GRAPHIC IMAGES: MOD shoot pigs so medics can practise emergency surgery

MOD shoot pigs so medics can practise emergency surgery

    Tue, February 18, 2014

SHOCKING pictures have emerged of the British Army shooting live pigs so they can practise emergency battle field surgery.

We minimise the overall number of animals used
    MOD spokeswoman
The images appear to show the live animals strung up as targets moments before being shot during a course at Nato's training facilities in Jaegerspris, Denmark.

The pigs are shot by marksmen to replicate battlefield wounds so military medical staff including British Army doctors can train in emergency surgery.

The so-called Operation Danish Bacon has been described as "impossible to justify medically, ethically and educationally" by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) said.

A spokeswoman for the MOD said: "Our military surgeons undertake vital training in Denmark where they learn specialist trauma treatment skills that save lives on the battlefield.

"All animals used in medical training are anaesthetised before they are treated and by participating in the Danish led exercises twice a year rather than conducting our own, we minimise the overall number of animals used."

The MoD argued that although the practice would not be illegal in the UK, approval would have to be obtained on a case-by-case basis from the Home Office.

The Government suspended British participation in the surgical training exercises in the summer of 1998 after they were brought to the attention of ministers.

The course is held at Nato's training facilities in Jaegerspris, Denmark
    [MAYDAY PRESS]

But the courses were re-instated after it was determined there was "no equally effective alternative" and that it was "entirely appropriate and, indeed, necessary" for military surgeons to carry out training on animals.

A spokeswoman for the MOD said it had not yet seen the pictures
    [MAYDAY]

A Peta spokesman said: "Eighty per cent of Nato allies have already ended the cruel use of animals in archaic military medical training exercises.

"Instead of shooting, stabbing, and blowing up animals, military personnel in these nations are trained to treat traumatic injuries using life-like human-patient simulators, such as the state-of-the-art Caesar military simulator."

Big deal. US Army Special Forces did that with sheep for those being trained as medics as far back as when I was in. And all the people whining are probably doing so before heading off to McDonalds for lunch.

The Nazis just used real people. They had the best medics in the world in their time. It takes balls.

Terrible waste of a good porker - could feed a family for months.

There's better options for the MoD.....here's a great candidate

And others no doubt, probably even from our nations. It's all a matter of quantity. I don't feel like searching for evidence for this now. Let's just keep on this topic...

Experimentation on live subjects is the key to progress.

An Italian aristocrat in the 18th century was sceptical about torture as a method of extracting truthful confessions so he killed his own donkey and then accused his butler of doing it. He had the butler tortured until the butler confessed to the crime and on the basis of this experiment outlawed torture in his district as a method of extracting confessions.

MOD stands for Men On Drugs or something like that. This training seems like something North Korea would do even with the pigs.

Didn't the world gain a lot from war and the Nazis. The more pain we suffer the better the world in the end. Get some politicians tied to that rack. Start with George Bush. He sent thousands of Americans to their deaths and those soldiers were willing to give their lives for their country. The least Mr. Bush can do is take the same risk to help the men in the military. Okay, it's Europe so send someone of your choice...

Britain was doing the same thing back in the late 60's and early 70's until public opinion had it stopped.

Those are Brits from that time. In a world that eats meat. Sends young men into war. Can think of a million things to get upset about before this would bug me.

We abuse humans much more than this and forget what we do to them. We've killed thousands of Iraqis for nothing in Iraq and we're more interested in what's on TV tonight. There's a lot of evil in the world done by man for 'progress' of some sort. We will even kill women and children and forget it and we do it every year. It's all a big joke. So when I brought up the Nazis, I brought them up because they really weren't that bad they we're just more aggressive and good at exploiting the world. We've seen our troops kill and rape women and children abuse people in ways equal to the Nazis and they are free walking the streets. They just don't do it in quantity. We forget the abuse done to blacks and others in the past. Cruelty is man's love. Most won't care about what we do to other living things until we are that other living thing.

If you are in the offshore business, or, go to sea for a living, there are mandatory safety course that have to be done. Sea Survival is one.
They tell you the effects of hypothermia due to water immersion, the signs to watch for, how the body copes with it etc.

All this knowledge was gained from captured information from Nazi experimentation.

Read about the infamous Japanese chemical and biological warfare camp, Unit 731, in China during WWII. Here they operated on Chinese men, women and children without anesthetic and performed all sorts of sick stuff.
The head scientist was given immunity and American citizenship in exchange for all the data. He died peacefully at home in the 1970's.

Farmers get compensated about £200 an animal if someone like a Royal Marine decided he needs a bit of sniper training on a live target.
    MOD settle the compensation.

Giraffe slaughtered at Copenhagen Zoo and fed to other animals

He was only 18 months old but Marius the young giraffe at Copenhagen Zoo had to go. Despite a campaign to save him he was shot in the head.
Officials outlined the reasons as a lack of space and the need to comply with European rules on in-breeding. The animal had to be put down to ensure a healthy giraffe population, they stressed.
After the shooting, there was a public carving of the carcass.
A British zoo had offered to give Marius a home and an online petition resulted in more than 25,000 signatures.
Instead he will provide the meals for other animals in the zoo with officials confirming the carcass would be fed to its lions, polar bears and tigers.
