Russia is reportedly getting military bases in an EU state

Russia is reportedly getting military bases in an EU state

Cyprus has offered Russia to have air and navy bases on its territory.

Cypriot president Nicos Anastasiades announced that the country is ready to host Russian aviation and naval bases. The official agreement on military cooperation between the two nations is expected be signed on February 25, 2015, according to Lenta.ru.

"There is an old [defense] agreement, which should be renewed as is. At the same time, some additional services will be provided in the same way as we do with other countries, such as, for example, with France and Germany," Nicos Anastasiades said. "Cyprus and Russia have traditionally had good relations, and this is not subject to change."

Cyprus' announcement comes after Russia expressed interest in having a military base in Cyprus in late January, according to the Global Post and Greek Reporter.

Notably, Cyprus is one of the 28-member states in the EU, which have been imposing sanctions on Russia over the past year in response to the actions in Ukraine.

And just like Greece has recently caused a stir by complicating the process of extending sanctions on Russia, Cyprus, too, just voiced some opposition to the additional sanctions on Russia, adding that many EU members share that opinion.

"We want to avoid further deterioration of relations between Russia and the European Union," the Cypriot president reportedly said.

So military cooperation between Cyprus and Russia is yet another red flag for the EU.

Presumably, the Russian Air Force will use the airbase "Andreas Papandreou," along with the international airport of Paphos in the southwest of the island, approximately 50 kilometers from the air base of the British Royal Air Force "Akrotiri." Additionally, the Russian navy will be able to permanently use the base of Limassol, according to Lenta.Ru.

"The Limassol port borders on the British air base of Akrotiri which serves NATO operations and is also an important hub in the electronic military surveillance system of the alliance," according to the Global Post.

Given Russia and Cyprus' shady economic relationship over the last two decades (ever since the fall of the USSR), perhaps this isn't all that surprising.

Oh hang on, despite the BBC saying there is no deal....

    http://www.newsweek.com/russian-army...rstrips-305633

The president of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, has said he is in talks with the Russian government to let its military use the island nation’s sea and airports. He made the announcement in an interview with Russia’s state owned news agency Itar-Tass today, having previously denied earlier reports that Cyprus had agreed a deal to lease its facilities with the Russian armed forces.

According to Tass, the island nation has agreed to to increase the two countries’ cooperation in the “area of defence” and Anastasiades is preparing to visit Moscow later this month to sign off around 10 joint undertakings between the two countries.

"Discussions about additional capabilities which can be delivered by Russia in the case of a humanitarian operation or an emergency situation are underway,” Anastasiades said, while his defence minister Ioannis Kasoulidis highlighted that there were no plans to have Russian troops stationed in Cyprus, also home to a strategically important British RAF base.

Doubts have been expressed about how genuine the Russian military’s ‘humanitarian’ motives in Cyprus are. Last September at a NATO summit Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov’s insisted that Russia’s presence in Ukraine was of a humanitarian nature.

Cyprus and Russia have close economic ties. According to Global Financial Integrity, Cyprus is both the largest source and destination of foreign direct investment, while report by the Moscow Times last month estimated that Russian-related business made up around 10% of the Cypriot economy.

“Cypriot-Russian relations have been progressing a while,” Elizabeth Quintana, a military air power and technology expert for the British defence and security think tank Royal United Service Institute (RUSI) says.
Humanitarian bases for Russian military with the rent they should pay being struck off the debt they owe to Russia.

Expect to the the Bankers come barreling in soon to renegotiate Cyprus's debt so that they keep control of Cyprus.

Here we go again. Snubb jumping on a legitimate news story, hurling abuse, and yet when you look at his "rebuttal" says more or less the same thing as the original article.

Russia and Cyprus have a deal in place that is being renewed and expanded. Russia can place military resources there for "humanitarian" purposes.

The only "bogus" part of this thread is your accusation that the original argument is bogus simply because you, yet again, you clutch to the mainstream media narrative (yes, Al Jazeera, that is well known to broadcast content approved by the CIA .... debunk that one at your peril snubb... not least the fake Bin Laden videos of a man who was already dead for half a decade).

So - cutting through your "you're a nitwit" and "you're a liar" routine, how about addressing the guts of the thread. Cyprus will have increased Russian military there at its bases. Yes or no.

This is what the LEAD article in the thread said..

Exactly the same as you are saying, except that you have decided to ignore the parts in all of your articles where the Cypriots are expanding the agreement.

Same ole same ole from snubbins - False statements, insults, and reliance on whitehouse and pentagon rhetoric.

Was the headline of this thread "Russia is reportedly getting military bases in an EU state" or was it not?

That headline is false so your post is bunk. You read that article and jizzed your pants with excitement but once again it was just premature ejaculation on your part. Typical of you.

You do the standard pseudo backpedaling response were you trot out your same old tinfoil conspiracy garbage and try to smear whomever it maybe that has discredited you.

You are a laughing stock on this forum most do not even bother to comment on your stupid threads aside from Jeff.

OK - so you only read headlines? Is that it? That was the headline from the article, and you will note REPORTEDLY is the third word.

Where did IT or I say they were doing an America and putting 20,000 soldiers, a fleet of attack ships, and 2 squadrons of bomber there? It didn't.

How am I back peddling? The story is CORRECT.

All your assertions of "laughing stock" etc puts you in the company of 2 other people on this forum. Humbert and Harry. Well nice company that says a lot about you.

Are you saying that I should change the headline of the actual news article that then goes on to truthfully report what is going on, that has not been disputed at all?

This is in the body of the article. It is FALSE. Furthermore you blathered on about how Russia having these new Air, Land and Sea bases in Cyprus was the reason that Merkall and Hollande ran off to Moscow in this thread (Greek PM concedes election defeat).

Once again you blew your load to early.

A one line SUB HEADING is not a body of the article.

Also, I bet it is in merkall and hollandes mind as well. Can you prove otherwise?

Such a sellout you are. Believe everything you read in CIA approved media. You STILL have not proved a single assertion in the article false keeping in mind that 1 ruskie in an office at the airport would constitute a base.

By the end of the month when the agreement is signed we will see. You are saying that nothing is happening, that only when on humanitarian missions the occasional russian military plane of ship can go there, and I am saying it is being expanded, which is exactly what the Cypriots are saying. Keep in mind MErkin (who knows nothing about anything outside of the US aside from the trash you read in mainstream US press) that Russia is being decent about the Cypriot debt where as the EU and IMF are being complete cunts and knicking depositors money to give to the bankers, the businesses that you seem to support which is strange for a "anarchist".

Blow your load 5555 you have been googling that for 3 days every 10 minutes waiting for some Corporate Shill press to make up a load of lies about it.

    Sell out.

Speechless. I was expecting something very different from you Harry. Try harder.

You are right of course; Cyprus is rather friendly to Russians of course. They benefited so much from the Russian oligarchs laundering their money there for so long, and then, when the banking cartel started to loot the savings accounts, gave them a few days to get all of their money out.

As long as the West is regarded as piss-weak, Putin will continue to expand. What are Germany & the US (under Obama) going to do about it?

Just welcome more illegals into their countries and keep their heads buried in the sand ala Neville Chamberlin.

Booners - The west is not regarded as piss weak at all. They hold all the cards and you will get your war that you crave for. Ask yourself this - who is the hostile force? Russia, who after a democratically elected government is ousted by YOUR government (proven fact - they did the same as the Chavez coup in Venezeuala that lasted a couple of days before the people got him back again) accept a democratic referendum by the ethnic russians living in Crimea to invite them back into Russia, who then also refused to accept the same from East Ukraine, told them to negotiate, and has NEVER been found with actual evidence to be involved militarily there.

OR. The us who as far back as 2006 were speaking with the now installed NAZI puppet in Ukraine, who has US "Advisors" on the ground with all the weapons they could ever want and desire, all in a bid to protect Joe Bidens sons and John Kerry's best friend's gas field and to stir up more war with Russia.

When I was called out, by you talking bollocks and then relying on an article that actually AGREES with the OP article, I just reaffirmed that. Then you start with the bullshit tripe you usually spout and I am ashamed to say that I responded in kind. For that I apologise.

However, like always, you are refuting the OP but with nothing actually backing up your points. Shit, you did not even read the whole article! Just shows how weird you are.

As for being a laughing stock, I am happy that people such as yourself, harry and humbert laugh at me because if my view of the world were the same as yours I would be crying. It is sad though that EVERY thread I contribute facts or an opinion to, you try to destroy immediately so that no one else feels happy to contribute. I can take your foolishness, killing discussion, ridiculing people into silence, but alas others won't and just send me lots of greens instead.

Pseudo the reality of it is that you pontificate. You try to speak down to posters like you have some special knowledge and understanding. Which is of course utter bollocks.

If someone disagrees with even one of your viewpoints then they are immediately blasted by you as being controlled by the corporate shill press and on and on. Because to you there can only be one reality and it is yours. Pretty sad really.

    Oh one more thing....

I am speaking for myself here and not boontard.

Russia is an aggressor as is the United States. They BOTH relentlessly push their own global agenda's. The EU also has its own agenda as well.

Each one of these entities has their own spin on things. Sadly this is what you either refuse or just can not see.
