Thread: Soccer star Adam Johnson found guilty on 1 count of child sex

Johnson, who discovered his fate at Bradford Crown Court in the north of England Wednesday, was cleared of another similar charge.

He had admitted to kissing her but said that the encounter did not go any further. The girl told the court that Johnson put his hands down her pants and she performed an oral sex act on him. The charge related to the girl performing oral sex on him weren't proved and Johnson was cleared of that.

"Adam Johnson was idolised by many young fans for his football career," said Gerry Wareham of the Crown Prosecution Service. "However, he chose to exploit that fame to actively pursue a 15-year-old girl for his own sexual gratification, in full knowledge of her age.

"Adam Johnson knew that what he was doing was wrong and went to great lengths to hide it," added Wareham.

"He encouraged his young victim to delete any traces of their online contact and, when she reported what had happened to police, he initially claimed to be unaware of her true age and told police that he had only ever kissed her.

"The victim in this case has endured months of abuse and personal attacks online. Had Adam Johnson wished to do so, he could have spared her further alarm and distress."

Johnson's lawyer did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Johnson, who last played for England in August 2012, was arrested in March 2015 and was initially suspended by Sunderland before returning to the team a fortnight later.

Sunderland, which had initially declined to comment on the grounds the case was ongoing, then chose to sack the midfielder last month in light of his guilty plea. Following Wednesday's verdict, the club sought to clarify its stance, saying had it known all along that Johnson would plead guilty at any time it would have terminated his employment "immediately."

"This has been an extremely difficult time for all involved," Sunderland said in a statement on its website. "The victim and her family have endured an unimaginable ordeal in the last 12 months and we trust that they will now be allowed to move on with their lives without further intrusion or public scrutiny."

Sportswear firm Adidas also confirmed to CNN last month that it had terminated its sponsorship deal with the player following his guilty plea.

According to Northeast regional newspaper The Evening Chronicle, Johnson will be forced to sign the sex offenders register.

Johnson began his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Manchester City and then to Sunderland.

While playing for City between 2010 and 2012, Johnson won the Premier League title and the FA Cup.

Frankly, the outrage is somewhat exaggerated and bordering on the hysterical. In my day at school just about every girl aged 15 had all been fingered and fondled to some extent except for the mooses and swottie botties. Given some of the precocious little minxes about these days it's a wonder not more are out there luring chaps to their doom.

Obviously this fella is no saint and deserves to be punished but it is a bit strange the way it is completely legal on her 16th birthday but the bloke is a *child molester* (one of the worst smears possible on a male's reputation) the day before.

For consensual statutory rape I think they should have 2 sliding scales for sentencing to take into account 2 factors

1. Her age

15 year old should get 70% discount on the sentence
14 year old should get 30% discount on the sentence

2. Their age difference

Less than 1 year 100% discount
Less then 2 years 80% discount
Less then 3 years 60% discount
Less then 4 years 40% discount
Less then 5 years 20% discount

The discounts should be compounded to account for both factors

You cannot even engage in a rational discussion about these matters without some bone-head trying to peddle his witch-hunt credentials to impress the crowd.

There should be a separate charge of 'underage sex' for sexually mature 14 and 15 year olds especially where the offender is not much older.

'Paedophile' and 'child sex offender' are very inflammatory terms and should be reserved for offences involving younger children not post-pubescent teenagers.

At 15/16 i was looking for older girls and at his age i was a million miles from even thinking of 15 yr olds. Fooked up he is.

^^ There is, or at least I'm pretty sure there is and it depends on the age gap and the sexual maturity of the couple. A couple of teens, say 17 vs 14 and the offence is pretty trivial.

However, the rules are also based on influence the offender may have and in this respect a teacher, doctor, footballer have a lot more influence than another schoolkid or candlestick maker.

Even in European countries where the age of consent may be lower it still depends on who....and age of the couple.
