Facebook Experiment Lands Man 72 Hours in Mental Health Facility

SAN MATEO (KRON) — A social media experiment by a San Mateo man led him to being detained for seventy two hours by authorities.

Shane Tusch, a citizen activist for privacy and free speech on social media, posted a personal and detailed warning about wanting to take his own life to his Facebook page.

“The post said that I made a decision to commit suicide over my stress of dealing with back of America from the Golden Gate Bridge to make a point,” said Tusch.

He claims he was not suicidal and that his post was only a social experiment to see how Facebook’s recently enhanced suicide prevention tools worked.

The San Mateo Police Department said a friend of Shane’s called them and was concerned for his safety. The department said it followed protocol and followed up with Tusch.

“It was less than a minute conversation, the hand cuffs went on,” said Tusch. “And you know, that was it — they transported me to the San Mateo County Mental Health Facility for a 72 hour hold.”

Tusch admits he is not much of a Facebooker and did not realize this would escalate as quickly and intensely as it did.

Tusch now wants others to be aware that what you put out there casually in cyber space could get you locked up for 72 hours.

The 72 hour detention is NOT legally considered an arrest, even if it looks the same, and is NOT any punishment for free speech.

San Mateo is in California and Section 5150 of the Welfare and Institutions code there allows the detention of anyone, who because of mental illness reasonably poses a threat to the safety of themselves or others. (my words describing the law). It's purpose is to save lives, (both of the person detained and others) and it has been exactly the same for at least 35 years that I know of.

Suicide threats are taken seriously, as well they should be. He only showed his own stupidity by posting one on Facebook and is showing it now if he is trying to portray himself as a victim of the "thought police."

He'll be back in no time, posting selfies at the original facility, yes.

“The post said that I made a decision to commit suicide over my stress of dealing with back of America from the Golden Gate Bridge to make a point,” said Tusch.
I tried watching the video to get clarification on the man's statement, but the video wouldn't play on my web browsers for some reason.

"Dealing with the back of America"? I would guess he was referring to the Bank of America and there was a typographical error in the article and that B of A does not have a branch at the Golden Gate Bridge.

A more accurate way of saying it might have been, "The post said that I made a decision to commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge because of my stress caused by dealings with the Bank of America".

Or maybe he does consider the Golden Gate Bridge to be the backside of America?

^ You can be brilliant sometimes KW and sometimes you can be a real jerk. His efforts go beyond the article, and are covered in other articles; he's trying to imply to those who do not know better that he was locked up (arrested) as punishment for saying something on Facebook, and that's a deliberate misrepresentation.

Sounds like he's going to try the lawsuit lottery too:

MAN FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST FACEBOOK'S SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM
SAN MATEO, Calif. -- A San Mateo man is lodging a complaint against Facebook's new suicide prevention program because he claims it landed him in police custody......
"You basically can be in prison by what you put on your Facebook page if you say the wrong thing and someone flags you for being suicidal,"

    http://abc7news.com/technology/man-f...rogram/554705/

His quote above is a lie, he did not go to prison (as punishment), he went to a psychiatric hospital (to be assessed), there is a difference. You may apologize at any time for being a grumpy old man.

If you want to let somebody know that you are contemplating suicide, do not mention it on Facebook.

    Facebook back in the news:

Facebook accused of tracking all users even if they delete accounts, ask never to be followed.

A new report claims that Facebook secretly installs tracking cookies on users’ computers, allowing them to follow users around the internet even after they've left the website, deleted their account and requested to be no longer followed.

Academic researchers said that the report showed that the company was breaking European law with its tracking policies. The law requires that users are told if their computers are receiving cookies except for specific circumstances.

Facebook’s tracking — which it does so that it can tailor advertising — involves putting cookies or small pieces of software on users’ computers, so that they can then be followed around the internet. Such technology is used by almost every website, but European law requires that users are told if they are being given cookies or being tracked. Companies don’t have to tell users if the cookies are required to connect to a service or if they are needed to give the user information that they have specifically requested.
