U.S. drone kills 21 in Yemen

U.S. drone kills 21 in Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, April 19 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. drone raid on early Saturday killed 16 al-Qaida militants and five civilians in Yemen' s southeastern province of al-Bayda, a Yemeni army officer said. The drone hit a pickup car which was carrying 16 suspected militants in Hazmiah area of al-Bayda, about 268 km southeast of the capital Sanaa, local sources said. Five civilians passing by in a nearby car were also killed.

Another six civilians travelling in another car on the highway of Hazmiah area were also wounded, witnesses said.

It's the seventh of such drone strikes in the past two months.

Earlier April a drone strike killed three suspected al-Qaida militants in the southern province of Abyan. In March five separated drone strikes in al-Jawf, Marib and Shabwa killed at least six militants.

The United States has escalated its drone strikes against suspected al-Qaida targets in Yemen since February last year, when Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took office after a UN- backed deal removed former President Ali Abdullah Saleh from power.

Last month the White House pledged to continue to support the anti-terrorism efforts of Hadi's government that aims to uproot the al-Qaida group in Yemen.

But critics said the drone strikes often violate international law and cause heavy civilian casualties.

In December last year a U.S. drone strike mistakenly hit a wedding party in Yemen's southeastern province of al-Bayda, killing 11 Yemeni civilians and wounding another 21.

You americans should hang your heads in shame over allowing your government to do this kind of 2 face murder diplomacy in your name for the sake of cheaper gas or a better exchange rate.

    Revolt now.

No chance of 'water boarding' them now to see if they were actual militants. Right on Albert.

All America does is breed terrorism! I wonder how many innocents that have lost family in these countries would happily strap a bomb to themselves to kill Westerners who support their government over this type of action?

The best way to kill Al Qaida militants would be to supply arms to the Syrian government.

    You may well be right.
In Iraq, al-Qaeda is a threat that needs to be defeated, whereas in Syria the very same organization is apparently not a threat, but the Syrian government is.
What’s even richer is that Kerry was issuing his warnings about al-Qaeda in the region surrounded by senior members of the House of Saud, who are known to all the world as the bankers, recruiters and weapons suppliers of this network.
Only a few months ago, media reports disclosed American diplomatic cables - going back to 2009 - in which the former US ambassador to Iraq explicitly stated that Saudi Arabia was financing and arming al-Qaeda extremists in Iraq.

    Never did....

It's alright and perfectly legit when the USA commits such acts, as they're the good guys.

Since 16 - hopefully this report is true and accurate - 16 were Al-Qaida members then this attack is justified, IMO.

But how do they know 16 were Al-Qaida members? Where's the proof?

    that was in my post.

    Hopefully the 16 is accurate.

    Otherwise, it's bad, obviously.

I doubt there were 16. The higher the figure the more acceptable the story is to be believed.

    16 al-Qaida militants
    quickly becomes
    16 suspected militants
In signature strikes, 'suspected militant' can mean nothing more than being a military-age man who happens to be in the wrong area (the wrong area being essentially all of the Muslim world).

Still, even in the massively unlikely case that they were card-carrying members of Al-Qaida, killing one civilian for every three trrrsts is both morally wrong and spectacularly fucking stupid - so business as usual then.

    "carrying 16 suspected militants" + 5 innocents killed + 5 wounded.

No trial, no evidence, no jury.
USA should be ashamed of itself.

This is just murder. I bet the wedding party massacre never even made the news in the US.

What I fail to see is how they come up with the body count when obviously there isn't much to count after a missile strike

True, there is room for error and it can lead to a slippery slope.

As for fighting against al-Qaeda and islamists, they have to be dealt with by lethal means.
