Coronation Street actor Bill Roache has been arrested for rape.

    Wednesday, May 01, 2013 - 10:29 AM

Coronation Street actor Bill Roache has been arrested for rape.

The actor, who has played Ken Barlow in the TV soap for decades, was held at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, this morning.

Roache, 81, faces an allegation of raping an under-age girl in Lancashire between April and July 1967.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “An 81-year-old man from Wilmslow in Cheshire has this morning, Wednesday May 1 2013, been arrested by Lancashire Constabulary on suspicion of rape.

“The man will be interviewed at a police station in Lancashire during the course of the day.

“We take all allegations of sexual abuse extremely seriously and would encourage people with any information about sexual abuse, or anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, to come forward and report their concerns confident in the knowledge they will be investigated appropriately and with sensitivity.”

An ITV spokeswoman said the broadcaster was not in a position to comment, but it is understood Roache will not appear in the long-running soap while investigations continue.

How can you possibly get a fair trial for something that happened 46 years ago ? How many people can honestly say where they were a year ago today, who they were with and what they did ? I'm all for banging up perverts and for long periods of time but this just is wrong !
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

    It does seem problematic.
46 year old he said, she said.

I don't imagine there is any physical evidence. Difficult.

I agree with Big Fella! Not only 46 years ago but also between April and July! Could you account for your whereabouts everyday for 5months in 1967! You know maybe he did but then maybe he did not. How the hell could you be sure? I hope the prosecutors have significant evidence about this.

Hell I cant remember what I did 46 hours ago!

    ^ lol

    No statute of limitations?

She must have suffered horribly all these years, too frightened to talk up 30-40 years ago. Why didn't she wait till he croked? I suppose this rapist has some cash.

Stuart Hall has admitted indecent assault on several girls

it seems a sort of plea bargain as three accusations of rape are to remain on file (i.e. not prosecuted) so he will get ba sentence but not so severe as if those cases were proven

all these bloody BBC perverts are being outed now, as well as the Coronation street star
    I have reported your post

    depends on the evidence

you will get a fair trial - if the evidence is suspect there will be reasonable doubt

Hmm. Something like a 45 year old son or daughter could possibly be evidence. Age of the accuser at the time plus DNA evidence and it could be an easy case to prosecute.....

What we all tend to forget is, that these "victims" were all young lady's at the time. We are all "men" with only the faintest idea of what it may be like to be violated as a child.

Coronation Street’s Bill Roache charged with two counts of rape

Charges relate to alleged attack on a 15-year-old girl in 1967

CORRIE legend Bill Roache was last night charged with raping a 15-year-old girl.

Corrie’s Bill Roache charged with two counts of rape | The Sun |News

The 81-year-old icon, who has played Ken Barlow since the soap’s first episode in 1960, was dramatically arrested at 8am yesterday at his £750,000 home.
He was charged with two counts of rape in Haslingden, Lancs, in 1967.
He was released on bail but will be written out of the ITV1 soap while he battles the two charges. Cast pals were said to be close to tears.

Just weeks ago, Roache claimed in a TV interview that sex abuse victims “bring it on themselves”.
And referring to the Jimmy Savile scandal and other celebrity arrests, he told TV New Zealand’s One News: “I’m not blaming anybody for anything.
“But things were different in the Seventies. People were more tactile. You did things that today are regarded as wrong.
“A lot of these offences that you’re talking about are just inappropriate touching. Which 20, 30, 40 years ago, it was sort of understood that you did, in a way, that’s how you found out.
“Someone said you’d touched inappropriately, they said, “Don’t do that,’ and you didn’t do that. That was the end of it.”

Asked if he was worried he may not have known the ages of his girlfriends, he replied: “I think there’s a lot of people, who if they look back, they did things that today are regarded as wrong and in those days they weren’t. And that is a worry.”
His comments were slammed by abuse charities.
A former co-star said last night: “Bill is the King of Coronation Street — an institution, not only within ITV but across the land. Nobody saw this coming. The whole place is in shock.”
Roache was taken to a Lancashire police station yesterday after cops swooped on his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
He was bailed to appear at a court in two weeks’ time

Maybe the woman realised that she has been raped only recently. I met girls like this, real slow on then uptake.

So many stalwarts of the British entertainment industry were probably thinking of Gary Glitter - ' You mug, we're all fucking kids here and not getting banged up for it'.
Now they're all getting lined up and theres probably anotyher one tomorrow, unreal.

Don't agree at all with the system in the UK which allows for the naming of an accused person before conviction. Different if found guilty - throw the book at 'em.

Rolf Harris, Freddie Starr, Dave Lee Travis, among other 'celebrities' have all been arrested and had their reputations tarnished - but they haven't even been charged with anything (yet).

Why is it that the accuser in this type of case is guaranteed anonymity, while the accused has no such rights?

Stewart Hall has coped a plea admitted to a whole shitload of offenses. This whole celebrity thing must have been like a very special club. A real untouchable mentality. I wonder who is next?

I still cringe at the whole idea of trying to defend yourself decades later for something that is said to have happened sometime in a certain year.
