Russian fighter jets close overflights U.S. destroyer

The USS Donald Cook sailing in the Baltic Sea this week has had two extremely close overflights by unarmed Russian fighter jets, CNN has learned.

Navy officials are not commenting publicly, but inside the Pentagon there is an intense discussion about releasing video and still photos of the Russian encounter to demonstrate the danger the jets posed to the ship, a U.S. official told CNN.

The initial reports indicate the two concerning encounters occurred Tuesday night in international waters. A third overflight, at a more acceptable distance, happened Sunday, according to the source.

The ship, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, also had a Polish helicopter on board as part of routine training, according to the official, leading to some speculation in military circles that the Russians were also "sending a message to Poland," the official said.

A second U.S. defense official told CNN that the overflights were conducted by a Russian SU-24 and helicopter. Flight operations by the Polish helicopter were interrupted because one of the overflight was so close.

The Cook had been shadowed by a Russian intelligence-gathering ship for some time before the aircraft encounter. The U.S. crew had radioed the Russian ship that it was conducting routine operations, according to the official.

There are often encounters between U.S. ships and aircraft and their Russian counterparts, but as long as they are conducted safely, there is minimal concern. This time, however, there were incidents that led the U.S. crew to conclude that the incidents were unsafe.

It could not immediately be learned how close the unarmed Russian fighters flew to the ship and at what altitude.

I'd be interested in seeing the videos if anyone finds a link. Unarmed but at what altitude and which side of the ship did they pass.

Anyone know the rules? 200' starboard side?

I think that before you even peruse the links, you'll understand that the Iraq and Afghani wars (based on the 9/11 false flag and heroin procurement) have killed/maimed/displaced and left millions homeless and without basic needs such as water.
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

And after that, you can go down the pub.

    Ha!

So what would your country look like without US bombing during WWII? You would be eating sourkraut and doing the goosestep without the help from the 8th Air Force.

Also, we are not counting displaced/maimed in your slaughtered comment. Stick to your original statement please.

As a sidenote, how many did the British slaughter in their 'British Empire' ? Pot calling kettle black eh?

The US entered the war late. As Churchill said; America will always do the right thing, once they have tried everything else.
Russia is being deliberately provocative, just to try and gain the moral high ground.

The Baltic is a big body of water bordered by many countries including Russia,
wonder how close to Russian territorial waters this US ship was at the time ?
The US has shown in the past that they are not averse to to intimidating, provoking and even attacking others on flimsy sometimes straight out BS excuses. Russia has every right to be suspicious of the US being close to their waters.

While the US navy have every right to be in international waters the Russians also have every right to be in international air space.

Is there any law that says the US have the right to deny others the use of international air space or waters just because they happen to be there ?

8th Airforce would have been up the creek without a paddle were it not for Fighter command and radar.

"History is written by the victors" to cover their bloody war crimes, little to be nationalistic or proud off in any off our countries pasts!
The people that fund the wars haven't changed though!
History - depending on who is writing it will show the US & UK to be the total murdering pricks of this era!

No, but there is protocols that are supposed to be followed in terms of how close and how low militaries come to within each other.

The was Russia pushing the edges, not the US.

They are not. So assuming it is international waters and the Russians had clearence to fly over the countries to get there they have just as much right to be there as anyone else.

Get a life, or a grip - fools falling for the Merkin World Police lie all the time make me sick.

Guess the Russian filth are making hay while the sun shines.

Their economy is deep in the shit, government coffers are near empty, so they may as well take the planes for a few joy rides before they park them up to rust in the sun.

Wonder what would happen if the US was the subject of sanctions (for completely spurious reasons although in the US case, they would be completely justified)? Their economy flushed down the toilet. Would all the simpering fools who buy their propaganda still be on their knees choked up in their love for the satanic rulers of the earth?

Fools that are cheering on the US in their faux war against russia are the ones who are allowing the US to move towards their long stated aim of a 3rd world war. You really want that?
