Russia wants to build a road linking the Atlantic with the Pacific
RUSSIA has unveiled plans to build a super highway that would stretch from the UK to the USA, carving its way through the length of Russia to create the world’s longest road.
The Trans-Eurasian belt Development (TEPR) would stretch 20,000km linking the Pacific with the Atlantic and was presented at a meeting of the Russian Academy of Science by the head of the Russian Railways, Vladimir Yakunin.
Reported in The Siberian Times, the huge transportation route would span the entire length of Russia and include major roads, a new train network, pipelines for oil and gas and the laying of facilities for electricity and water supplies.
If the idea is successful, it is expected to create 10 to 15 new industries, new cities, new jobs and aid development of Siberia and the Far East.
Said to require trillions of dollars to construct, Vladimir Fortov, the Head of the Russian Academy of Science, said the project was “very ambitious and expensive”, but necessary to connect the cities and towns dotting the huge landmass.
