Jewish group asks France to rename 'Death to Jews' hamlet

Lobbyists tried unsuccessfully to get La Mort aux Juifs renamed twenty years ago

A prominent Jewish group, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, has asked the French government to rename a small village in central France that is currently called 'Death to Jews' ('La Mort aux Juifs').

The centre's director wrote to France's interior minister to request the removal of "this genocidal name".

In his letter, Shimon Samuels suggested the hamlet's name dated as far back as the 11th Century.

But local officials in the hamlet have dismissed any concerns over the name.

The hamlet comes under the jurisdiction of the village of Courtemaux, located some 100km (60 miles) south of Paris.

    'Under the radar'

The director of the US-based Jewish organisation expressed shock at discovering "the existence of a village in France officially named 'La Mort aux Juifs", in a letter to Interior Minister Bernard Cazenave.

"It is extremely shocking that this name has slipped under the radar in the 70 years that have passed since France was liberated from Nazism and the (pro-Nazi) Vichy regime," Mr Samuels wrote

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre is a global Jewish human rights organisation

Requesting the name change, Mr Samuels said "the current surge in public and violent expressions of anti-Semitism makes us uneasy regarding the motives of those seeking to reside at such an address".

He said the name could have been in existence since the Crusader pogroms that led to the expulsion of France's Jews in 1306.

But the deputy mayor of Courtemaux, Marie-Elizabeth Secretand, appeared to downplay any concerns over the name, telling Agence France-Presse news agency: "It's ridiculous. This name has always existed."

"No one has anything against the Jews, of course. It doesn't surprise me that this is coming up again," she added.

It is not the first time the hamlet has come under the spotlight. An anti-racism group lobbied the government to get the name changed in 1992 but was unsuccessful, AFP reports.

France has one of Europe's largest Jewish communities, totalling about 500,000.

But it has seen a rise in the number of anti-Semitic incidents, spurred on by the recent flare up of the Israel-Gaza conflict

This is typical of whingers whatever the cause. Whales, environment, global warming, whatever.

They whinge or complain but never put any effort or resources into providing or suggesting a practical or usable solution.

Simon Wiesenthal Centre should get together with some other French people and come up with an alternative name before they complain. Then go to the village and see if the villagers want to change the name. I suspect I, and they, know the answer. Best bet would be to buy out the whole village., it's not as if their kin don't have enough money. Then change the name.

This is just a publicity stunt in light of latest Israeli "situation" that and that there are no more ex Nazi guys to hunt down. Or maybe they complain routinely and this just happens to have been spit out on someone's planner.

They should change the name really. They would not allow it if it was called La Mort aux Nègre.

Here are the most racist place names in America:

#1.) Jewtown: That’s a town in Georgia that was originally settled by freed slaves. There’s also Hebe Canyon, Utah.

#2.) Wop: There’s a town in Wyoming called Wop Draw.

#3.) Negro: There are 797 places in the U.S. with the word Negro in them, including Negro Creek, Nevada. And a lot of them used to have “nigger” in their name, until it became one of two words the government banned from place names. The other is “Jap.”

#4.) Sambo, Spade, and Darkey: Sambo Creek, Pennsylvania is one of 14 Sambos. Spade, Nebraska is one of 30. And Darkey Springs Road in Tennessee is one of seven.

#5.) Chinamen: Chinaman Creek, California is one of 30 places that use the term. There are also STILL two places with Chink in the name, including Chink Creek, Maryland.)

#6.) Cripple: Our ancestors weren’t just racist, they were also insensitive when it came to the disabled. That’s why there are ten places with Cripple in the name, including Cripple Creek, Colorado.

#7.) Polack: There are six of them, including Polack Lake, Michigan.

#8.) Gypsy: There are 58, including Gypsy, West Virginia.

#9.) Injun: It’s still used in the names of eight places, including the Injun Creek Trail in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

#10.) Squaw: More than 1,100 places have the word in their name, including the Squaw Valley ski-resort. To you palefaces, it may seem like an innocent name for a Native American woman. But it was also slang for Indian prostitutes and female genitalia.

Don't think they are particularly racist really.

Twat. It has been, according to one of his collaborators, there for at least 1000 years. Long before the whingers came along.

It is all part of the crack down on people expressing distaste in israels actions in gaza. Always happens when their is a popular backlash against them, the lobbyists go into overdrive labeling everyone and everything in the world antisemite to scare people off.

I wonder how many Jews have been killed in the village in the last 100 years?

This issue has been around a lot longer than 20 years. The little pimple of a settlement is apparently part of the village of Courtemaux (in the Loiret region if you want to look on a map ) It's just off the A19. It could easily be called Courtmaux Sud. The reason the French activists went to the Wiesenthal center is because the French activists they tried multiple times to have it changed previously. The first big push was indeed in 1992, when a coalition of "liberals" led by le Mouvement contre le racisme et pour l'amitié entre les peuples, tried to clean the name up. Such a group was considered too "lefty" for the Petainistes who recall the good old days of glory as part of the 3rd Reich, long before the nation of collaborators had suddenly become "resistance" fighters. The regional council is the old guard right wing, Old Mr. Le Pen would have fit right in.

BTW, for you history buffs the Jargeau detention center was in close proximity (about 75km) from t the location. It was used to hold the gypsies before they were shipped off to the concentration camps. It was also used as a processing center for part of the 5000 Spanish non jew refugees who were opposed to Franco prior to their extermination at Mauthaussen concentration camp. I'm surprised the lefties don't know about this, as it's part of France's national shame.

This part of France was liberated by the US Army XII corps, with the loss of US lives, although De Gaulle and his lackies attempted to give the impression that the French Resistance had done so.

Funny? If one looks it is a hamlet. But more really a farm on both sides of the road, which is very narrow. I could not find a name sign.

Best for all if it were simply left along and forgotten.

    Typical Jew whiners.

There is a place in Spain with the same (or similar) name and got it's name after it became a stopping point on a Jewish migration trail during one of the Spanish pograms. This one probably has similar connections.
    It's history.
If the Jews wan't it changed, tell them sure, right after you put a shopping mall where auschwitz is and bulldoze any of the other camps.

It's simply is just part of the zionist lobby fight back against world opinion shifting away from the historic "See no evil" approach to Palestine.

Israel needs antisemitism. It is the glue that holds their nation together, the us vs. them factor. All pull together lads!

If everyone started to like Israel, approved of its policies, if they lived in harmony with their neighbors the population would start to look inward instead of outward and risk having different groups within with different ideas.

the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, has asked the French government to rename a small village in central France that is currently called 'Death to Jews'
seems like a reasonable request, TBH.

of course not....just because the town is named "death to jews"......why would anyone assume that someone has anything against jews?

The Israel propaganda machine is in full swing, looking for victim stories around the world, to confirm their victim status.
On My Facebook account I have 3 Jewish friends, and they pass on these Zionist views and share them.
    Nobody comments or presses like.
They don't even realise that they are on ignore.
But nobody will tell them that, because that would be called homophobic, racist, capitalist, communist, it is worse than that, that bad word, nobody wants to called that.
