As reported yesterday, on Oct. 28, the German Air Force Eurofighter jets on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) to provide NATO Baltic Air Policing were scrambled to intercept 2x MiG-31 Foxhound, 2x Su-34 Fullback, 1x Su-27 Flanker and 2x Su-24 Fencer jets over the Baltic Sea.

The following day, Oct. 29, three large packages of Russian planes skirting NATO “airspace” were detected and monitored by aircraft on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) in both northern Europe and Turkey.

“These sizable Russian flights represent an unusual level of air activity over European airspace,” said NATO in an official statement.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. CET NATO radars detected and tracked eight Russian aircraft flying in formation over the North Sea, in international airspace.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force scrambled its F-16s in QRA that intercepted and identified the Russian aircraft as four Tu-95 Bear H strategic bombers and four Il-78 tanker aircraft.

In what can be seen as a “show of force”, two of the Russian strategic bombers flew parallel to the Norwegian coast, heading to the south-west and were intercepted by Eurofighter Typhoon jets scrambled by the Royal Air Force (whereas the remaining 6 Russian Air Force planes returned towards Russia).

West of Portugal the two Bears were intercepted by F-16s from the Portuguese Air Force.

According to NATO, “The bomber and tanker aircraft from Russia did not file flight plans or maintain radio contact with civilian air traffic control authorities and they were not using on-board transponders. This poses a potential risk to civil aviation as civilian air traffic control cannot detect these aircraft or ensure there is no interference with civilian air traffic.”

Later on the same day, whilst the Tu-95 returned towards Russia, NATO radars detected and tracked four Russian aircraft flying over the Black Sea in international air space: 2 Tu-95 Bear-H bombers and 2 Su-27 Flanker fighter jets.

Turkish Air Force F-16s were scrambled and intercepted the Russian aircraft in international airspace.

During the afternoon of Oct. 29 October, NATO radars detected and tracked 7 Russian planes over the Baltics (needless to say, in international airspace): 2x MiG-31 Foxhound, 2x Su-34 Fullback, 1x Su-27 Flanker and 2x Su-24 Fencer jets (these were probably the very same aircraft intercepted on Oct. 28).

Portuguese F-16 Fighters assigned to the Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled from Šiauliai, Lithuania. It’s unclear whether they reached the package or not; anyway, the Russian Air Force planes returned to Russia’s airspace.

    Seems they have an agenda.

    That video is fake.

The video is not fake. Some idiots on youtube called Warleaks are trying to claim it is fake because of the shadowing. It did not occur to them that the plane is designed to blend in with the sky which makes it hard to decipher the shadowing.

This is normal protocol. The Russians only normally send one jet. NATO sends more in these cases.

Is snubb saying the SU 34 does not exist and is fake, or just that a certain video is fake?

Are you that dense? That is were they got the image of the plane right down to the pilot looking over. The Portuguese never released this video and that is the only place it could have came from. Its fake.

Golly you are fiesty. I was just asking a question. They look like different colours though. Besides, which was filmed first, the plane or the simulation?

^ The game came out in 2008. I really am not trying to prove anything one way or another just pointing out that the video is in question.

    In the meantime!

Kiev Announces Russian Invasion of Ukraine a Hoax?

Throughout this conflict every once in a while Ukrainian government officials have come clean about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

To the chagrin of the Obama Administration and NATO Russia has not invaded. This latest admission came twice today. Once by inference and the other a direct admission from Ukrainian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Victor Muzhenko.

During a briefing with General Muzenko he announced that “To date, we have only the involvement of some members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and Russian citizens that are part of illegal armed groups involved in the fighting. We are not fighting with the regular Russian Army. We have enough forces and means in order to inflict a final defeat even with illegal armed formation present. “- he said.

If that wasn’t embarrassing enough for the Poroshenko regime which has consistently stated Russia had invaded and that Ukraine is fighting the Russian Army, it was Petro Poroshenko’s own TV station Channel 5 news that broke the story!

It is the Russians longest ranging bomber. Its role since back in the cold war was to sniff the boarder radars of NATO and its allies. No one thinks that this aircraft is a threat. It is just pushing and prodding tech boundaries..

I love these Bear bombers. How come there was no Airfix kit for these bruisers?

I am getting the radio controlled one so I can write 'Я люблю тебя' in red smoke in the sky over my GF's house next month on Valentine's day.

The Bear has un unrefueled range of about 12 500 km. With the later models range was improved to about 15 000 km.

The B2 Spirit has a range of 12,000 km without the need to refuel.

The best bomber in the Russian fleet has a range of 14 500 km.

So if range is everything, as Bsnub is implying then the Bear is your machine.

The US probably forbid Airfix from making Russian military hardware. I remember having war machine trading cards in the 80's. My favorite was the Blackbird. But there was no TU 160 cards around.

‘Invisible’ Russian bombers intercepted over Irish coast

    Brian O'Reilly – 30 January 2015 08:14 AM

RUSSIAN fighter planes capable of carrying nuclear weapons flew past the west coast of Ireland yesterday - forcing Britain to scramble Typhoon fighter jets in response.

The Russian Tu-95 'Bear' bomber planes travelled from the north, past the west coast of Ireland and to the English Channel before turning and going back the same way.

Britain scrambled its fighter jets in response - as Ireland is considered to be within its 'area of interest' for defence.

The British jets were deployed when long-range radar detected the Russian planes approach.

An aviation source told the Daily Telegraph that the planes were flying without their transponders on - meaning they were invisible to any commercial aircraft flying into Ireland at the time.

It is understood that the British military did not inform the Irish civil aviation authority of the incident.

British Typhoon fighter jets escorted the Russian planes from a distance of about 1,000ft for around half an hour, until they left were a safe distance away.

At no point did the planes enter British airspace.

    An RAF spokesperson said:

“Thanks to our integration with air defence systems across NATO, we were able to begin mission planning early and therefore were ready to act in good time.

"Once ordered to by the NATO Combined Air Operations Centre in Germany, Typhoon Quick Reaction Alert fighters were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth to intercept and identify the aircraft. Integration with our colleagues in the Royal Navy provided additional surveillance coverage and added value to the mission.

“Yesterday’s mission lasted for over 12 hours; the operations room was both calm and focussed. We constantly train for these scenarios so that we are well rehearsed and ready to maintain the integrity of our airspace.”

Britain has summoned its Russian ambassador to explain the incident.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "Russian aircraft manoeuvres yesterday are part of an increasing pattern of out of area operations by Russian aircraft. While the Russian planes did not enter sovereign UK airspace and were escorted by RAF Typhoons throughout the time they were in the UK area of interest, the Russian planes caused disruption to civil aviation

"That is why we summoned the Russian Ambassador today to account for the incident.”

Military experts told the paper the manoeuvre could have been political posturing - or an attempt to gauge British military response times.

You can even see the weathered paint on the vertical stabs and how it matches the aircraft in question:
