UK to charge students/long term visitors for NHS access

Surcharge of £200 per year and £150 per year for students enables access to National Health Service in the same way as a permanent UK resident.

From 6 April, all nationals from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) coming to the UK for longer than six months will be required to pay a ‘health surcharge’ as part of their visa application.

Is there an election coming up?? Yet again government attacking the easy target as they are powerless to prevent the hundreds of thousands of people entering the UK from within the EU and using the NHS for free.

    Good.
Stop giving away shit to those that sponge and the UK would be turned around overnight.

Sadly I feel that via a trojan horse scenario, the people in charge benefit from running the country into the ground.

    Revolution - only solution.
    Goes for the US too.

The EU has it's benefits, but allowing Romananian gypsies and Polish itinerant laborers to come and avail themselves of the NHS whilst not helping pay for it is not one of them. Why can't this entirely fair rule apply to other EU nationals too?

Reciprocal arrangements can be made with other first world EU economies with a functioning health service, by all means. But a Brit or German is hardly going to travel to Poland or Serbia to have his piles or gallstones removed.

While Romanian gypsies are unwelcome, most Romanians in the UK are law abiding hard working people as are the Poles, both of whom contribute more to the economy than they actually take out. The Tory press would not like you to know the truth since the only thing the conseratives ever do is control public spending.

Don't you believe it, I have heard of people going to Eastern Europe for cheaper dentristy, presumably for other issues too.

Until students who would have come here paid for their education and made a substantial contribution to the goverment's coffers decide not too and then we lose more as happened before when a conservative government made it too expensive for a number of foreign students to study here.

Sigh. Let's try again little man.

do you really think that cutting welfare will "'turn around the UK economy overnight?"

And he thinks only English people can grasp the concept. Basically, if you're not English you can't comment on anything pertaining to England, even if it is simple economics - which he gets wrong.

Rather odd, really, considering he's on a Thai-centric forum.

Compared to the cost of private health insurance the new fees are practically nothing.

They contribute more in taxes than they claim in benefits, don't think anyone has ever suggested otherwise, but that's not the issue, it's the extra pressure put on schools, hospitals, housing and other public services. Thank God the Tories try to control public spending as otherwise we'd have a Labour government doing what every Labour government does and let it get totally out of control. I suppose you still view tax credits brought in by Labour as a successful policy....

There is no pressure put on schools, hospitals and housing, that only happens because your right-ring moronic little friends refuse to invest in any of those which you mentioned, which has happened time and time again with conservative governments but reading the facts is something you never do! As for lettng it 'get out of control' you should learn to add up since the tories borrow more than the labour party but somehow it is only a crime when the Labour do it!

You talk about facts after a post like this, are you without children and live in a hamlet in some remote part of the UK? No mention of tax credits then. Do you even have a basic understanding of economics and the mess the Tories inherited in 2010, when you do some basic reading you might begin to understand why public borrowing has increased.

Tories pulling £billions from the funds caused all the pressure, closing down A&E centres.

if we're gonna blame Labour for letting shit get out of control then what about the rest of the western countries that are going under the hammer.
George Osborne even gave his blessing to easing regulations with the banks
otherwise they would have run away he said.
Of course he never likes to be reminded of it.

Blue, I'm surprised at you stick up for the fucking leeches.

The Poles even have their own website so they know what they can sponge off the state when they arrive:

Never mind the modicum of cost for the average individual - it's the quality of "health care" that needs to be addressed.
