Australia: Sex crime charges laid against man 'married' to 13yo girl

A Sydney man has been refused bail after being charged over a live-in sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

The pair were living together in Sydney's west.

Police sources say the 26-year-old man and the girl were "married" in an Islamic religious ceremony in the Hunter region last month.

The marriage has no legal standing in Australia because of the girl's age.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, allegedly met the girl in a suburb of Newcastle last year and began an ongoing sexual relationship with her.

They then moved in together in Sydney.

A nearby high school contacted police recently when the man tried to enrol the girl.

Detectives from the state's Child Abuse Squad arrested the man yesterday.

He was then charged with 25 separate counts of having sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14 years.

The man faced Burwood Local Court today, where bail was refused.

He will apply for bail again when he reappears next week.

The Child Abuse Squad says its investigations into the case are continuing.

Police have questioned the girl's parents, who they believe knew about the marriage.

Detective Inspector Peter Yeomans says it is a disturbing case.

"It's really really unusual," he said.

"We do have sexual assaults of minors... but this type of situation where it is almost sanctioned by a family, if that ends up being the case, is a very very unusual set of circumstances to happen within NSW."

same rule everywhere if naming the accused would give away the identity of a minor victim

Because it would/could also identify the child.

The occasional shock jock on radio will out them and take the rap..

    Not this time apparently.

Shit news reporting that calls him "a Sydney man". More accurate would have been "a paedophile, Lebanese Muslim scumbag baby-raper who somehow managed to slip through Australia's lax and totally crap immigration screening in order to obtain a student visa even though he can't speak English".

Detectives from the state's Child Abuse Squad arrested the man yesterday.

He was then charged with 25 separate counts of having sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14 years.

The man needed an interpreter when he faced Burwood Local Court today, where bail was refused.

He will apply for bail again when he reappears next week.

The Child Abuse Squad says its investigations into the case are continuing.

Police have questioned the girl's parents and believe they had a hand in arranging the marriage.

Detective Inspector Peter Yeomans says it is a disturbing situation.

But the NSW Minister for Family and Community services, Pru Goward, says it is not an isolated case.

"There are actually a significant number of unlawful, unregistered marriages to underage girls in NSW, particularly in south-west Sydney, western Sydney and the Blue Mountains," she said.

On the radio before she said there are a lot of instances of under 16 girls disappearing overseas for a 'holiday' then getting pregnant. When she turns 18 with a 5 - 6 year old child in tow, a husband miraculously appears.

Y'know, I knew some Lebs back when I was doing me first at UNSW, both sexes. Real nice people, I kid you not. Later, I knew some Leb restaurateurs- hard not to, when you live right next to 'little Lebanon" restaurant strip. Good fellas, honest and industrious, doing alright. Casually knew Nick Shehadie too (ex Mayor of Sydney), thru' Tatts- real good bloke, dinkum aussie too- even though he was Leb. My best mate in Melbourne is half Leb, via his mum- Geelong Grammaboy. I've had absolutely no problem with Lebs in my life, is what I'm saying.

What went wrong? I'm well out of touch with Sydney these days. I can only assume the ratbags are a result of more recent immigration.

My Gym teacher was a Leb, when he finished the day at school he went to work in his restaurant. Top guy and good chef.
The immigrants of the 50's - 70's were, I believe, genuinely grateful for the opportunity Australia offered. They walked around calling themselves "Aussies" in their broken English.
They got off the boat and went to work, it was that or starve,
The Lebs we see now (or their sprogs) got off the plane and put their hand out. Their kids grow up on the dole, identifying as Lebs and call white Australians "Skips".
    Different times, different results.

More likely 2nd Generation immigration identity issues.

1st wave of immigrants pose little but niceness. The following generations are the ones with complex psychological forces to deal with, that result in many suffering from Kunt Scumbag Disorder.

Well known and studied globally, particularly in France.

another candidate for a kick in the eye.... He may need a punch in the throat to go with it...

I mean honestly... WTF are you going to do with a 13 year old?

I get they have certain "cultural" things that we can respect when they come to the west.. but they need to understand we have "legal" things they must respect when they come to the west.

if that shit is so important to them... stay the fuck where you are and be happy..

Police are still investigating with a view to charging more people, e.g. the girl's parents, people involved in the (illegal) wedding etc

I don't think so, he had a student visa that can lead to residency. The authorities were alerted when he tried to claim guardianship of her, so that he could enrol her in school.
Child brides as young as 9 are legal in some islamic countries, he seemed to be acting as if he was unaware of the law in Australia.
