Aus - Abandoned newborn with Down Syndrome and born to Thai surrogate in hospital

    http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/par...1227009760126\

THE abandoned baby that an Australian couple left in Thailand after they found out he had Down Syndrome, has been rushed to hospital, as Australians donate to save him.
Six-month old Gammy is in hospital with a lung infection, and his 21-year-old Thai surrogate mother, Pattharamon Janbua, fears he will die unless he undergoes surgery for a congenital heart condition, Fairfax Media reports.
The unnamed couple used a surrogate after they were unable to conceive naturally. Ms Pattharamon became pregnant with twins and when tests at the four-month mark showed the baby boy, named Gammy, had Down syndrome the couple reportedly told her to have an abortion.
    Ms Pattharamon, a Buddhist, refused.
When the twins were born in Bangkok the couple took Gammy’s sister — who was born healthy — home but refused to take the boy, Fairfax media reports.
The couple reportedly paid $11,700 for Ms Pattharamon to be a surrogate and the surrogacy agency promised her another $1637 when it was discovered she was carrying twins.
Ms Pattharamon never met the couple. She is now desperately trying to raise money to care for Gammy, who has a congenital heart condition and is critically ill.
“I would like to tell Thai women — don’t get into this business as a surrogate. Don’t just think only for money ... if something goes wrong no one will help us and the baby will be abandoned from society, then we have to take responsibility for that,” she told Fairfax.

Phaaark me. Gotta name and shame. This couple must be tracked down, shouldn't be impossible. How many Aussie couples returning to Australia from Thailand with plus one baby can there be!

What did the surrogacy contract say w.r.t. abortion at 4 months if the baby showed to be abnormal?

Was aborting the abnormal foetus and saving the girl feasible? If so then they have been placed in a very difficult position by the surrogate mother if she broke the contract and gave birth to a downes baby against their wishes. They will now be publicly dragged over the coals for leaving him in Thailand and may have to adopt him into their family.

Rebecca Brown was also outraged, writing: “The behaviour of these Australian parents is appalling--to leave one of their children to die because he is not “perfect”?? SHAME on them.

Have Shally and Rebecca both got downes children so they know what it is like to bring one up?

" and may have to adopt him into their family."

Adopt? FFS, he's their damn child, at least the father's child. No adoption necessary.

So they should be. Perhaps even charged under some sort of child abandonment or child abuse laws.

    Do you?

having children is not like shopping fir fruit at the supermarket. You can't take them or get a refund if the fruit is a bit bruised.

I hope the Australian couple live a long life and suffer through each and every second of it .

What do they intend to tell the twin in their posession ? and yes I use the word possession purposely because that is what they act like they have .

They've just proved that they are not fit parents to keep the other child either.

no. A guardian may apply for citizenship on the child's behalf but there is no legal requirement to provide it. mother is deemed to be Thai.

If the contract stated that abortion was the couple's call if the baby was downes and aborting one foetus was a medical option then the surrogate mother is the person who broke the contract and chose to keep the male foetus alive. She is also its biological mother. Doesn't seem such a callous decision to say she can keep it.

    Why?
bye and large modern society accepts abortion for no other reason than a baby being inconvenient or unwanted. Why do you think they do tests for genetic disorders and abnormalities in the first place?

In vitro fertilisation was successful and the couple were told to expect twins, but after hearing that one of the babies would have Down's syndrome, they asked for them to be aborted.

    I don't know.

I expect most surrogacy contracts give the parents the right to abort if there is any abnormality.

    They chose to abort.

    They could always try again.

The mother has ignored their request which has put them in a very difficult situation. They have then agreed to take the healthy child which they were not obliged to do given the broken contract.

Situation would have been avoided and they could have tried again and they would have not been dragged through the press if the surrogate mother had upheld her end of the contract.

    Yes, you can.
As initro pregnancies often implant more than one egg it is becoming increasingly commen, even with healthy fetus.

If the parents took the kid back to Australia (I'm presuming they were born in Thailand) then obviously a passport had to be applied for, easy for the Aussie authorities to track the couple down (and shoot them).
