U.S. Sex Offenders Challenge New Passport Law

SAN FRANCISCO – A civil rights group has filed a lawsuit challenging a law that will require sex offenders to be identified on their passports.

President Obama signed the International Megan’s Law bill into law on Monday following Congress passing the bill last week.

The California Reform Sex Offender Laws filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, challenging the laws, which requires the Secretary of State to add “unique identifiers” to the passports of all registered sex offenders.

Passports today are used as a primary form of identification as well for entry into a foreign country.

A passport symbol that identifies an individual as a registered sex offender could place at significant risk that person as well as others traveling with them, including family members and business colleagues, the lawsuit says.

So presently they let sex offenders travel freely, but Obama just signed legislation to revoke the passport of anyone who owes more than $50,000 in back taxes, and that hasn't been challenged yet.

    Absolutely brilliant.

Will the symbols indicate which offense has been committed, charged, tried, sentence completed and released from? Which other crimes are due the same treatment?

Exactly. An 18 year old male who had consensual sex with his 17 year old girlfriend, in some states, can be charged and convicted of statutory rape if the girlfriend's parents hate him and press charges. Then, sex offenders' list for life. You can't just lump them all together, no matter how convenient it might be to do so.

And these chaps are lumped together with serious threats without any differentiation. The list gets huge and the police stretched to deal with it. So when inevitably someone on the list does something horrid..... rember its those lovly DA's using the list to blackmail people into pleading guilty thats fucked the whole system up.
