17.28 Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has summoned a Cobra meeting, the BBC reports. The meetings are held when the Government is dealing with an emergency.

17.23 The Ministry of Defence says it is urgently looking at the reports that the incident involved a soldier. The incident occurred some 200 yards from the Royal Artillery Barracks, adjacent to Woolwich Common, the historical home of the Royal Artillery.

The barracks, also known as the Woolwich station, now houses a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards.

17.14 The witness who spoke to LBC, called James, says there were "brave women" present who were shielding the victim at the scene.
He tells the radio station: "We saw clearly two knives, meat cleavers. They were big kitchen knives like you would use in a butcher's. They were hacking at this poor guy. We thought they were trying to remove organs from him.
"These two guys were crazed, they were not there, they were just animals. They then dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road.
"They took 20 minutes to arrive, the police - the armed response.
"There was only a few people at first, then traffic began to build up because people were getting out of their cars to shout at them. They were taking no notice, they were standing there, I think they were proud of what they were doing.

Senior Whitehall sources have told the BBC that the Woolwich attackers are thought to have tried to film their attack whilst shouting "Allahu Akbar" - God is Great, says political editor Nick Robinson.

The men were said to have been of Muslim appearance.

The Prime Minister is expected to speak to the Home Secretary at 18:15 BST from a train to Paris about what is now being treated by government as a suspected terrorist attack, Mr Robinson says.

Well, maybe so. In any event a shocking attack that must have had a traumatic effect on the many witnesses.

Really, if you are English and read any of the papers from home, it really looks like the country is sliding from bad to worse. Crazy and unheard of things happening every day, things that never happened when I was 35 years younger.

Living in Thailand and seeing some of the winging that goes on regarding the Thais, it's a real pity to see that your own country has fallen so far.

Luke Huseyin, 32, who lives in a block of flats close to where the incident happened said: “I was at home and heard a big bang. I looked out of the window and saw a car had crashed.

“Then two black guys got out of the car dragging a white guy across the road towards the wall.

“One of the guys had a knife that looked about a foot long and a machete and the other bloke had a gun.

“They started slashing him up with the knife and hitting him in the stomach with the machete.

“I don’t think it took long before he was dead. “There were people passing by who were screaming and running away. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“When he was dead, they dragged him out into the road and left him there. It was strange, they didn’t run off, they just stood there as if they were waiting for the police.

“It must’ve taken about 20 minutes for the police to arrive, I think it must’ve been because they were waiting for armed police.

“The police officers got out of the car and the two black men ran towards them with the gun. The police shot them.

    “They fell to the ground."

Lou Peluola, 53, arrived on the scene shortly after the incident when he saw one attacker standing over a body before the police arrived 20 minutes later.

He said: "People were afraid asking: ‘where are the police?’ They took a long time to arrive.

"I panicked, rang the police and ran away."

Peluola saw the victim bent over on the floor with the attacker standing over him holding a 20inch knife.

He described the attacker as a "huge man, black".

Two people were today believed to have been shot by armed police after hacking a soldier to death with a machete in a suspected terror attack.

Home Secretary Theresa May tonight called a meeting of the Government's emergency Cabinet committee Cobra in response to the incident in Woolwich, south-east London.

The soldier, wearing a Help for Heroes t-shirt, was attacked with knives and meat cleavers following a car crash. It is claimed the two men who carried out the attack shouted 'Allahu Akbar', which means God is great in Arabic.

It is thought that the two men waited around for 20 minutes until police arrived and then tried to attack them - but were swiftly shot by armed officers.

Eyewitnesses said the 'crazed' men launched a ferocious attack and were 'hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him.'

Scene: One man died at the scene here in John Wilson Street, south London this afternoon while two were seriously injured

Two men were rushed to hospital this afternoon while another man died after apparently being hacked to death in Woolwich

Prime Minister David Cameron wrote on Twitter that 'the killing in Woolwich is truly shocking - I have asked the Home Secretary to chair a COBRA meeting.'

This afternoon the area’s MP, Nick Raynsford, told BBC Radio 5 Live he believed the victim of the attack was a serving soldier.
The man is believed to have been hacked to death after a car crash. The scene of the attack is just 200 yards from Woolwich Barracks.
Mr Raynsford said: 'We think a serving soldier was the victim. We don't know the circumstances surrounding the incident.

'We do know a number of weapons have been seized. They include a gun, various knives, and a machete, apparently.
'The police clearly had to take action in order to try and arrest these individuals.'
The Ministry of Defence said it was urgently looking at the reports that the incident involved a soldier but had no further comment.

Investigation: An air ambulance can be seen at the scene which is cordoned off after a soldier was hacked to death this afternoon

Probe: The incident is believed to have started after this car crashed. Fluid can be seen which has leaked from the car

Weapons: Forensic experts bag up evidence at the scene which is believed to include a number of weapons

Footage from a television news helicopter showed a large collection of weapons lying in the street in Woolwich following the incident.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said one man had died at the scene.
He said: 'Our staff treated two others. Both men were taken to hospital, one of them is in a serious condition, the other is not.'

One witness, identified as James, said he and his partner saw two black men attack the young victim with knives, including a meat cleaver.

'They were hacking at this poor guy, literally,' he told LBC. 'They were hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him.'
Fighting back tears, James said the men treated their victim as a 'piece of meat' after he was dead.

'These two guys were crazed,' he told the radio station. 'They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there.'

Killing: The attack happened on John Wilson Street in Woolwich, south-east London, this afternoon, close to the military barracks

Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford confirmed tonight that the two attackers were shot by armed officers.

He said in a statement: 'At approximately 1420 we were called to reports of an assault in John Wilson Street, Woolwich, where one man was being assaulted by two other men.

'A number of weapons were reportedly being used in the attack, and this included reports of a firearm.

'Officers including local Greenwich officers arrived at the scene and shortly after firearms officers arrived on the scene.

Probe: Police cordon off surrounding roads after a man was killed in Woolwich, south London, this afternoon

Military: The victim was a serving soldier and is believed to be based at the nearby Woolwich barracks

'On their arrival at the scene they found a man, who was later pronounced dead. At this early stage I am unable to provide any further information about the man who has died.

'Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police. They were taken to separate London hospitals. They are receiving treatment for their injuries.

'I can understand that this incident will cause community concerns and I would like to reiterate that we are investigating what has taken place today.

The incident occurred near the Royal Artillery Barracks, adjacent to Woolwich Common, the historical home of the Royal Artillery.

The barracks, also known as the Woolwich station, now houses a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards.

Woolwich Common remains a designated military training area. The shooting events at the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were held at a temporary venue at the Barracks.

Luke Huseyin, 32, who lives in a block of flats on John Wilson Street, Woolwich, close to where the incident happened said he watched two men murder a man before being shot

Machete killer granted asylum and living in Coventry

John Thuo starts a new life in city after admiting to immigration tribunal to killing between 100 and 400 people for Kenya criminal mob

A murderer who has admitted killing up to 400 people – many in horrific machete attacks – is living in Coventry after being granted asylum.

John Thuo, aged 27, came to the UK illegally in 2003 and despite attempts to kick him out a court has ruled that deportation is against his human rights.

For seven years he worked for the Mungiki in Kenya, a criminal mob behind some of the continent’s worst atrocities.

At an immigration tribunal he admitted killing between 100 and 400 people.
After he was tracked down, Thuo said: “It’s true, I killed a lot of people. I don’t like talking about my past.

“I feel guilty for what I’ve done. I feel remorse.

“I’ve started a new life here and I’m looking for regular work. If I go back they’ll kill me. They’ll behead me.”

Asked if he is monitored by the Home Office, he said: “No, I don’t have to meet anyone. I’m free.

“My life in Kenya is in the past. It’s a different world out there. Out there, all you can do is hope to survive. This is a better place to live.”

He lives rent-free in accommodation provided by the National Asylum Support Service and used to work as a removal man.

The Home Office has tried to deport Thuo in a series of hearings but it has been unsuccessful. Thuo claims that if he is sent back to Kenya he will be executed.

He told an immigration court in London that he was a senior member of the Mungiki in a Nairobi slum after being recruited when he was just 10-years-old.
In 2000 he was promoted to leader, training members and taking control of the slum where he ran a security racket.

In evidence he admitted his gang “torched people’s houses” and carried out female circumcision and public intimidation.

In 2002 he took part in a revenge attack on villagers who had killed two members of the Mungiki. He butchered two civilians with a machete.

In another incident he said he killed two police officers after members of the gang were arrested, one with a machete and another with a “big stone”.

The Mungiki – part gang, part religious sect – were outlawed in Kenya in 2002 following widespread outrage at their horrific crimes, in which victims were left as mutilated corpses.

Initially they were a peaceful protest movement in which followers wore dreadlocks, but the group transformed into one of the most feared organised crime organisations in the capital, Nairobi.
This country is beyond a joke, an utter farce of a nation.

This picture of a man with bloodied hands and carrying a knife and what looks like a meat cleaver has been published by ITV News.

According to the broadcaster he made a series of political statements and said: “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.”

The suspects were probably warned to put down the knives/cleavers and failed to do so.

No armed police officer is going to allow suspects who have just murdered someone into their space. As they were in possession of deadly weapons and didn't heed the warnings then they were quite rightfully shot.

2009: The two men shot by police are both still alive and are being held under armed guard in hospitals, the BBC's Nick Robinson reports.

2007: A police woman was left with "no choice" but to shoot one of the two suspected terrorists, witnesses say.

Speaking from Woolwich, the BBC's Chris Eakin says witnesses described how one of the men "rushed" at the police brandishing weapons.
