Family's Christmas ruined as rental turns out to be a DRUGS DEN

WE'VE all endured holiday nightmares before - delayed flights, dodgy food and dirty hotels.

But for one family, a relaxing Christmas break turned into the ultimate holiday from hell - as the house they rented turned out to be a drugs den.

Dieter Winkler and his relatives, from Sydney, Australia, booked the accomodation on Airbnb for their 11-night stay on the Gold Coast.

But as the family prepared for a barbecue, they were horrified when 10 armed police broke down the doors and raided the house.

It was only then they discovered an "off limits" room, which they had been told was locked due to an electrical fault, was actually home to a sophisticated hydroponic cannabis growing operation.

Dieter admitted that he had "wondered" about the room after noticing light coming from the room during the day and night.

The family were then trapped for five hours as police searched their possessions and questioned them over the discovery - before being forced to vacate the property and fork out an extra £1246 for new accomodation.

To make matters worse, cops also revealed that the cannabis growing equipment was wired so poorly that it could have caught fire at any moment.

Dieter told News.co.au: "The cops piled in on a mission. They didn’t know we were innocent, so it wasn’t a friendly reception. My 72-year-old mother was at the home at the time and my little five-year-old niece rocked up mid-raid.

"We'd just been getting ready for a barbecue."

Airbnb, who listed the rental, reimbursed the family's payment of £863 and offered to also cover the costs of their new accomodation.

Airbnb spokesman told i100: "More than sixty million guests have stayed at an Airbnb property and while incidents like this are incredibly rare, we take them very seriously.

"There is absolutely no place for this sort of activity on Airbnb and this property has been banned.

"We've been in contact with the guest in this situation and will continue to do everything we can to offer our support."

It would put a bit of a damper on your BBQ though, and for all the rest of you Aussies I didn't mean the bush bread damper.

Pretty sure there'd be a certain aroma wafting around the apartment.

Wasn't exactly holiday home hell. If they had rented a crack suppliers house and had lots of crack visitors banging on the front door at all hours for a deal, that would be a holiday deal.

\That's the conclusion I jumped to when I read the term drugs 'den'. Rather an odd phrase if you ask me.

Why banned, there's no more drugs there now.
