Spencer Stone, hailed as a hero after a French train terror attack, has been stabbed in Sacramento, California.

He is currently in a stable condition and is being treated at a local hospital, an Air Force official confirmed to the BBC.

CBS News first reported that he was "stabbed repeatedly" on a Sacramento street corner on Thursday morning.

Mr Stone, 25, is one of three Americans that helped to thwart a terror attack on a French train in August.

They were hailed as heroes for tackling a man who was carrying a Kalashnikov rifle, an automatic pistol with ammunition clips and a box cutter knife.

The men, assisted by other passengers, threw him to the floor of the carriage, removed his guns and restrained him.

Mr Stone and the two others, Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, were hailed by French President Francois Hollande and greeted as heroes upon their return to the US.

They received awards from Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and met President Barack Obama at the White House.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —Sacramento police are searching for two men involved in the Thursday morning stabbing of France train hero Spencer Stone, who remains in serious condition at UC Davis Medical Center, officials said.

Deputy Chief Ken Bernard said the two men were described as wearing white T-shirts and blue jeans. They were seen driving away from the scene in a 2009 to 2012 dark-color Toyota Camry.

Stone, an Airman First Class with the U.S. Air Force, was out with a few friends when he was stabbed about 12:45 a.m. near 21st and K streets in Midtown Sacramento, Sacramento police said.

A fight in the street between the two groups led to Stone being stabbed multiple times in the torso, prompting investigators to block off two blocks in the area, Sacramento police said.

"This incident is a very unfortunate altercation between two groups of folks enjoying the night life in Midtown," Bernard said. "It is not related to terrorism in any way."

Police also tweeted that "alcohol is believe to be a factor."

Surveillance video released by A&P Liquor shows a group of men going after a single man, who is believe to be Spencer Stone.
