Belgium's Jewish community under police guard after three killed in attack

Jewish community on maximim security alert after gunman attacks national Jewish museum in Brussels

Belgian synagogues are under armed police guard as a national manhunt continues for the gunman who shot three people dead and critically wounded a fourth in an attack on the Jewish Museum in Brussels on Saturday.
The four victims were hit in the face and neck when a lone gunman attacked the museum with a fusillade of a dozen shots at 3.50pm local time yesterday before fleeing on foot through a jazz festival in the surrounding Sablon area.
Two Israeli tourists, a couple in their 50s from Tel Aviv, and a museum volunteer named only as Dominique, were killed in an attack that has raised fears of a resurgence in violent anti-Semitism.
Another museum volunteer, Alexandre Strens is critically ill in a Brussels hospital after he was shot in the head during the attack when multiple shots were fired. Witnesses described the attacker as young and carrying a backpack.
"We are searching for a person who reportedly fled on foot. This person has not yet been identified. We are trying to maximise security camera images and we will give more information about the perpetrator or perpetrators," said Ine Van Wymersch, a spokesman for the Brussels public prosecutor

"Concerning the motive, we have very little information, but anything is possible. We know the location, Brussels Jewish museum, calls to mind an anti-Semitic attack, but we don't have enough elements to confirm this thesis."
A man driving an Audi double-parked outside the museum, that was initially thought to be the getaway car, was arrested shortly after the shooting but was later released as "witness not a suspect".
The manhunt is complicated by national and European elections taking place in Belgium on Sunday as the authorities have declared a maximum security alert with a permanent police presence for all places related to Jewish interests in Belgium.
Didier Reynders, the Belgian foreign minister was with his family at the nearby jazz festival on the fashionable Grand Sablon square, and attended the scene of the attack shortly after it took place.
"I was here on the Grand Sablon, a woman fled with a child from the scene and told me that there had been shots. I went down there right away, I saw what happened at the Jewish Museum," he said.
"I saw two victims on the ground. The events occurred inside the museum. Apparently a person entered and exited quickly after the shooting."
Elio Di Rupo, Belgium's Prime Minister, expressed "deep shock" at an attack that targeted a "deeply symbolic place namely the Jewish Museum of Belgium".
"We strongly condemn these extremely serious acts of violence," he said. "Our heartfelt thoughts are with the victims, their families and their loved ones."
The attack has been condemned by Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, who blamed it on "slander and lies against the State of Israel".
"This act of murder is the result of constant incitement against Jews and their state," he said.
Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's foreign minister singled out a Palestinian-led campaign to boycott products from Israeli settlements as contemporary form of anti-Semitism and a possible factor in the attack.
"Activity termed 'pro-Palestinian' that once again, just like in those dark days, calls for the boycott of 'Jewish goods' and aggressively targets the only democracy in the Middle East, is nothing but anti-Semitic," he said.

Read your Bible, God punished those ancient tribes that that fought and oppressed the Jewish people. ( over 2000 years ago)
They are Gods chosen people, every Christian knows this, in order to get to Heaven, the Jewish controlling God of heaven, stipulates that
you have to believe, ( Faith) the scriptures and everlasting life after death is your reward.
    Disobey this almighty god,
well god help you then, this Jewish God will punish you when you die,
    to hell fire.

    everlasting torment in Hell

Police investigators wearing Niqabs. I've never seen a more blatant example of anti-semitism.

LOL, the classic misuse of the term "chosen". It is a shame that those who quote the scriptures have obviously never studied them. The term chosen does not entail exclusive rewards for Jews, nor superiority. Rather it is in respect to the obligation the Israelites accepted. In return for the blessing of the Lord, they promised to obey and to lead "holy" lives. The jews who do not will be punished by the Lord. Non jews who follow the limited laws of Noah and those who lead a proper life are considered to rank higher than the jews who do not respect the covenant.
So much for the chosen people.

If you had attended a good Christian school as I did, you would have learnt these things and understood that by the grace of Providence, practicing Christians are chosen people as well. Know what that means? There's hope for you yet. Just lead a proper life and obey the Noah laws and you too will be considered "chosen".

In the interim, I'll have a coffee while you try and wrap your head around that.

The blind and extreme ideals of a cultural superiority can be just as disconcerting as a religious equivalent - they could easily be construed as one and the same.

I think I prefer Mark Twain's take on Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus etc. He said "Religion was born when the first con man met the first fool".

I did not, of course, include Buddhism, which is actually a philosophy rather than blind belief in supernatural beings.
