-week search for the bodies of two babies reportedly murdered by their grandmother in the 1970s.
A woman in her 50s has claimed she was repeatedly raped by a paedophile gang operating on the south side of Dublin while he was aged between 12 and 14.
The victim claims her father was among the men who raped her at her home in south west Dublin over the course of several years

The Irish police have confirmed they have launched a search at the suburban address which could take as long as three weeks.
Specialist officers will dig up the back garden as well as demolish an outbuilding in the home which is located in a former Dublin Corporation estate.
A garda spokesman confirmed the search was underway: 'The result of this search will determine the future direction of the investigation.'

The woman's father, who she accuses of rape, has since died.
She claims her mother smothered the babies within hours of their birth to cover up the abuse.
It is understood, officers will want to talk to the woman's mother as part of their investigation.
A source to the Irish Independent: 'This investigation has been ongoing for some time, as it's a historical case it takes longer than normal to corroborate details.
'The case is being dealt with by local officers from Sundrive Road, backed up by national divisions who specialise in crimes of a sexual nature as well as those of a historical nature.'
'Despite the alleged crimes having been committed a number of decades ago, the investigation is very much live.'
UTV Ireland reported that a forensic anthropologist and a forensic archaeologist have been brought in to assist with the search.
Heavy equipment has been brought in to assist with the dig, while specialist ground radar will be used to determine whether the ground had previously been disturbed.
