NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams caught out in huge lie

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams has been forced to admit that his compelling 2003 account of surviving a ride-along in a military helicopter downed by ground fire in Iraq was not true.

In fact, he told viewers in an apology at the end of last night’s national bulletin, his helicopter had not been shot down. But somebody else’s had.
“I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago,” Williams told the studio camera.
“I want to apologise. I said I was travelling in an aircraft that was hit by fire. Instead, I was in the following aircraft,”

The 55-year-old is one of America’s most recognised journalists. He has covered the some of the world’s biggest stories, reporting on Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans, taking an African road trip with U2 frontman Bono and embedding with US troops in Afghanistan. He has interviewed everyone from Chelsea Clinton to Edward Snowden.
But his most compelling story — and the one he told the most often — was about getting shot down in a military helicopter in Iraq.

On Friday, during an NBC special report broadcast from a Rangers game, Williams paid tribute to Command Sgt. Major Tim Terpack, who had protected him in Iraq.
“The story actually started with a terrible moment a dozen years back during the invasion of Iraq when the helicopter we were travelling in was forced down after being hit by (a rocket-propelled grenade),” Williams said, launching into his signature story.
“Our travelling NBC News team was rescued, surrounded and kept alive by an armour mechanised platoon from the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry.”
It was the last time he would tell it.

After the broadcast, military newspaper Stars & Stripes tracked down the crew from the downed helicopter, only to discover their recollection of events was not the same as that of Williams.
The newspaper confronted the newsman, who quickly admitted to the “mistake” and apologised.
“I would not have chosen to make this mistake,” he told Stars & Stripes.
“I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another. We never came under direct enemy fire to the aircraft.”

The crew told the newspaper Williams had arrived on a different helicopter — about an hour after a Chinook with the 159th Aviation Regiment was shot down by enemy fire.
Williams had been nowhere near the targeted aircraft, they said.
Williams has been lampooned mercilessly social media networks since his admission. He has also posted a long and detailed apology to NBC’s Facebook page, claiming he’d “conflated”
two different incidents and deeply regretted the error.

What an ass. Did he not think any of the many other honorable people involved might mention that he was a lying sack of shit?

So can anyone really believe the veracity of any of his other stories?
Hes a liar and should leave the profession.

He won't and it'll eventually go away. The media of today stinks.

Back in 2003 almost all of the media were spanking their war boners so hard it was an easy mistake to make; clearly he mis-rememberized and meant so say he was ducking sniper fire with Hillary in Bosnia.

    Frontline was an Australian version

The characters and situations were often thinly-disguised parodies of recent real events and real people, giving the show's comedy a black edge.

Didn't Hillary Clinton tell a similar story a few years back, and was shown to be lying?

    My thoughts also.

Glad that his lies have caught up with him. Respected journalist? Not any more. He cannot even be honest about admitting his lie.

Should be the end of his career. The Stolen Valour guys will be all over him.

During the Sydney Olympics a newsreader who in his youth had been part of the broader pre olympic swimming squad but who didn't get in the actual team let a comment from another anchor about his olympic experience go unrebutted.
It soon spiralled out of control with them constantly cutting to him for his insights and referring to him as their Olympic Specialist.

At first he was uncomfortable, but soon it had gone on so long that he had to play along. Someone eventually checked the records and it came out. Next week he was running a roadside sausage sizzle stand.

Yep. He didn't lie; he "conflated".

    "Conflate" - good Scrabble word.

Conflation occurs when the identities of two or more individuals, concepts, or places, sharing some characteristics of one another, seem to be a single identity — the differences appear to become lost.[1] In logic, it is the practice of treating two distinct concepts as if they were one, which produces errors or misunderstandings as a fusion of distinct subjects tends to obscure analysis of relationships which are emphasized by contrasts.[2] However, if the distinctions between the two concepts appear to be superficial, intentional conflation may be desirable for the sake of conciseness and recall.

He didn't conflate two issues. He simply lied about the events. The fact that two helicopters were involved does not constitute 'conflation'. As a credible journalist he is finished. Maybe he has a career on late night TV following Jimmy Fallon.
