Audio from alleged execution of Afghan insurgent by UK marines is released

Audio from alleged execution of Afghan insurgent by UK marines is released
    Friday, November 8

LONDON — A British judge has released audio recorded during the alleged execution of an Afghan insurgent by three U.K. soldiers.

The recording comes from video that was captured on a helmet-mounted camera. The marines are being tried at a court martial accused of the man’s murder.

Following a media request, Judge Advocate General Jeff Blackett allowed the release Thursday of the audio. He had previously refused to release the full video.

In the video — which was shown at the marines’ court martial — one marine rejects another’s offer to shoot the Afghan in the head as too obvious.

That marine then shoots the insurgent in the chest, turns to the others and says “I just broke the Geneva convention.”

One marine has said he believed the man was already dead.

    Marine guilty of Afghanistan murder

A Royal Marine has been found guilty by a military court of murdering an injured Afghan insurgent, in what the prosecution called "an execution".

The sergeant, known only as Marine A, faces a mandatory life term over the shooting of the unknown man while on patrol in Helmand Province, in 2011.

    Two other marines were cleared.

Brigadier Bill Dunham, of the Royal Marines, said the murder - the first case of its kind - was "a truly shocking and appalling aberration".

There were tears from their families as the verdicts were read at the Military Court Centre in Bulford, Wiltshire

Marine A, who will be sentenced on 6 December, was taken into custody, while the two other marines, known as B and C, are free to return to military service. An anonymity order granted last year to protect the men from possible reprisals remains in place.

    9mm pistol'

Brig Dunham: "It should not have happened, and it should never happen again"

Marine B had inadvertently filmed the murder, which happened on 15 September 2011, on his helmet-mounted camera and the footage was shown to the court during the two-week trial.

It showed Marine A shooting the Afghan prisoner with a 9mm pistol, and saying: "There, shuffle off this mortal coil... It's nothing you wouldn't do to us

He added: "Obviously this doesn't go anywhere fellas. I just broke the Geneva Convention," to which Marine B replies: "Yeah, roger mate."

On Thursday, a recording of a conversation between the marines in the moments surrounding the shooting was released by the judge

He had previously rejected an application by the media to release the video footage, saying it could be used as propaganda against the UK military.

During the court martial, prosecutor David Perry told the court it was "not a killing in the heat and exercise of any armed conflict... it amounted to an execution

Marines B and C were accused by the prosecution of being "party to the killing" and of having "encouraged and assisted" Marine A to commit the murder.

Marine A was convicted by a board of seven officers and non-commissioned officers.

At the time of the killing, he was an experienced sergeant, while Marine C was the most junior of the three. Marine B was new to the Helmand base where marines A and C were based.

Brig Dunham, deputy commandant of the General Royal Marines, said: "It is a matter of profound regret that in this isolated incident one marine failed to apply his training and discharge his responsibilities.

"What we have heard over the past two weeks is not consistent with the ethos, values and standards of the Royal Marines

It was a truly shocking and appalling aberration. It should not have happened and it should never happen again."

He said the Royal Marines would consider any impact from the case on the training given to its soldiers.

Judge Advocate General Jeff Blackett said the issue of the marines' anonymity would be re-examined at a later date.

    Under attack

The murder took place after a patrol base in Helmand Province came under attack from small arms fire from two insurgents.

The Afghan prisoner was seriously injured by gunfire from an Apache helicopter sent to provide air support, and the marines found him in a field.

in one conversation between Marine A and C about shooting the man, one serviceman is overheard asking "Anyone want to give first aid to this idiot?" before another replies loudly "Nope."

In another, Marine C was heard asking A if he should shoot the man in the head, but Marine A said that would be too "obvious"
Royal Military Police arrested the three marines in October 2012 after video footage was found on a serviceman's laptop by civilian police in the UK.

They first appeared at the Military Court Centre in Bulford in August, where they pleaded not guilty to murdering the Afghan national contrary to section 42 of the Armed Forces Act 2006.

Two further marines - D and E - had the charges against them dropped in February.

The case was the first time British forces have faced a murder charge in relation to the conflict in Afghanistan, said BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt.

Prof Michael Clarke, director of the Royal United Services Institute, said the Ministry of Defence needed to be transparent in cases such as this.
The only thing the MoD can do is not try to hide in cases that look as bad as this, and they're going to have to accept that if we fight these wars, there will be cases that we are not very proud of," he said.

Should have shot him in the back, and then claimed that he was running away. There again in this new type of warfare he could have been shot in the chest for wearing a suicide vest.

You can't send soldiers off to fight a war especially with religious savages in Afghanistan and expect them to behave like they are playing cricket. War is just that WAR. How do you fight a war in a civilised manner ?
They should never have been sent there in the first place.
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

That's not what got him convicted, is it? It's audio, video and some dick writing it all down in his diary.

Personally I could give less of a fuck, I'm sure this bloke will be short of nothing in the prison community.

Meanwhile the ragheads will continue to hit below the belt and our troops will be told to keep a stiff upper lip and play by the Marquis of Queensberry's Rules.

I would give them medals. Only fools and politicians believe 21st century warfare should be ethical, even against the lowest produce of humankind.

You can guarantee that if the boot had been on the other foot he would have been tortured, beheaded and his remains paraded for all to see.

If our troops aren't allowed to go in there and fight these arseholes properly, pull them out.

So the yanks can send drones in to kill targets, but when a soldier kills a (known insurgent) targets he gets locked up for life?

Not defending the guy shooting him, but gotta look at it from the soldier's POV. These guys were just trying to kill them, probably have mates killed by the other side with no regard for ethics. Although this soldier clearly did the wrong thing, but I think life in prison for killing an enemy is a tad harsh.

Yep, not only do the Taliban get another martyr, but they've taken another enemy combatant off the battlefield.

    Win-Win for them!

A Marine Sergeant paraphrasing Hamlet was quite interesting and British. An American Marine Sergeant would have said, "Suck on that, you raghead cocksucker."

No. But I doubt one of them would have been able to resist posting it on Facebook to impress his pimply faced girlfriend back in Kansas.

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
    So-oldier ~of~ the Queen!

    2) - 'It's nothing they wouldn't have done to us'. - yeah, they'd have beheaded you lads and strung your limbs out for the goats to eat.

These goat fuckers think nothing of shooting young girls for wanting educating but i would't mind betting that this piece of shits' family and connections start a law suit claiming millions for a war atrocity against the British and the silly EU will probably grant them it too.

What I find amazing is, the media are reporting this as an unheard of instance. Thats because no silly sod ever recorded it before. Im sure not all played by the rules in the ww2, Vietnam (we know that as fact), Korea, Falklands (from what I was told, they didnt), GW1 (I know we didnt) and Bosnia and Kosovo ( I know we didnt). This guy is nothing more than a political scapegoat to appease the western muslim population.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong

Any other incidents would you care to weigh this against?
