    NRA Lobbyist Shoots Elephant

NRA lobbyist shoots elephant in the face and then celebrates with champagne | The Raw Story

The NBC Sports network came under fire this week after it aired an NRA-sponsored program that included gun lobbyist Tony Makris shooting an elephant in the face and then drinking champagne.
Deadspin noted on Tuesday that the Botswana hunt had aired during this week’s episode of Under Wild Skies.
Makris is a longtime friend of NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre and is best known for orchestrating Charlton Heston’s rise within the organization.
In a video of the hunt, Makris spots an elephant in the brush, walks up and shoots it in the the face twice. After a short chase, Makris fires again and the elephant is dead.
The NRA lobbyist then takes a moment to pose with his .577 “Tyrannosaur” rifle and the dead pachyderm.
As the episode ends, the group of hunters enjoys a glass of champagne while watching the sunset.
“To hunt an elephant and to harvest and elephant and to bring the ivory back to camp is a very, very special occasion,” one hunter says.
Botswana announced in 2012 that an all-out ban on commercial elephant hunting would go into effect in January of 2014 over concerns of sharp declines in wildlife species.
The outrage over the NBC Sports broadcast comes as authorities in Zimbabwe this week said that poachers seeking ivory had used cyanide to poison at least 81 elephants.

Perhaps one of TD's resident gun nuts can explain the point of shooting an elephant that was just out minding its business in the wild?

There is no point whatsoever its just the actions of some sick Macho prick, however having spent quite a bit of time in Johannesburg South Africa , I can fully understand that sometimes a gun is a good thing for self defense .

It is much more fun to track down and shoot them scumbags, rather than shooting tame elephants in a barrel. But the serious money they pay for the privilege of shooting old, semi tame elephants (while it makes their penis no less pathetic) actually goes to some good things, and the park rangers only have to keep those half-men alive until they fekk off.

Am I allowed to say that?

    Sorry. I'll change it:

I'd like to shoot him in the face.

Kurgen, I could not agree any more , but if you notice on the photo the brave white hunter had a "back up" with another heavy caliber rifle just in case he fucked up with his first shot to down the "ferocious beast" , truly pathetic sad to say .

That's just fucking terrible. Why???? What makes some humans like this? I watched a hunting show one time. It was some asshole sitting in a tree for 2 days with a sniper rifle just to shoot some poor old black bear. Fucker shot it from about 200 yards away. Bear didn't have a clue it got hit and ran straight into a tree. And then the fucking caveman was jumping up and down hootin an holleran like he just hit the lottery.

I don't get it. I don't mind killing animals for food, but not for sport. Killing is not a sport, it's killing.

The jackass in this video needs to be shot because he is obviously a sociopath who enjoy's the rush of killing thing's. I wouldn't want him near my family.

What he should have done to prove his manhood (or lack thereof) is waited behind a bush with a bowie knife and when the elephant got close enough he could spring out and jump on it's back, slit it's throat, and then take a shower in it's steaming red blood....Or more likely just get his ass killed which would have been the better outcome IMO. What a DICK.

The arsehole did fuck up with his first shot. And his second. It took three for him to down the "ferocious beast" that was meandering around looking for vegetation to eat.

    He's a fucking toerag.

Although I did not agree with it I could understand the Masai tradition that you had to kill a lion with a spear to prove you was a "man", but this Macho abomination simply does not belong in the 21st Century , and then they say that the Masai was "uncivilized " .

The more I think about this the weirder it seems.

Fishing? Yeah, do catch and release or take it home to cook, I'll bring the tartar sauce.

Deer? No argument from me, they aren't threatened and you get a large supply of tasty venison.

Birds? Again no argument, shoot a pheasant or a quail or whatever and it is on the dinner table after being hung for the right time.

Vermin? Yeah, a farmer should happily blow away the rats and pigeons etc that affect his livelihood.

Elephant? Nope, I can't see any reason why somebody would take glee in shooting one of those unless it had gone rogue and was threatening his life or family or property. He's not going to eat it, he can't sell the ivory and he can't even take it home to mount on his wall. Total dickhead.

I might be corrected, but I was under the impression that African [and Asian] elephants fell under the govts/UN protection of hunters.....???

Still understood that local covert poaching goes on....less from a the proper Foreign White Hunter.

They didn't shoot the elephant in the face, but in the head. '4" above the eyes.' Nothing wrong with the coup the grace. That was an over 60 years old male, with one tusk only. Elephants have a dominant tusk like humans who are either left or right handed, he most likely lost the more important one due to use. Handicapped, and his reproductive life was behind him. Botswana bans commercial hunting starting from January 2014, until then hunters will flock to it. Because they can do and afford it. An elephant safari costs $ 37,900 in Botswana, and this price doesn't by far include all costs. Do the right thing and hunt trophies in Pattaya, for a small fraction of the money. african hunting elephant hunting facts and tips

Irrespective of how many times the more moronic members of the NRA appear to shoot themselves in the foot by lending support to wildly unpopular viewpoints or actions like this, the organisation appears to go from strength to strength.

it's the arrogance of some of the NRA's stances that's so deeply irritating.

The scary thought is perhaps they know they can be arrogant as they have more guns than anyone who might disagree with them?

Never have I hunted or even fired a gun and feel it is a shame to shoot a "old semi tame elephant" but the fact is they are really a big problem to the ecosystem in some areas of Africa.
Botswana's Chobe National Park covers approximately 11,000 square kilometres and has an estimated elephant herd of 70,000. International visitors to the park are often treated to an amazing scene of hundreds of elephants bathing in the Chobe River or frolicking on nearby plains. But biologists estimate that the park actually has seven times the number of elephants it can reasonably support over time. The result is a landscape within the park that is heavily degraded as elephants - while a delight to those on photo safari - are incredibly destructive as they uproot trees and trample vegetation. High elephant numbers also drive down total biodiversity, including other types of wildlife which tourists come to see.Too many elephants in African parks? - Opinion - Al Jazeera English

Yeah well maybe their govt should cull the large herds of worthless humans that cause considerable damage to the ecosystem of Africa as a whole. They they would be able to expand the park borders which would give that huge number of highly destructive, deserve to be killed by dickhead's, just plain old elephants more room to do their thing without the plague of the Earth (humans in case you are not following along with my rant) trying to control everything or destroy everything.
