A Thai woman has been sentenced to nine years in jail by a Queensland court after becoming the first person in Australia convicted of trafficking a child for prostitution.
The 41-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to trafficking in the Supreme Court in Brisbane today.
She also pleaded guilty to procuring the prostitution of her daughter and 14 counts of indecent treatment of a child.
The offences occurred in Australia and began in 2004 when the girl was nine.
The court was told they continued over a seven-year period.
Justice David Boddice described the case as "shocking" and sentenced the woman to nine years' jail, ordering she serve four years before being eligible for parole.
Child trafficking in Australia carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
