Grace Jones, of Bermondsey, south [at]London, was born on December 7, 1899 and was the last living person in the UK to have been born in the 1800s.

Unmarried Grace, whose fiance died in the First World War, was also the sixth oldest person in the world.

She had a fall recently and died after hospital treatment. Her MP Simon Hughes said: “We are all very sad today but we pay tribute to Grace for her wonderful, vibrant and long life.” Her memory was undimmed until [at]virtually the end, he added.

Grace’s death came two weeks after Britain’s oldest man, Ralph Tarrant, died in Sheffield aged 110.

Ralph, a great-great-grandfather, had been married to Phyllis for 79 years until her death at 102 last year.
