‘Crabzilla’ spotted off the coast of Britain

THIS seaside town might be famed for its oysters, but this incredible image could soon have visitors flocking to Whistable in the hope of catching Britain’s biggest crab.
The photograph, which has been shared online, appears to show a crustacean that is at least 15-metres wide lurking in shallow water.

While some insist it is proof of ‘Crabzilla’, others argue that the shadowy figure is nothing more than an unusually-shaped sandbank — or is simply a playful hoax.
The image shows the outline of a crab in the mouth of the Kent harbour — dwarfing the fishing boats resting on the nearby pier.

It is shaped like an edible crab, a species that is commonly found in British water and grows to an average of five inches.

The photograph was posted on a website called Weird Whitstable — an online collection of strange and unusual sightings in the town.

Its curator, Quinton Winter, said that at first he thought the image — sent to him by a follower — showed an unusual sand formation, but that he is now convinced it is a monster of the deep.

He said: ‘At first all I could see was some faint movement, then as it rose from the water I thought, “that’s a funny looking bit of driftwood”.

‘It had glazed blank eyes on stalks, swivelling wildly and it clearly was a massive crab with crushing claws.

‘Before this incident I thought the aerial photo showed an odd-shaped sand bank. Now I know better.’

The largest known species of crab is the Japanese spider crab, which can measure more than 3.5-metres.

    Photoshopped.

The crab's shadow doesn't align with the shadow of the wharf,...ie, the shadow of its left claw lies directly below it, as does that of its right claw, as if the sun were directly behind and above it, while the shadow from the wharf lies slightly to the left, as the sun is shining from the right in the picture.

Giant Crab Caught and Kept Alive on Phuket

    They're already invading Thailand...

PHUKET: Locals in the famous island of Phuket have discovered a giant mud crab weighing nearly three kilograms.

Kasit Padungkan, a 29 year-old local in Phuket, held the crab in front of the media's camera before sending it to the provincial office of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources where it would be kept for display and for researchers to study.

Investigations confirm that it was a male crab weighing 2.8 kilograms and measured at least 2 feet from its left to right claw. The crab's scientific name is Scylla serrata and is commonly known among the locals as ''Poo Thonglang.''

According to Mr. Kasit, he had bought the crab from an associate of his at a price of 700 baht. However, he decided to offer the crab to the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources instead since it was a rather rare catch.

The last time a crab like this had been appeared in Phuket was back during 30-40 years ago. The crab population has reduced significantly due to the destruction of mangrove forests and the spread of shrimp farming within the area.

Realising this problem, the locals along with the subdistrict administration organisation (SAO) and other government agencies have worked together to replant several mangroves and now the crab population is starting to recover considerably.
