London (AFP) - A fool, an idiot, a buffoon -- MPs lined up to attack Donald Trump for his comments on Muslims, during a parliamentary debate Monday on whether he should be banned from Britain.

The debate was triggered by a public petition which has attracted more than 575,000 signatures from people who want the Republican presidential hopeful kept out of the country over his comments.

Most of the dozens of lawmakers who spoke in the three-hour debate did not agree that Trump should be excluded. They instead argued that he should allowed to visit Britain so that his ideas could be debated openly and shot down.

The debate in a small parliamentary committee room was purely symbolic -- Britain's government has already said it will not ban Trump and lawmakers did not even vote on the issue.

But it did at least yield up some colourful language.

"Donald Trump is a fool. He's free to be a fool. He's not free to be a dangerous fool on our shores," argued Jack Dromey, a senior MP in the main opposition Labour Party, who wants him banned.

Gavin Newlands of the Scottish National Party called Trump an "idiot" whose popularity shows "how far the country of Lincoln and Roosevelt has fallen".

Alex Chalk of the governing Conservative Party argued that Trump's behaviour was "buffoonery" which should be met with "the classic British response of ridicule".

Meanwhile, another Conservative, Victoria Atkins, resorted to British slang to refer to him as "bonkers" (mad) and a "wazzock" (a stupid person).

Trump is leading the polls for the Republican nomination for the White House ahead of the US Presidential election in November.

He sparked fierce controversy last month when he called for a "complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on".

That call came in the wake of an attack in California by a radicalised Muslim couple that left 14 people dead.

Trump also labelled Mexican immigrants rapists and drug dealers.

- For Americans to decide? -

The petition sought to ban Trump from Britain under powers which the interior minister has to exclude any individual if it is "conducive to the public good".

Reasons for this can include encouraging "terrorist violence" or other serious crimes, or fostering hatred which could cause violence between different communities.

Americans previously banned from entering Britain include right-wing radio host Michael Savage and white supremacists Stephen Donald Black and Erich Gliebe.

Trump responded to the firestorm in Britain by saying the country was trying to disguise a "massive Muslim problem" and threatening to withhold $1 billion (950 million euros) of planned investments in two golf courses he owns in Scotland.

He has already been stripped of his status as a Scottish business ambassador and his honorary degree from Scotland's Robert Gordon University.

Prime Minister David Cameron has called the outspoken tycoon's remarks "divisive, stupid and wrong" but opposes a ban.

A debate in parliament must be held on the issues raised by any public petition on its website which attracts more than 100,000 signatures.

At Monday's debate, some MPs condemned the fact that it was being held at all.

Conservative Edward Leigh argued that giving the property baron publicity "would only play into Mr Trump's hands".

Another Conservative, Adam Holloway, added: "I feel we should almost apologise to the people of the United States -- it's for them to decide on Mr Trump's views, not us."

The republican party is so bereft of political talent that Trump is their front runner. The UK has such a paucity of entertainment on TV that he could become the star of Simon Cowell's next TV failure.

It's cold and miserable in UK and the nation deserves something to point and laugh at. Let the fool come and confirm his blinding stupidity.

UK MPs debate Donald Trump ban, label him 'wazzock'

Donald Trump is used to being the one doing the tough talk.

But on Monday the Republican presidential hopeful was on the receiving end of the harsh words -- with no opportunity of rebuttal -- as British MPs made their disdain for him clear during a parliamentary debate on whether to ban him from the country.

In doing so, the parliamentarians served up blunter criticisms than some of his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination have landed, labeling the 69-year-old "poisonous," "a buffoon" and even a "wazzock" -- British slang for "a stupid or annoying person."

"I don't think Donald Trump should be allowed within 1,000 miles of our shore," Jack Dromey, the Labour Party's shadow home affairs minister, told the assembled MPs.

The debate was triggered by a public petition launched in the wake of Trump's call to ban Muslims from the U.S., which called on the British parliament to ban Trump from the country for hate speech.

It received more than 576,000 signatures -- more than five times the number required for MPs to consider sending the matter for debate in parliament.

But the debate was non-binding, with no vote taken at the end, and was always going to be used by MPs as an opportunity to vent their thoughts on the divisive Republican under the protection of parliamentary privilege, which legally shields them from accusations of defamation or slander.

And vent they did.

'No valid points to make'

"The person you're dealing with may be a successful businessman. He's also a buffoon and has the dangerous capability of saying the most obscene or insensitive things to attract attention," said Gavin Robinson, an MP for the Democratic Unionist Party.

Victoria Atkins, an MP for the ruling Conservative Party, said Trump's "comments regarding Muslims are wrong."

"His policy to close borders if he is elected as president is bonkers. And if he met one or two of my constituents in one of the many excellent pubs in my constituency, then they may well tell him that he is a wazzock."

Her fellow Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat said he thought Trump was "crazy" and had "no valid points to make," while Labour MP Tulip Siddiq said his "poisonous" words risked "inflaming tension between vulnerable communities."

Debate 'fueling publicity machine'

About 50 of the UK's 650 members of parliament were present for the debate. But while all but one used the forum to criticize Trump -- especially his comments on Muslims -- most felt a ban was unwise, and only risked making a martyr of the politician, and boosting his electoral prospects.

"I've heard of a number of cases where people have been excluded for incitement, for hatred," said Conservative MP Paul Scully.

"I've never heard of one for stupidity, and I'm not sure that we should be starting now."

Labour MP Paul Flynn said that the "great danger" in attacking Trump was that "we can fix on him a halo of victimhood. We give him the role of martyrdom."

Atkins remarked: "We are fueling this man's publicity machine by having this debate at all today."

British Home Secretary Theresa May already has the power to ban certain visitors -- including those deemed nonconducive to the public good for reasons such as a record of hate speech -- but such a move would appear highly unlikely.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has already said he is not in favor of a ban.

Trump business: Debate 'absurd'

Trump's camp responded to the debate via a statement from one of his companies Monday.

Sarah Malone, executive vice president of Scotland-based Trump International Golf Links labeled the debate "ridiculous" and "absurd," saying the British Parliament was setting a "dangerous precedent" and "sending a terrible message to the world."

But at least one of the MPs participating in the debate felt that the brash New Yorker was unlikely to be overly concerned about the opinions of a gathering of British MPs.

"I'm not sure that he's going to be terribly worried about this debate," said Conservative MP Sir Edward Leigh.

They banned Michael Savage yet they still have radical jihadis preaching hate in London mosques. The UK is the country that has fallen...banning people over speech that does not incite or condone violence.

I am no trump supporter, but the only thing more ridiculous than him becoming our next prez is the elite and media in the US trying to push another Bush or Clinton on us...now that is pure insanity and the people aint havin it.
