I thought his Mrs Doubtfire character was brilliant, and of course Sally Field is also wonderful.

Really liked Williams when I was younger,

but found him...irritating and pretentious in my maturer years

I'll put that down to my increasing grumpyness

I hear that he was a lovely guy

Mork & Mindy pulled me through a pretty depressive patch....

"The World According to Garp" had some great moments. I'll always remember the line: "No glove no love" as it was g/f's favourite saying for ages afterwards.

    Bipolarism?

There are a number of very talented entertainers/writers/artists out there caught between two worlds, not entirely of their own making, either, I might add.

As he said, "The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone."

The link between comedy and depression
    Obituary: Robin Williams
US actor and comedian Robin Williams took his own life at his California home, police have confirmed.

Marin County Sheriff's Lt Keith Boyd said Williams, 63, had been treated for depression and killed himself by hanging.

The entertainer was last seen alive by his wife on Sunday evening, and was found dead at about noon on Monday, Lt Boyd said.

Tributes have poured forth from President Barack Obama and others.

Lt Boyd said Williams's wife saw him before she went to bed the evening before and left the house at 10:30 the next morning, believing him still to be asleep in another room.

Just before noon California time (19:00 GMT), the actor's personal assistant became concerned when he did not respond to knocks on the door, he said. The assistant entered the room and found Williams dead and cool to the touch.

After a post-mortem examination on Tuesday morning, investigators determined the preliminary cause of death to be asphyxia by hanging, but officials were waiting on the results of toxicology testing before making a final ruling.

In the past Williams had talked, and even joked, about his struggles with alcohol and drugs. His representative said on Monday he had also been "battling severe depression".

He had recently returned to a rehabilitation centre to "fine-tune" his sobriety, the Los Angeles Times reported in July.

In a statement, Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, said she was "utterly heartbroken" and asked for privacy for the family.

"As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

Mr Obama said Williams "made us laugh. He made us cry."

"He seemed to be a kind of receptor of all knowledge, whatever it was, whether it was in the news, or something from an encyclopaedia or a book, he seemed to know all this stuff.

This is really just so much subjective, sentimentalism and means diddlysquat.

" The worst thing in life......"is such meaningless drivel. If you feel that way then it's down to you and how you interact. Blaming others for one's feelings of isolation is silly. In truth, we are all isolated by definition, most of course through their innate stupidity but for many it is an inability to communicate effectively. And that generally resolves to folk not knowing what it is they want. And that,in essence, resolves to the reality that life is futile, purposeless and without any higher reason beyond plain survival and furthering the species.

Everything else is just indulgence and killing time although talent and genius can raise such activities into art.

Bipolarism, like ADHD, is used as an excuse for instability and immaturity. I much preferred it when it was called manic depression. It is a terrible affliction and most sufferers cannot function at all without serious daily medication and not to be confused with a social excuse which is so fashionable these days..

I wish I could remember the exact quote but. It goes something like "True loneliness is not having anyone with whom you can share your innermost feeling or opinions..." or something like this.

True happiness comes from within. Some people are naturally happy other are not.

It's all about the balance of chemicals (seretonin) in your body.
I'm in one mind to feel distressed at the anguish he must have been suffering to drive him to such an extreme act, another to feel pissed that he should be such a coward and so selfish as to inflict such pain on his family who he must know loved him regardless.
We really don't know what was the situation with his family though, so that may have had something to do with it.
Depression isn't helped by introspection, depression is helped by removing the focus from yourself.

One man's delusion is another's happiness.

Anyhow, it seems he was experiencing severe financial problems which he evidently found difficult to reconcile. A reported $75 million fortune depleted by two rapacious divorces and injudicious property accumulation prompted him into taking work he considered, probably rightly, unworthy of his talents.

Some folk simply run out of stamina and can't face the hassle of it all. Others can. Lennie Cohen was ripped off totally after a lifetime of work by a manager he trusted. At the age of 70 plus he got back into harness and started touring again and is now a bigger phenomena than ever, particularly in Europe.

The guy ran out of steam.

Looks like Robin Williams was not alone, if this piece from NBC is accurate.....

Williams, whose bright life was emblematic of the Baby Boomers, is leading them still in death. The suicide rate among Americans 45 to 64 has jumped more than 30 percent in the last decade, according to the CDC, and it’s possible to slice the data more finely than that. Among white, upper-middle-aged men, the rate has jumped by more than 50 percent, according to the public data. If these men were to create a breakaway territory, it would have the highest suicide rate in the world.

“We absolutely have to start focusing attention on the middle aged,” said Julie Phillips, a sociologist at Rutgers and among the first researchers to notice the rise in Boomer suicides. In a paper she presented last year, she argued that Boomers are “the tip of the iceberg.” They have the highest suicide rate right now, she found. But everyone born after 1945 had a higher suicide rate than expected—and everyone is on pace for a higher rate than the Boomers.

She calls it, “the new epidemiology of suicide.”

Part of me thinks this is largely due to the deterioration of US society in general. This group passed through a lengthy period of economic prosperity, with almost unlimited potential...only to be faced with decline, disenchantment, and debt. For some people all this would be enough to make them check out well before their time. I wonder what the stats are like in other countries that are turning themselves inside out over debt and general decline.

Cohen really is a phenomenon. Sorry to hear about Williams though, Mork & Mindy was a fave as a youngster.
Seems to be quite a few of the Hollywood set also got scammed by people like Bernie Madoff. List here of his "clients":

The number of Jewish folk who got took suggests their alleged acumen in such matters is not as acute as many believed.

Quite chastening the breadth of the scam that also hooked several English county councils and the new Man Utd. Manager.

Everyone believed what they wanted to believe:despite the rates available in the orthodox world they would get a better return from Madoff. Greed has its own reward.

ROBIN WILLIAMS - Famous Bipolar Comedian

Williams had heart problems for which he was hospitalized in March 2009. He underwent a successful surgery to replace his aortic valve.

Robin Williams - Famous Bipolar People
Robin Williams has long suspected to be a sufferer of either depression or bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness where the person fluctuates between episodes of extreme energy, focus and productivity (mania) and severe depression. Apparently, he was in one of the episodes of depression when he took his own life.

Ent if that is meant to be a definitive forensic statement then it fails, hopelessly.

It is a fluff piece reduced to simpleton terms for the vacuous.

In reality, the sufferer is at their most vulnerable when they experience manic episodes in which they indulge in the wildest of fantasies proposing absurdly unrealistic schemes rooted in delusions. When this inevitably swings back towards what passes for normality folk consider to to be a depressed state in comparison. But for many that is when they are at their most stable and much more amenable to drug therapy enabling them to live a more normal life and function within society.

Of course, there are those whose mania exists within a more focused state and it is questionable whether or not they could be diagnosed as manic depressives in any clinical sense. Hence this new(ish) approach in terming the symptoms as evidence of a bipolar condition. Society loves labels but one must be careful not to fall in the trap of using them as excuses for something else entirely which merely deflects a better therapy. The ADHD syndrome is a classic case of flummery and ignorance institutionalising caprice, ill discipline and poor parenting.

As they say, genius is rooted in madness to a certain degree and may well be attributable to chemical imbalances within the brain. All a question of degree, I suppose, but having witnessed the disease in its fullest form in many patients I have to say that manic depressives in the main live nightmare lives and during acute phases are quite unmanageable.

In gauging Wiliams' depression it occurs to me the man had many real problems with which to contend and his decision to kill himself was perhaps quite rational to him although for most contemplating such an event, by it's very nature, one's balance of mind would have to be severely disturbed. That in itself is not evidence of a clinical condition and assuming it must be is simply poor science. Perhaps he had just reached the end of his tether and wanted to escape what he considered to be an untenable future.

If money worries contributed to his suicide, it would be ironic if his saddened fans are commemorating his exit by downloading his movies from Pirate Bay, (and failing to make any correlation).

    WoW and DOUBLE WOW!

I cannot even BELIEVE IT that I needed to come to the Teak Door to hear this news!

Dang right. I did not know until just this minute, because here in Thailand I try to keep a loow profile and I stay away from any interesting news, and just concentrate on the stuff I pickup while walking around half juiced on happiness, all the time.

So, as soon as I saw this, I thought someone here was joking, as usual. But, NO.
    It is TRUE.

Old Robin is Dead, but NOT in Sherwood Forest this time.

It says here as I am reading it on Forbes that it was an APPARANT suicide.
    What does THAT mean?

Is he only apparently dead, or something?
I should know, because I used to give EEGs that sometimes they only think one is dead but there is still a few wiggles in your Beta waves caused by muscle artifacts, or something.

So anyway, this guy used to really crack me up.
But, I stopped watching many years ago, because he just did not seem funny anymore, and it was a mess, really.

    Remember on Carson's last show?

People thought he was great but I thought he sucked.

I am very sorry that he is gone, however, for reasons of his family.
Also, suicide should NOT BE STIGMATIZED if that is what someone enjoys doing, then they should have every RIGHT!

You know, I always thought he laughed a bit too hard, and tried a bit too hard.
But, I am not saying he had a dark cloud inside him.
He had a dark clown inside him, maybe.

So. very sorry this guy is gone, and I think he was a good actor, and I think he will be missed.

But, at least now he won't be around to remind me how old I am too.

    RIP John Wayne.
