Woman dies after hijab gets tangled in escalator

Woman dies after hijab, hair get tangled in Montreal escalator

FIRST POSTED: THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 2014 11:37 AM EST | UPDATED: THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 2014 02:15 PM EST

MONTREAL A woman in her 30s is dead after her headscarf and hair became caught in a subway-station escalator.

A bystander found the woman lying at the base of the escalator at Fabre metro station in east-end Montreal around 9:15 a.m.

He alerted transit workers, who called police.

When first responders arrived, the woman was unresponsive.

"We tried to perform resuscitation on site, but we weren't able to save her," paramedic Bob Lamle told QMI Agency.

The exact circumstances of the woman's death weren't immediately clear, but Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said it appeared "her headscarf and her hair got stuck in the escalator."

"Was she strangled by her scarf or was she the victim of an illness before falling? It's too early to say," Brabant added.

Police shut down the metro station for the investigation.

Investigators were to examine surveillance video as part of their probe.

Hmm..I know it isn't funny to laugh at the dead, but this story seems a bit odd.

There have been several reports of this happening in recent past. If that neanderthal bunch insist on wearing those clothes - well, up to them.

Several reports of the same thing happening to non muslims involving non muslim clothing too.

Fact is it's not that uncommon.

But the non muslims didn't merit a thread from pea brain.

    Oddly.

I guess doing that runner and leaving kids in the lurch must still play on what there is of her mind.

Anyone's clothes can get caught up in machinery. People die and lose limbs all the time from stuff like this.

Isadora Duncan is a famous one who died from her scarf getting caught in the wheels of a convertible.

Too bad for that woman. It's sad.

Perhaps she fell while riding the escalator and scarf got caught up when she reached the bottom.

I guess they are trying to figure it out..

About it being funny or not .. If a social faction, national population, a religion, is laughing at your misfortunes is it right and proper to laugh at theirs? Of course not. Is it natural? Of course it is.

She was at the bottom of the escalator. It would be impossible for her hair and headscarf to get caugt up if she was standing so she might have been dead before her hair and headscarf got caught up. Or maybe she had a heart attack, or fell, or was pushed. Whatever, the woman died. RIP.

Some of these incidents are unexplainable and seem really odd after the event.

I remember many moons ago my dear old gran going arse over tit on the London underground escalator, she was wearing a kinda bell bottom trouser suit at the time and one of her legs got trapped until someone pressed the emergency button.

It was messy to say the least

I once fell on a London underground escalator. I was lugging a suitcase and I lost my balance when I turned to look at a loud, drunken woman at the bottom of the escalator. I only fell a short distance but the escalator was made of metal and I hurt my arm more than I would have expected. I reckon it's quite possible somebody could knock themself unconscious if they fell and their head hit first.

was sure there was a more recent incident similar to this one - child/hair and escalator. Maybe not.

Escalator girl dies after mall drama
The Nation on Sunday November 11, 2012 1:00 am
A 12-year-old girl whose head got stuck between an escalator and the upper floor as the escalator was moving at Future Park Rangsit in Pathum Thani, north of Bangkok, two months ago has been pronounced dead at Bangkok Hospital.
In September, Nuanprae's hair got entangled in the escalator while she bent down to watch a show on the second floor of the mall while standing on an escalator moving from the second to the third floor.

Was following a girl/woman riding a mosai today over on the dark side, wearing one of those things with slits. She could see only straight ahead like a horse with blinkers, still had to constantly strain her head because the peepholes were on the move just like her, and sometimes had to reach up to adjust them.

I think she was a danger to herself and other road users. In a civilised country she'd be stopped by the first cop on her route.

A friend of mine, while half pissed (maybe more than half), did a face plant on a London Underground escalator. He had even red lacerations from the grooves of the step firmly etched into one side of his black and blue face and a nasty gash across his nose. Quite funny to see - not for him of course.

I posted about this on another thread pointing out how the Thai seem oblivious to the fact they've just stepped off a crowded escalator and should stop immediately to look around. Someone posted a great example of what can happen.

    Will look for it

    here it is
