Asylum seeker raped virgin twice as she walked home from night out

AN asylum seeker who raped a young virgin twice as she walked to her boyfriend's house has been jailed for ten years.

Mebrehtom Abrha, from Eritrea, shoved his victim to the ground, ripped her dress and ignored her screams she was a virgin during the brutal attack last year.

The sick 25-year-old followed his victim for 10 minutes before attacking her, raping her twice and walking away "chillingly and casually".

It happened as the 21-year-old victim, who described herself as "slightly drunk", was walking back to her boyfriend's from a night out in Liverpool city centre.

She had been intending to hail a cab but couldn't find any, so began walking the mile and a half distance to his house, running part of the way as it was raining heavily.

She didn't realise she was being followed until she passed Crown Park and spotted her attacker creeping up from behind.

Prosecuting David McLachlan said: "All she remembered was ending up on the ground. She guessed she had been thrown over.

"She remembered being shocked and thinking ‘this can’t be happening’. She started screaming, she was shouting ‘please don’t’. She said ‘I’m a virgin, please don’t do this to me’.

"She described how he got up and walked away in a casual manner. He didn’t run away, he just walked off."

The victim suffered injuries to her back and neck during the horrific attack and was tested for sexually transmitted diseases, which thankfully came back negative.

The woman said: "I felt ashamed, dirty, disgusting and unclean. I felt horrible in myself and always felt exposed, even when I was covered up.

“I couldn’t go to church for months as I was angry at God. It made me question my faith and religion and what makes it worse is it happened right next to a church.

“I love Liverpool but after this I want to get away from Liverpool. I felt after this incident it was now tarnished for me and isn’t the city I first fell in love with.”

Abrha, who said nothing during the attack apart from the weird phrase "get a better number", fled the city after police released CCTV of him following the attack.

Officials traced his movements back to Modo bar in Concert Square, where he was thrown out before drinking alone in two other bars and finally following his victim.

He was arrested at his home in Aston, Birmingham after a BBC Crimewatch appeal.

In a written letter to court, he said: “This was a deeply sad and unchristian act. I did a bad thing to this woman. I do recognise I left a scar on her life and all her family.

“I am very sorry for the crime I committed. From the bottom of my heart I ask forgiveness.”

Judge David Aubrey QC doubted his remorse, adding: "She would never have imagined in her darkest of nightmares that such an event would occur and she would lose her virginity in the manner described to this court."

Abrha was handed an extended sentence of 15 years, 10 of which he will spend behind bars.

    Rapists receive only ten years.

...and then continue to ponder what the real problems are.

What makes you think he's a christian?
He should be sent back to eritrea.

I honestly believe that when refugees break the law of the country that gave them asylum they should be deported.
No Jail, just deported for life.
ANY criminal activity. Not parking violations and such but anything they are convicted in court for, sent back, no second chance.

How about, jail, serve term, then deported for life?

Why? Jail costs the state money and he gets free food, board and medical for the duration.
back on the street it eritrea will be worse for him.

More quality journalism; I never realized that virginity or the lack of it was of any relevance in the crime of rape.

    Strange comment.

Bad enough to be Raped though to have your virginity taken in away in such circumstances, depending on her Religion she could very well be seen as unclean now.

And where does it say he's a Christian?

He's quoted as saying something that could lead one to jump to that conclusion but pardon my cynicism.

Yes that is what made me think he's a Christian. Why would a Muslim make such a remark? Apply common sense for once.
Besides, the majority of refugees from Eritrea are Christians.

Again: what has a gang rape in Saudi got to do with any of this?

Either way, he's a rapist and an asylum seeker. Immediate deportation for him and all of his immediate family. But of course, it will not happen- scumsucking lawyers would lose out on too many fees that way. Way past time to change the Law. An asylum seeker is a Beggar, that has made it illegally to your country, and whom you have fed and clothed from the kindness of your collective hearts (and wallets). That is a privilege, not a Right.

He savagely raped a teen and will be behind bars for the next 10 years.

Do you suggest he should get a free pass to get out of the UK, preferably with an airticket provided courtesy of the taxpayer?

    Street in Eritrea?

    I don't trust the UK.

UK prison first (at taxpayers expense) and then deported.

The UK is a joke and so is the US.

These people are from a sh*thole. They should 1. improve their own country or 2. emigrate to a neighboring country.

Why is someone from Eritrea all the way up in the UK to get "aslylum?"

The only mention of Christianity was, he said " “This was a deeply sad and unchristian act...."
Yes it was an unchristian act. And regardless of his religion, pleading his innocence in what he at least perceives is a christian country, giving the impression he's a christian would not be a silly thing to do.
That's not to say he's NOT a christian, but nowhere in the article does it state he's a christian.
You just jumped to that conclusion.
    Admit it.

I would say such recompense as could be gained should be seized from him and his immediate family, and he and they should be turfed out forthwith. Naturally, he should be held in detention until shackled to the plane. No expensive court cases or protracted appeals.

There is method to my madness you know- family, honor, community. He has shamed his people and his cause (amongst others), and lost the benefit of our largesse', along with his family. A bit of vigilantism on the part of the refugee beggars beneftiting from our collective largesse' would not go astray either- because the actions of individuals such as this harms their whole cause, and this should be made obvious.

Nah, should bang him up for 10 years first, and invoice his homecountry for the expense.

10 years behind bars or life in eritrea where he fled from. Eritrea would be worse for him but the UN court of human rights wouldn't allow it. It would infringe his human rights.

But of course, he did not infringe hers- just showed her a bit of Sharia.
