The 83-year-old Australian entertainer appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London to face nine counts of indecent assault and four counts of making indecent images of a child.

Mr Harris, who lives near Bray in Berkshire, arrived at court accompanied by wife Alwen.

Wearing a black suit, striped shirt and patterned tie he walked slowly to the dock.
When asked to confirm his name, date of birth and address, he asked the court clerk to repeat the question before answering in a faltering voice.

His defence counsel, Sonia Woodley QC, indicated that Mr Harris would be pleading not guilty to the charges.

Christine Athanasius, prosecuting said given the sentencing guidelines for the alleged offences, the powers of the magistrates courts were insufficient and applied to have the case passed to the Crown Court.

Miss Athanasius said: "The prosecution say given the number of offences, the nature of the offences and the repeated nature of the offences the sentencing powers of this court are insufficient."

The short hearing was briefly interrupted at one point by a power cut.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnott said she was sending the case the Southwark Crown Court where Mr Harris is next due to appear on October 7.

He was released on conditional bail, the conditions being that he does not contact a number of named witnesses and that he has no contact with anyone under the age of 18 unless supervised by a person over the age of 21.

The indecent assaults allegedly took place between 1980 and 1986 and relate to two complainants who were aged 14 and 15 at the time.
The four allegations of making indecent images of children relate to dates between March and July last year.

Mr Harris was first interviewed under caution on 29 November 29, 2012 by officers from Operation Yewtree, the investigation set up after claims of sex abuse were made against Jimmy Savile, the late television presenter.
He was arrested on March 28 this year and was eventually charged last month.

Operation Yewtree has three strands, one relating to Savile’s crimes, one relating to allegations against Savile and others and the third, termed others, concerns allegations unconnected to Savile.
When he was charged Scotland Yard said the allegations concerning Mr Harris formed part of the third category.

I am reminded of the TV presenter whose name I cannot recall and who was arrested in the UK for having naked images OF HER OWN CHILD.

The tv presenter took negatives of her children to, I think, a Bonus Print shop for developing. They included bathroom scenes of the usual type but I don't remember her husband being in the bath. The shop assistant reported her to the police. She was arrested but acquitted.

The impression I have is of police possibly grabbing at straws. Four counts of making indecent images of one child doesn't sound like a typical pornography-obsessed paedopile. There is more in common with the TV presenter than with Gary Glitter.

Jimmy Savile on thinking back to my youth (very difficult now i am 50) was a real sleezebag. But as innocent kids we watched his show and wanted to be on it oh so badly and were jealous of those that were.

Thank god my parents never sent me to meet Jimmy.
