US Muslim Student Deaths Spark Worldwide Outrage

Police continued to investigate the slaying of three Muslims in North Carolina Thursday, an incident they think was an argument over a parking space but could possibly be a hate crime.

The victims' family and friends insist it was a hate crime and are urging police to fully investigate.

A neighbor, Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killings.

Chapel Hill police chief Chris Blue issued a statement saying investigators are exploring what could have motivated to Hicks to commit such a "senseless and tragic act."

"We understand the concerns about the possibility that this was hate motivated and we will exhaust every lead to determine if that is the case," Blue said.

A spokesman for the school, Rick White, tells VOA there is pain - and worry - on campus.

"As I talk to Muslim students and as I speak with leaders, as I have over the past few days from the Muslim community, I realize there is concern, there is fear about this, 'Could this attack happen again? Could this happen to me and my family?'" White said.

Thousands of people gathered for a candlelight memorial at the university on Wednesday night to honor the victims.

Very sad. I despair. Hicks appears to be a real loser while those kids he shot were bright and shining stars.

New York Times is carrying a very good article on this murder.

Chapel Hill Shooter Had Conflicts with Neighbors | Al Jazeera America

Imad Ahmad, who lived in the condo until December, said Hicks complained about once a month that he and Barakat were parking in a visitor's space as well as their assigned spot. "He would come over to the door, knock on the door and then have a gun on his hip saying, `You guys need to not park here,'" said Ahmad, a graduate student in chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Why We Worry about Islamist Violence and Not Progressive Atheist Violence.

When does the ideology of a killer matter?

Three Muslims have been murdered by a white atheist — ostensibly over a parking dispute. The shooter, if his Facebook page is to be believed, was what one might term an “anti-theist progressive.” Among the public figures he admired were Rachel Maddow, Bill Nye the engineer, and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Among the groups with which he identified were the Southern Poverty Law center, the Freedom from Religion Foundation, and the Huffington Post. Among those people he disliked were political conservatives, the devoutly religious, and fans of country music. This was not a man, let’s say, who is likely to have been friends with Ted Nugent."

There is no doubt that the press calculates its interest in killers’ backgrounds in a peculiarly inconsistent manner. Had the shooter been a Christian, a Republican, and a member of the NRA, we would today be hearing about the evident rise in “right-wing hatred.”

    Fair question is it not?

    Missed the point.

If this killer was an NRA member or say a Tea Party dude, the cries of outrage would be insurmountable.

All three young people were students at the University.
All three were born in America and grew up in the area.

If it was not a hate crime why were the three executed ?
Playing music too loud ? Parking in valuable visitor parking places ?

This story should be about a man who had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, had brandished the concealed weapon previously and obviously did not have the mental stability to be allowed to have possession of a lethal weapon.
    (Another victory for gun supporters.)

Too little , too late for three young people. RIP.

    Unhappy

    ^^ Second the e-motion.

Just a common murderer who's psycho snapped while feeling empowered with his weapon on his person.

Judge, jury and law = executioner within his mind.

Why can they not shoot themselves prior to taking innocent lives ?

Stupid looking fucker. Once again, American gun laws that allow cretins like this to openly carry handguns and use them to intimidate, and then execute, their neighbors are simply insane.

And those who support this 'right' are equally insane.

College town...young students enjoying life....an armed loser..just hating everyone...and SNAP!

I don't for a minute believe that these three young people would be dead if this inbred cretin hadn't had a handgun on his hip...to go along with the little voices in his head.

Ex-wife says he was always weird. Current wife, now that he can't get at her, just filed for divorce.

North Carolina is a death penalty state which is a good thing. Sadly, the average stay on death row sponging off the taxpayers is a decade or so.

What is the difference between a progressive republican and a progressive Democrat? Does it just mean they are both radical extremist?

Does the English language have such a limited vocabulary, that someone chooses to use inappropriate bastardisation of one word to mean the opposite of the original?

The arrested perp. had issues long before he started to think.

After reaching adulthood, the result was a mis-guided anti-theist evolved reaction, with issues.

He decided that his actions (shooting dead some car-park infringers) would resolve his problems re his issues.

He had a cognitive problem there, couldn't see the forest for the trees.

How the hell was this guy not profiled re. open carry?

This incident is just another example of US lax gun laws and essential profiling, combined with an anti-social personality, an ideological supremacist who was studying for a US lawyer's degree.

George Zimmerman is a close example of another supremacist on a mission, his neurosis was a little more "coon" related, but this nutter's trip was "car park" related.

The word has been adopted by the extreme right in America. In the right wing mind progress is a bad thing. If they had their way blacks would still be slaves and most Americans would be paying interest to the company store.

^ America is fucked up and going in the wrong direction make no doubt. However I doubt you would find a black man in chains being whipped by a white master on horseback. So to answer your question I would say yes.

One really wonders what goes on in their tiny little minds.

Oh well, those different looking people parked in a Visitor slot again.

Guess I'll go up, knock on the door, and murder all of them.

OK...job done. Guess I'll go turn myself in and either get executed or spend the rest of my life in a cage.

Shit....I'm going to miss the Jerry Springer show tonight.

    Wish I'd had another Bud.

    Oh well.........shit happens.
