Row grows after US Marshals strip-search Indian diplomat

Washington: US officials admitted that they strip-searched a female Indian diplomat after she was arrested in New York in a new twist to a growing row that has seen India hit back with reprisals such as removing security barriers around the US embassy.
The State Department sought to calm tensions saying Thursday’s arrest of Devyani Khobragade was an isolated case, and should not be allowed to damage the close ties between India and the United States.

But confirmation from the US Marshals service that Khobragade was treated like any person detained in the bustling metropolis will likely only further fuel Indian ire.
Khobragade was detained for allegedly underpaying her domestic helper who is also an Indian national and for lying on the helper’s visa application form.

Her case has dominated the Indian press in recent days, and India has denounced her arrest while she was dropping her children off at school as “humiliating” launching a series of retaliatory measures against US diplomats in New Delhi.
State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf admitted it was a “sensitive issue” but insisted it was a “separate and isolated incident” which should not “be tied together” and allowed to affect broader “close” US-Indian ties.

Don't diplomatic officials and their extensions have immunity to such activity?

^ Assistant Consul, not exactly the Ambassador.
She has immunity as to her actions as a consul.

She is, in fact, the Indian Deputy Consul-General in New York, and thus does enjoy full diplomatic immunity. The NYPD bulls fucked up.

She should think herself fortunate to survive the incident without suffering any gunshot wounds, especially as she was in close proximity of a school.

The Indian Ambassador is in the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

She is assigned to the Indian Consulate in New York. As the Deputy Consul-General, she is the second highest ranking diplomat in the Indian Consulate. As such, she has full diplomatic immunity, not immunity limited to her actions at work alone.

I think you should go and wag your finger at them.

Mind you, If I were a US diplomat flying into India right now I think I'd make sure the KY jelly was handy.

State Department spokesman Marie Harf said yesterday that the U.S. has “conveyed at high levels to the government of India our expectations that India will continue to fulfill all of its obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.”
    What about India's expectation that...

They should immediately dismiss the US Marshall(s) who failed to observe their obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

...and cancel their pension. Just to set an example.

You're not usually this slow. A Consulate-General is a diplomatic office. It is a satellite to the Embassy in major cities with a large population from their country or to NYC, where the UN is situated. As the Deputy to the Consul General, she is a full diplomat, the second highest ranking in the facility, and has FULL, DIPLOMATIC protection.

A Consular Officer is a visa officer, a much lower-level employee, and one that only enjoys limited immunity, as you pointed out.

Her equivalent rank in the Embassy would be Deputy Chief of Mission. Number 2 in the Embassy.

He's right Davis. I've seen how badly they treat the hoi polloi. Some of them really are bastards.

But that's not to say this bint is, although she was probably trying to fiddle her X's.

It seems there's a family history of fiddling.

It is not that she was marred with controversies for the first time. She is alleged to have been involved in Mumbai's Adarsh Housing society scam, 2 years ago. As per media reports, despite owning a house in Mumbai, which was allotted to her under the state government's 10 per cent quota, she got another apartment at the Adarsh in 2005-2006. However, neither she nor her father were questioned about the same; but her father deposed before the enquiry commission of the Adarsh, saying that it was not their or their daughter's responsibility to inform the government about the apartments owned by them.

    Who is Devyani Khobregade?
My guess is she was telling her employers she needed loads of money to pay the hired help, and was quietly pocketing most of it while paying them below minimum wage.

    So f*** her.

Oh, and she hasn't got full diplomatic immunity, so nothing to see here, move along now, just another common criminal.

    Would appear not:

Harf said as India's deputy consul general, Khobragade does not have full diplomatic immunity, but rather consular immunity from the jurisdiction of U.S. courts only with respect to acts performed in the exercise of consular functions. She said the State Department had in September notified India in writing of the allegations against Khobragade.

    According to this http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/150546.pdf
She would then have a little blue plastic "Get your fucking hands off me card" and this (between the cops and India) argument wouldn't be taking place.
She was done on immigration fraud, not outstanding tickets, don't you think they would have checked with State before they picked her up?

It's been 5 days, don;t you think something like that might have surfaced by now? There's even a hotline to call and check.
She may have a diplomatic passport, but that's not the same thing.

I lived in India for three years. I know dozens of Indian diplomats, and hundreds of high-caste Indians. As a group, they are high on my list of the most despicable people in the universe.

My point was not that they are not scum, only that Snub is just babbling without having any knowledge of the subject.

This type of fraud on the United States and exploitation of an individual will not be tolerated," said Preet Bharara, Indian-born US attorney for Southern District of New York.
The plot starts to thicken. Me thinks Preet Bharara is not Brahmin

bsnub is spot on here, indians do treat their people like shit, and having spent 9 months in india i can vouch for the awfulness of their caste driven society, the sense of entitlement of the haves and the grim reality of life as a have not.

other than wound her bloated diplomatic pride, it wont do her any harm at all.

diplomats always seem to take advantage of their privileged status and even though i am no fan of the american way of doing things since 7-11, i find this incident strangely heartwarming.

I have not been to India, but I have worked with many Indians in the tech industry here in Seattle. I also dated an Indian girl when I was young. The caste system in India is appalling, and many of the Indians I met have actually had the balls to try and look down at me. I quickly shut that down. BTW I piss on fox news.
