Brussels manhunt after gunfire in raid

Brussels manhunt after gunfire in raid 'on Paris suspects'

Belgian security forces are hunting for at least two men after shots were fired at police during a counter-terrorism raid in the capital, Brussels.
Three officers were reportedly hurt, one of them seriously. Streets in the suburb of Forest have been sealed off .
A BBC reporter at the scene says there has been more gunfire subsequently.

The raid is linked to the Paris attacks which killed 130 people last November. Islamic State (IS) militants have claimed responsibility for the attacks.
After Tuesday's incident, police said they were pursuing at least two suspects who had escaped over rooftops.

Eric Van Der Sypt, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor, told AFP news agency that "police were fired at" during the raid on Tuesday afternoon. He added that the raid was "linked to the Paris attacks investigation".

A heavy exchange of fire was reported by witnesses
A major police operation is now under way, with a helicopter flying overhead.

The BBC's Damian Grammaticas at the scene says the whole area is flooded with police, with every access road being blocked.
He says the operation appears to be focusing on Rue de la Station road.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying that French police officers were also taking part in the Brussels raid.

Since the 13 November attacks, officials have identified most of the people they believe to have carried out the assaults.
Most of the suspects have either died during the attacks or been killed in later police raids.
But two suspects - Salah Abdeslam and Mohamed Abrini - are still on the run.
In addition, 11 people have been arrested and charged in Belgium in connection with the killings. Another eight are still in detention.

    Update.

Brussels raid: High alert after Paris-linked raid
    3 hours ago

Brussels remains on high alert as a major police operation continues following a raid linked to November's Islamist attacks in Paris.
Up to two suspects are thought to be on the run after police raided a flat in the suburb of Forest.
Four police officers were wounded and a suspect armed with a Kalashnikov was shot dead outside the apartment, the Belgian prosecutor's office
    said.

It also said the investigation was likely to continue through the night.
The raid was linked to last year's Paris attacks in which 130 people died. Islamic State (IS) militants have claimed the attacks.
French police also took part in Tuesday's operation. One of the officers wounded in the raid was a French policewoman, officials said.

The area around the apartment in Forest was blocked off

There was relief for local residents as local schools and kindergartens were evacuated safely

The federal prosecutor's office said the police had gone to search an apartment in the southern suburb of Forest at about 15:00 (14:00GMT) local time.

"During this operation, one or several people opened fire on the police as they came through the door," it said in a statement.
Three officers were injured then and a fourth in a later exchange of gunfire, it said. All four suffered only light wounds, officials say.

"A suspect armed with a Kalashnikov" was also killed at around 18:00 in the street outside the flat, the prosecutors' statement also said.
The dead suspect has not yet been identified. However, a prosecutor's spokesman had earlier made clear it was not Salah Abdeslam - one of two suspects still on the run after the 13 November attacks in Paris.

French police sources had said earlier that he was not the target of Tuesday's raid.
The operation brought the area - close to railway lines used by high-speed trains to London and Paris - to a standstill.
Two local schools and two kindergartens were in lockdown for several hours before being evacuated by police.
While the operation at the flat has finished, a police source told the BBC that their search was widening - and could possibly involve a second location.

The prosecutor's office said the investigation is "actively continuing, day and night" but gave no other details.
Anna Holligan at the scene says a huge police presence remains, with heavily armed officers on the streets and helicopters hovering overhead.
She says it is still unclear how many, if any, suspects remain at large.

Brussels raid over Paris attacks: Dead gunman 'was Algerian'

A terror suspect shot dead during a raid in Brussels on Tuesday has been identified as an Algerian national, Mohammed Belkaid, officials say.
He was killed while firing upon police from an apartment in the Forest suburb, a prosecutors' spokesman said.

Police are still hunting for two suspects who were in the apartment.
The raid was linked to an investigation into the jihadist gun-and-bomb attacks in Paris that killed 130 people last November.

    Again? No gunfire, ENT.

French media reported that three men and a woman were detained at dawn in the 18th arrondissement of Paris and the nearby northern department of Seine-Saint-Denis.
They said at least one of those arrested had a prior conviction and had been under house arrest since last month, under new rules imposed after the November attacks.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve ... warned people "to remain extremely cautious regarding some information on a planned and imminent violent action. We arrest people every day."

    Back in Belgium...

"Shots have been heard in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek as police launched anti-terrorist raids there, Belgian media report.

They say one person was wounded during the operation. This has not been officially confirmed.
Belgian PM Charles Michel had to urgently leave an EU-Turkey summit in Brussels, a BBC reporter says.

Earlier, fingerprints of Paris attack suspect Salah Abdeslam were found in a Brussels flat raided this week".

Brussels raids: Paris attack suspect Abdeslam arrested
    24 minutes ago

Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam has been wounded and arrested in a raid in Brussels, officials say.
They said Abdeslam, who has been on the run since the November attacks, was wounded in the leg as police moved in on a flat in the Molenbeek area.

"We got him" said Theo Francken, Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, on Twitter (in Flemish).

Abdeslam is a key suspect in the jihadist attacks in Paris which 130 people died.
Abdeslam's fingerprints were found in a Brussels flat raided on Tuesday.

But Belgian prosecutors told the BBC it was not clear exactly when he was at the flat because the prints could not be dated.
Belgian PM Charles Michel had to urgently leave an EU-Turkey summit in Brussels, a BBC reporter says.

One man - identified as Algerian national Mohamed Belkaid and linked to the Paris attacks - was shot dead during the raid in the southern Forest suburb on Tuesday.

    Map of Brussels

Officials said at the time they believed as many as two other suspects may have escaped.
Abdeslam, a 26-year-old French national born in Brussels, had lived in Molenbeek before the 13 November attacks.

He is believed to have returned to Belgium immediately after the attacks, in which his brother Brahim blew himself up.

He has been the subject of a massive manhunt since the attacks, claimed by militants from the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.

Officials have identified most of the people they believe to have carried out the assaults.
Most of the suspects either died during the attacks or were killed in subsequent police raids.

Parts of Brussels were sealed off for days after the Paris massacre amid fears of a major incident. A number of suspected attackers lived in the Belgian capital.

France's involvement with Arabs has been a long story, from Palestine through to North Africa.

The result is a lot of cross breeding, note the swarthy skin of a lot of French people, especially in the south.

Arabs there will either integrate nicely or become a society of misfitting half-breeds.
