Puts a new dimension on his suicide.
Something quite dignified about bowing out when diagnosed with a terminal illness, especially after having led a full life. Better IMHO that battling on in ripe old age against something unstoppable, consuming a lot of medical resources and calling on herculean effort from other people.
Yeah, but not so early. It can take quite some time to progress.
I suppose it was a few things coming at him at the same time. He was talking about his money troubles a lot, apparently.
One the evening of his suicide, robin williams was on the family guy cartoon as himself. Ironically his cartoon self tried to commit suicide on the show. Three minutes after it was shown the bbc reports that he had taken his own life.
Ok...the question is : was he ad-libbing, or going from a script ???
If it's the former, that is really very poignant.
It seems that it was a coincidence : the show had been aired a couple of times before and that particular episode was shown on BBC in Britain only.
All things being equal, How's Robin Williams death compare to the slaughter of Kurds by Isis this week? Seems a bit hypocritical to go so over the top for a actor who committed suicide, when entire families are being assassinated in Iraq?
I was in the Bay Area when he passed. The whole place was and is still in mourning. Flags at half mast, tributes at Giants games.
Sadly he was kicking his addictions through biking, he had gotten heavy into it. It has been revealed by his wife that he had early stage Parkinsons disease and this was compromising his ability to ride. The demons got the better of him. We graduated high school the same year in Marin country Ca. RIP Robin.
Not this time. You personally may have not found his humour funny, but many people described the experience as like losing a close family member. As I do too.
Robin Williams had a common but difficult to diagnose condition known as Lewy Body Dementia and this may have contributed to his decision to commit suicide last August, according to documents included in his autopsy report.
The coroner in San Rafael, California, released its autopsy report as well as a pathology report from the University of California San Francisco documenting the comedian's condition.
All people with LBD have dementia, and sometimes appear confused and disoriented and exhibit unusual behavior, said Angela Taylor, the director of programming for the Lewy Body Dementia Association. According to the coroner’s report, Williams had been acting strangely before his death. He is said to have kept several watches in a sock and was very concerned about keeping the watches safe.
People with LBD tend to experience extremely graphic hallucinations that are visual but can also include smells and sounds, Taylor said. Many with the diagnosis have Lilliputian hallucinations populated by small people or creatures. They usually don’t find these frightening, just very real, she said.
While difficult to distinguish from Parkinson’s disease – which Williams also had -- LBD isn’t rare, Taylor said. It’s one of the most common forms of dementia and affects more than 1.4 million people in the U.S. according to the association’s latest statistics.
Despite how common LBD seems to be, doctors have difficulty making the correct diagnosis, Taylor said. In the early stages, cognitive function fluctuates and people who have it may be able to pull themselves together for periods of time, Taylor explained.
“If you didn’t know them you may not realize anything is wrong,” she said.
The diagnosis is often confirmed after death when looking through a microscope reveals Lewy Bodies, tiny protein deposits on the nerve cells of the brain. The autopsy of Williams’ brain showed Lewy Bodies as well as other brain changes that are the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, according to the report.
Lewy body dementia is "very complex, and it requires treating a much broader range of symptoms to maximize quality of life," Angela Taylor, director of programs at the Lewy Body Dementia Association, told CBS News. "The report indicates that [Williams] was being treated for Parkinson's and that is one of the features of dementia with Lewy bodies. Hallucinations are a core feature of Lewy body dementia."
