BEIJING: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake, at a depth of only 5 km, hit the Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China’s Xinjiang at 5:18 a.m. Beijing Time on Thursday, said the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

Typo prompts false reports of major earthquake off Algeria

Several news organizations have sent out breaking news alerts after the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) erroneously reported a major earthquake off the northern coast of Algeria.

The reports emerged on early Thursday local time when Algeria's Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics (CRAA) sent out an earthquake notification for a small earthquake that struck 310 kilometers (192 miles) west of Algiers. The notification, however, was missing the magnitude, causing the depth of 7 kilometer to show up as the magnitude.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre picked up on the report shortly after and reported that a major earthquake had struck off the coast of northern Algeria. That report, which was also sent out through the center's apps and Twitter accounts, was then picked up by Bloomberg and the Chinese newspaper People's Daily.

CRAA later updated the earthquake notification, clarifying that the quake's magnitude was 3.0, after which EMSC deleted its report.

Baked Beans for brekkie turbulence forecast.

Interestingly Chiang Saen victim to several recent earthquakes that caused severe damage to temples has been selected to install a huge erection, however it is now suggested that it'll be the new river crossing when it inevitably tumbles placing the banner of the free fair and square in the lap of those militant marxists
