Thai woman's tragic end at Gateshead haulage yard

Thai woman's tragic end at Gateshead haulage yard
    19 May 2013

Newcastle College student Sureerat Srisasawan died alone only days before she was due to return home

A Thai woman died alone behind a caravan in a Tyneside transport company yard only days before she was due to return to the Far East.

Friends frantically searched for Newcastle College student Sureerat Srisasawan - known as Nan - after a series of Facebook posts alleging she had been the victim of domestic abuse.

But by the time she was found by her partner Robin Carr, she could not be revived, a North coroner heard.

Fellow Harley Davidson enthusiast Stuart Baxter told an inquest into the 21-year-old’s death that he had been so concerned by messages he received in the early evening of October 20 last year that he had called a women’s refuge to see if they had space for his friend.

He then drove the 25 minutes from his house in County Durham to her haulage firm home on Newburn Bridge Road in Gateshead to try to make sure she was all right.

“When I arrived at the yard the gates were shut and it was totally quiet,” he said.

“My phone rang as I was sending her a message and it was Robin. He said he’d had an argument with Nan.

“I said I was outside and he came and let me in. I asked where she was and he said he didn’t know.

“We walked around the yard and called for her to come out, then looked in the office and the other buildings.

“There was no sign. Then I went into the caravan and it looked like there had been a fight. I again asked, ‘Where is she?’ but he said he didn’t know.

“I said I was going to go look for her and drove up and down the road - then Robin phoned me and said he’d found her. When I got back the gates were locked and I couldn’t get in - but I heard him start shouting ‘Nan, Nan, no” and I rang the police.”

Mr Carr let Mr Baxter into the compound, and between them they began CPR until police and paramedics arrived, but she was declared dead at the scene.

Home Office pathologist Dr Peter Cooper said the 5ft 3in slightly built woman had no drugs or alcohol in her body, and there was no evidence she had been assaulted.

Det Sgt David Hurst said the death was initially investigated as potentially a murder made to look like a suicide, but had ultimately been ruled non-suspicious.

Robin Carr told the inquest he had met student Nan over the internet while living in Thailand in May 2011 and, despite his reservations, the couple - who were living “as husband and wife” - moved back to Britain so she could spend six months studying the workings of a transport company in a different country.

Nan was also enrolled on an English course at Newcastle College - graduating just two days before her death.

But Mr Carr said Nan hated Tyneside - “She thought it was a dump,” he said - and wanted to move to London, but the pair were set to return to Thailand, with flights booked for the following Saturday.

“I wasn’t her sponsor, I was her husband,” said Mr Carr, who lived in the caravan after separating from his first wife, with whom he had a 13-year-old son, seven years ago.

“She wanted to stay in England and get married.”

Mr Carr said that despite a considerable age gap the couple had been “very much in love” but Nan had been prone to violent outbursts, including cutting her chest with a knife the previous New Year’s Eve and - removing a set of false dentures to demonstrate what he claimed she had done - punching out his front teeth.

He also said Nan, the daughter of a senior Thai air force officer, had previously attempted suicide and talked of “wanting to be with her mum”, who died when she was just four years old.

Recording a verdict of death by misadventure, coroner Terence Carney said Nan had died as a result of cardio-respiratory arrest.

This all sounds a bit rum to me. Aside from the fact that this article has been written by a monkey with a typewriter (Nation intern perhaps?). After a fight and being smacked about, she then wedges herself behind a caravan?

A crazy bitch has passed away. Good riddance

False accusations suck. Let's hope Robin Carr finds a replacement with a gentler nature, maybe closer to his age.

What did the girl actually die from? I guess I am a bad reader because this keeps happening to me. What was her cause of death?

Sounds like some how she has got herself stuck behind a caravan. Fallen between van and the wall perhaps? Who knows - crap reporting.

moved back to Britain so she could spend six months studying the workings of a transport company in a different country.
I do find this amusing though. That would have been of great use in the bar.

    This is what it says:
