Egypt tourist hotel comes under attack

At least two foreign tourists have been injured in an attack at a hotel in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada.
Egyptian state TV says local security forces repelled the attack and one assailant has been killed.
The attack took place at the Bella Vista hotel. Reports vary as to the nationalities of the victims, and whether they were shot or stabbed.
Egypt is battling Islamist militants based in the nearby Sinai peninsula, including an Islamic State affiliate.
A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said they were "urgently investigating" the reports from Hurghada.
He did not know whether any Britons might be affected.



An attack on a bus at a hotel near the Giza pyramids on Thursday was claimed by IS, which said it was targeting "a tourist bus carrying Jews".
Egyptian officials said no-one was hurt in the attack, near Cairo. Arab Israeli tourists were staying at the hotel, reports said.
Hurghada is on the Red Sea coast, across the water from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, from where the Russian passenger plane which crashed in the Sinai peninsula took off on 31 October.
After that crash, which killed 224 people and was claimed by so-called Islamic State, the UK and other European countries halted flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, citing security fears.
Russia also stopped all flights to Egypt.

I think some people here are just too old (too old to travel) and just reminisce about the old days. Remember how carefree travel used to be. Bad enough that we can't visit these places without warning. Just a few places listed here. Hope the U.K. gov. isn't fearmongering anyone. Or have we surrendered to Islam and didn't even notice ?

Tunisia borders Libya, where there is a continuing conflict and an absence of security, and where Islamist terrorist groups operate. The border is porous. Terrorist attacks have increased in Tunisia since 2013.
In October 2013, there were failed attacks at a hotel in Sousse and the Bourguiba Museum in Monastir.
On 18 March 2015, 21 tourists were killed, including a British national, in a terrorist attack at the Bardo Museum in the centre of Tunis.

The state of emergency imposed after the 24 November suicide bombing in Tunis has been extended for a further 2 months from 24 December to 21 February 2016.
Security forces remain on a high state of alert in Tunis and other locations. You should be vigilant, avoid crowded places and follow the advice of the Tunisian security authorities and your travel company, if you have one.
The Tunisian President and Prime Minister have said publicly that Libya is the source of security threats, and that further attacks are likely. The Tunisian authorities have acknowledged the limitations in their ability to counter the current terrorist threat.
Members of the Tunisian security forces have repeatedly been targeted in terrorist-related incidents, mainly in border areas including in the Chaambi Mountains.

ABM’s main area of operations is northern Sinai, but the group has claimed responsibility for attacks in other areas including Cairo, the western desert and Nile delta cities. In February 2014, ABM killed 3 South Korean tourists and their driver in an attack on a bus in Taba (Sinai). ABM have claimed responsibility for the death in August 2014 of a US oil worker in the western desert. The group has threatened further attacks against Egypt’s economic interests.
On 11 July 2015, there was an explosion at the Italian Consulate in Cairo.
On 1 July 2015, a series of attacks against military targets around Sheikh Zuwayed in North Sinai killed a number of Egyptian soldiers.
On 29 June 2015, Egyptian Public Prosecutor Hisham Barakat was killed and a number of others injured in an explosion in Heliopolis, Cairo.
On 10 June 2015, an attack on a security checkpoint at the Karnak Temple site in Luxor was repelled by Egyptian security personnel, resulting in the death of 2 attackers
In the early hours of 26 February 2015, there were a number of small explosions in Cairo. The explosions occurred outside mobile telephone shops in the Mohandiseen area, a restaurant in the Imbaba area and a police station in Warraq. There are reports of 1 death and a number of injuries.
In North Sinai, terrorists seek to prevent the Egyptian authorities from exercising control. There have been frequent, almost daily reports of attacks since the change in government. Most attacks are against the Egyptian government and military installations and personnel. On 27 January, ABM shot down a military helicopter with a surface to air missile, although the group has shown no intent to target civilian aircraft. Gas pipelines and border crossings have also been targets.
The Sharm el Sheikh resort areas of South Sinai benefit from heightened security protection. The last terrorist attack in South Sinai involving British nationals was in April 2006 when a series of bombs exploded in Dahab, killing 23 people and injuring 80, including 2 British nationals.
There is also a threat of maritime terrorism. In August 2013, there was an attack against a container ship in the Suez Canal and an attack on Egyptian navy vessels in November 2014 may also be linked to terrorism.
Be vigilant, monitor media reports and keep up to date with the travel advice covering your location. Take extra care over local holiday weekends, as some past terrorist attacks have occurred during these times. A list of local holidays can be found on the website of the British Embassy in Cairo.

Sharm only developed as a tourist destination for the lower end of mass market tourism from the UK when the £ fell against the Euro making more traditional Spanish/Portuguese haunts too expensive for them. Turkey became the default cheap alternative choice but when the Turkish lira re-valued it too became too expensive hence the hordes that chose Egypt for their cheap holidays.

That someone would actually consider retirement there is truly astounding. I suppose they are the same type of folk who would try to buy property in Bulgaria and Romania, countries where, after shaking hands, one should count one's fingers.

Brits truly are quite wondrous in their profound ignorance.
