Australian man out of Bali jail for smoking joint

AN Australian who was behind bars in Bali for a year after sharing a marijuana joint on the beach has been freed from prison.

Townsville’s Nicholas Langan, 25, was initially charged with drug possession, which carries a maximum 12 years’ jail, after the arrest at Canggu in January last year.

Kerobokan Jail official Wayan Sutresna said Langan was released 15 days early after receiving a remission on Christmas for good behaviour.

“Nicholas have shown good behaviour during in prison. He active in many prison activities,” Mr Sutresna said.

“He mostly active on futsal activity with other prisoners.”

Futsal is a form a soccer played with five players on each side.

Ngurah Rai Immigration official, Hermansyah, said Langan will be deported back to Australia after an administrative examination is completed.

“Based on the law, all foreign prisoner that released from jail must be deported to their country,” Hermansyah said.

“We also include him in the black list, so that he can not come back to Indonesia.”
Langan will be on the black list for at least six months. The ban could be extended by immigration.

He was in prison after being sentenced to one years’ jail for drug use, after giving a long apology at his trial.

He told the court he had a history of marijuana addiction that he was trying to beat.
Langan didn’t speak to reporters when he left Kerobokan jail on Tuesday.

His arrest came as relations with Indonesia were under strain from efforts to save Sydney men Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan from the firing squad.

A security guard had tipped off police when he spotted Langan smoking the joint with Hanung Pekik Hermantoro, 25, a driver for The Green Room Villas, who was also jailed.
Langan refused to comment to News Corp Australia.

What would the equivalent punishment be in Thailand?

A fine for the local and a few months for the farang - if he's unlucky.

I've known a few farangs pinched in Thailand for small bags. They spent the night in jail, got out on bond, and about a month later appeared before a judge and got a 10,000 baht fine. No deportation.

This is a fair quote but a much fairer quote is that any person on this earth getting involved in any drugs whatso ever in Bali deserve what they get.

The world knows Bali does not fuk around when they catch someone with drugs.

The place is corrupt as fuk, if retarded tourists want to enter the game then fuk em.

Stupid Australians being the worst offenders.

Of course he is an idiot for doing something illegal in a country known for its corruption - having said that, how utterly ridiculous to jail him or a year.

    Now, off-topic . . .

Indonesia should respect the human rights of Australians visiting Bali, Australians have their own culture and traditions.
One being tolerance, and that tolerance should be practised by the Balinese towards Australians and their minor indiscretions.

    You're really not normal, are you . . .

In another thread you go on about minding your own business, the tow's logo of choking an Indian, if not directly confronted by it - so, are you Australian and are you in Bali?

Yup, it's a thing. An odd ting, but a thing.

It's ridiculous. I've been to a "hi-so" party at a private villa in Sanur- weed was the least on offer. All quite open too (but behind villa walls). One rule for the rich, another for the poor, that's Indon. And here, obviously.

    as opposed to:
"sharing a marijuana joint on the beach". That's risky behaviour anywhere, specially in front of a security guard.
