First strike warnings for sexual assault.

Three men who sexually assaulted two young women and a 12-year-old girl in separate incidents were sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday.

Jamie Daniel Frederickson, 32, was sentenced to six months' jail for indecently assaulting an 18-year-old schoolgirl outside Peggy Gordon's in New Plymouth in August.
He was sitting in a booth at the front entrance of the pub about 1am when he put his hand up the girl's skirt and inside her underwear as she walked past.
She yelled at him and kicked at him and he was subsequently ejected from the premises.
Judge Allan Roberts also gave Frederickson a first-strike warning.
    -----

At the same pub and about the same time of night in early February, a 22-year-old woman fell down as she was leaving and Werasak Rattananon, 32, a restaurant manager, offered to take her home.
She accepted the ride and they went and bought burgers from a food outlet across the road before getting into his car. They then made another stop, at Burger King, before Rattananon began driving towards his house.

When he turned off the one-way system, the woman asked what he was doing because he was meant to be taking her home.
No explanation was forthcoming and when they arrived at his house he asked her to have sex with him.
She refused and opened the car door to get out, but he reached across her, pulled the door shut and locked it.

Then he kissed her and forced his tongue inside her mouth.
She pushed him away and started to yell for help but he continued to assault her.

Eventually she escaped and ran to a nearby house, where police were called and found her with bruising.

Rattananon pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months' home detention, ordered to pay $2000 emotional harm reparation to his victim and given a first-strike warning.
    -----

Unemployed, schizophrenic Hawera man Jedediah Peter Iraira Koia, 23, was sentenced to 18 months' jail for having sex with a 12-year-old girl.
He had pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful sexual connection with a young person aged 12 to 16 and indecent assault.

Koia and the girl were socialising at his Opunake residence and, after consuming, alcohol began canoodling in the lounge area.

They went into Koia's bedroom but friends, realising what was happening, knocked on the door and suggested they should stop and go back to the lounge.
Later, they returned to the bedroom and had sex, which Koia told police he did not remember doing.
He also received a first-strike warning.

It's a bit like that in some places.

What's this first strike warning business? None of those sentences seem particularly strong.

They're not, considering. But we don't really have sensible sentencing in NZ.

What, was she in the 8th form?
To be honest, if girls are going to wear skirts so short theire arse cheeks are showing in places where guys are drinking beer they've got to expect some drunken lech is going to cop a feel every now and then.
Hint girls, if you're going to dress like a slut, expect to get treated like one.

If you read the article you'd know that the girl wasn't in "a place where guys are drinking beer".
Neither was she reported to be dressed as you describe.

Your fantasies are running riot again Koojo.

The second guy sounds Thai? Probably thought sexually assaulting Farang women was acceptable which it basically is in Thailand.

12 months home detention? I guess he will lose his job then and go on the welfare system, another burden on society.

I'm assuming that if he managed to get his hand up her skirt and into her knickers AS SHE WALKED PAST it was a short trip up the skirt.
Maybe you have a better explanation.

FFS Kujo, you're using the same argument as the Indonesian Mullahs use when they proclaim girls should wear a jilbab or expect to get raped.

Some men need to take some responsibity and not blame women (sluts) for their lack of control.

It's not a very pleasing sensation to have your bottom pinched on a sunny summer's day just because you are showing off a bit of leg, in a non slutty way.

I didn't know i had such a strong right hand slap....

Looks like short pants to me, but yes, you do see a lot of short skirts around here in the south where it's hot.
But still relatively few compared to population.

Regarding the light sentences handed out to some in NZ, Sensible Sentencing trust has expanded its publication to include a new website called Judge the Judges.

This group takes a more particular look at judges, rather than the criminal, and is pro-active in supporting the victim, not the victimiser, who in a large number of cases in NZ will get home detention, or if incarcerated, can get week-end leave and so on. In a hoigh number of incidents of lax sentencing offenders just go out and offend again.

Recidivism is a major problem among certain sections of the NZ criminal fraternity.

It's time to turn the tide.

So we're gonna judge the judges.

    Judge the Judges: Home

Christies Law is another group working for law reform in NZ

The Government has proposed some improvements to the Bail Act ( Bail Amendment Bill ), such as reversing the burden of proof for a wider range of offences. A reverse burden of proof means that the person charged with an offence has to prove that they are not at serious risk of reoffending, if released on bail, rather than the Police having to prove the person is not safe to be released. A number of other minor changes are also proposed.

Just on the news tonight, the NZ gov. and judiciary have condemned the new group, Judge the Judges.

How long will it be before the corrupt National party of NZ along with the corrupt lawyers, police and prison wardens start to intimidate and persecute those who ask only for transparent governance, an even playing field in the courts and a police force that doesn't indulge in drug running, sexual coercion and intimidation of innocents?

    The fight is on.
