ROME: In his most [COLOR=#0000FF !important]significant break[/COLOR] with tradition yet, Pope Francis washed and kissed [COLOR=#0000FF !important]the feet[/COLOR] of two young women at a juvenile detention centre — a surprising departure from church rules that restrict the Holy Thursday ritual to men.

No pope has ever washed the feet of a woman before, and Francis' gesture sparked a debate among some conservatives and liturgical purists, who lamented he had set a "questionable example". Liberals welcomed the move as a sign of greater inclusiveness in the church.

Speaking to [COLOR=#0000FF !important]the young offenders[/COLOR], including Muslims and Orthodox Christians, Francis said that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion in a gesture of love and service. "This is a symbol, it is a sign. Washing your feet means I am at your service," Francis told the group, aged 14 to 21, at the Casal del Marmo detention facility in Rome. "Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us," the pope said. "This is what I do. And I do it with my heart. I do this with my heart it because it is my duty. As a priest and bishop, I must be at your service" .

In a video released by the Vatican, the 76-year-old Pope Francis was shown kneeling on the stone floor as he poured water from a silver chalice over the feet of a dozen youths: black, white, male, female, even feet with tattoos. Then, after drying each one with a cotton towel, he bent over and kissed it.

Previous popes carried out the Holy Thursday rite in Rome's [COLOR=#0000FF !important]grand St John Lateran basilica[/COLOR], choosing 12 priests to represent the 12 apostles whose feet Christ washed during the Last Supper before his crucifixion. [COLOR=#0000FF !important]That Francis[/COLOR] would include womenwas remarkable, however , given that current liturgical rules exclude women.

The sanctimonious posturing is laughable.

On his first day they made this thing about how he got in a minibus instead of getting in the Mercedes or something.

It is just pious pantomime.

Here we have one of the richest and most powerful men in the world with the ability to effect fundamental change to make a better world and the papal press poodles are reporting on the relative significance of these stage-managed side-shows.

I think actually it is signifigant, viewing women, and addressing them as other than unclean creatures used only for breeding is important in the over- all scheme of things.

He washed her feet so the maid wouldn't have to mop the kitchen floor again.

She could have at least had the decency to Immac her legs first

Overpopulation?

The European birth rate is so low it cannot recover and will lead to the eventually extinction of the Europeans. Europeans were sold a bill of goods with that overpopulation propaganda. Because of that the Muslims are going to out-breed them right into Sharia law without a single shot fired.

Immigrants do change a country, and agree, in EU it won't be pretty if it isn't curbed.

But I'm speaking of the e drain on planet resources when the population doubles in less than a century mostly in Asia

But Eu consume quite a bit, all westerners do, USA Catholics too and now the hordes of Asia are chomping to consume madly. So it's time to curtail the population, before it is too late, and the Pope should lead the reform of birth control.
No way though as it is so dependent on re populating itself.
