He had been open in the past about his struggles with alcohol and drugs.

He had recently returned to a rehabilitation centre to "fine-tune" his sobriety, the Los Angeles Times reported in July.

"At this time, the Sheriff's Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made," police said in a statement.

US actor Robin Williams found dead

US actor Robin Williams has been found dead, aged 63, in an apparent suicide, California police say.

Marin County Police said he was pronounced dead at his home shortly after officials responded to an emergency call around noon local time.

Williams was famous for films such as Good Morning Vietnam and Dead Poets Society and won an Oscar for his role in Good Will Hunting.

In a statement, Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, said she was "utterly heartbroken".

"On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

Williams had three children from previous marriages.

The actor was first known for his zany portrayal of an alien in the 1970s TV show Mork and Mindy.

He was a regular stand-up comedian while continuing to act in such films as Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Mrs Doubtfire and as the voice of the genie in Aladdin.

While many of his roles were in comedies, Williams won the Oscar in 1998 for best supporting actor in Good Will Hunting.

Fellow comedian Steve Martin tweeted he "could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul."

    Terrible news.

This is a man who had everything, talent, adoration, wit, money, a beautiful home in Tiburon, a lovely wife, kids. Have to wonder what was so bad he had to kill himself.

    Goodbye, Robin.

    damn.....

he was a funny and a great actor! He went to Juilliard as an actor!

guess he could not shake the demons!

I loved the movie Kingfisher.... probably a little closer to himself than we would think... a man deeply troubled in his mind... uses fantasy to cover his pain... and dies in a very sad way....

RIP Robin.... you will be missed!!!

This is a great message board.... For me to poop on!

As evidenced by his role as 'Mrs. Doubtfire'.

He was classically trained in theatre at the Julliard Academy which is the most prestigious performing arts school in the US. I doubt he was just winging it.

RIP Robin Williams. IMHO he was always best when not hemmed in by the scripts and storylines of movies.

Him on Scotsmen and the invention of golf:

I can honestly say I have never watched one of his movies.

But I loved his stand-up comedy.

Brilliant wit and timing and one of the few American comedians who never had to generally use fvck and cvnt every second word to get a laugh.

    RIP Robin.

I thought his Oscar for Good Will Hunting was thoroughly deserved, that was a great role he played with tremendous depth and his talent really shone through.

Might have to dig that out for a watch tonight.

R I P to Mr Williams , never saw the guy as I don't watch films , however by the sound of it he was a very popular person .

This always scares the crap out of me , I have a dear brother who suffers horrendous depression , and yes he to has tried to get to the early exit door a couple of times before.
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

The Fisher King was my favorite. Great range and full of pathos. As a metaphor for the human condition it was beautifully judged by Williams whose character redeems Jeff Bridges.

    Gilliam"s best movie.

Check out a recent RW movie

    'The angriest man in Brooklyn'

There's a scene in it where he gets so angry, you think that he must be drawing on depths that are far removed from his usual happy-go-lucky style.
