Kids execute toddler. What's the world coming to?

Words fail me. Something is very wrong with society.
(And what are these kids doing with guns anyway)
De'Marquis Elkins Arrested: Teens Allegedly Kill Baby, Antonio, In Front Of Mother, Georgia Police Say

FOLLOW: Video, Antonio Santiago, Antonio Santiago Dead, Brunswick Police, De'Marquis Elkins, De'Marquis Elkins Arrested, Georgia Baby Fatally Shot, Louis Santiago, Sherry West, Baby Antonio, Crime News, Crime News

Antonio was just 13 months old.
BRUNSWICK, Ga. The mother of a baby shot dead in his stroller took one look at a teenage suspect's jailhouse mugshot Saturday and said he was definitely the killer. Yet an aunt of the teen said he was eating breakfast with her when the slaying took place.

Despite the conflicting stories, police have charged 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins with murder, along with a 14-year-old suspect whose name has been withheld because he's a juvenile.

Brunswick police spokesman Todd Rhodes said even though Elkins' aunt provided an alibi, authorities have good reason to bring the charges.

"That's what she's saying, but the evidence we're looking at says something else," Rhodes said, though he would not elaborate.

Also Saturday, police in this coastal port city released 911 recordings from neighbors who sobbed and pleaded for help right after 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot in the head a few blocks from his mother's apartment.

Sherry West said she was pushing her baby in his stroller as she walked home from the post office Thursday morning. She said a teenager, with a younger boy behind him, approached and asked her for money. West said when she told him she had no money, the teen drew a gun and said: "Do you want me to kill your baby?"

The gunman opened fire and West was shot in the leg, while another bullet grazed her left ear, she said. She watched helplessly as the gunman shot her son in the face, she said.

Two teddy bears, a vase of flowers and a decorative cross had been left Saturday against a wooden fence near the shooting scene.

Katrina Freeman said Saturday the shooter can't be her nephew, Elkins, because he showed up at her house Thursday at 8:15 a.m. roughly an hour before the killing. She said she cooked eggs, grits and sausage for breakfast and that Elkins accompanied her and her children to run errands when they left at about 11:30 a.m.

"He was with us the whole time," said Freeman, adding that she gave police the same account of her nephew's whereabouts. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is innocent."

The slain boy's mother said she picked the gunman out of a photo lineup of 24 mugshots police brought to her Friday. When a reporter showed her the photo of Elkins taken when he was booked into the Glynn County jail Friday, she wept and nodded.

"He killed my baby, and he shot me, too," she said.

At her apartment Saturday, West had filled several bags with her son's clothes and diapers to donate to charity. She said she hopes prosecutors pursue the death penalty in the case.

"My baby will never be back again," West said, sobbing. "He took an innocent life. I want his life, too."

In 2008, West's 18-year-old son was stabbed to death in an altercation in New Jersey. Prosecutors said the stabbing was self-defense and did not file charges.

In Georgia, police said they are still searching for the gun. No eyewitnesses have come forward.

In the 911 recordings, two callers said they heard gunshots and then saw West take her son out of his stroller, lay him on the ground and try to revive him using CPR.

"Yes, I heard the shots. Somebody shot this child," said one sobbing caller, who told the operator there were three shots fired. "She's got him on the ground. Please, we need everything we can get."

The 911 operators asked the callers if the boy was breathing. Finally, a man in a grave voice, answers: "No, the baby's not breathing." He says the child was shot "right between the eyes."

A woman can be heard screaming in the background just before police arrive. Sirens drowned out her cries.

Elkins' relatives said Saturday they don't know if he has an attorney. His older sister, Sabrina Elkins, said police arrested him as he came to her home Friday.

"The police came pointing a Taser at him, telling him to get on the ground," she said. "He said, `What are you getting me for? Can you tell me what I did?'"

The suspect's sister said he returned to Brunswick a couple of months ago after living in Atlanta for a while. While he wasn't enrolled in high school, she said, he had been taking classes to earn his GED.

"He couldn't have done that to a little baby," Sabrina Elkins said. "My brother has a good heart."

Hate crime? Georgia has had some high-profile black-on-Latino hate crimes in the past.

    They had guns?

Why would I read reports of kids in 1700s london in relation to this incident?
What the fuck has that got to do with anything.
I would like to think the world has moved on.
When was the last time you heard of a cold blooded execution on the street, of a toddler, by two children, in front of their mother?
This is a whole new twist.

If the kids get found to have did it, I hope that the person who gave them a false alibi gets charged with perverting the course of justice , a charge that can carry a long jail term

The story gets weirder. The toddler's mom's eldest daughter says the mom is mentally ill: Daughter of Brunswick victim, Sherry West, questions mother's story | firstcoastnews.com

Also, the murder weapon has been located, in water.

Maybe, maybe not. The murder weapon was found in a pond a few kilometers away from the scene, and it's difficult to believe the mother could have made it that far and dumped the gun herself. The daughter interviewed (link above) may have an ax to grind.

They both got out. One is back in for breaching his release conditions (going back to the North West) and for possession of child porn.

Georgia man jailed for life for shooting baby

De'Marquise Elkins was also sentenced for shooting a pastor 10 days before the murder

A US teenage robber who counted down to shoot a baby dead after his mother refused to hand over her purse has been jailed for life without parole.

De'Marquise Elkins, 18, shot 13-month-old Antonio Santiago, who was in a pushchair, between the eyes on 21 March this year in the US state of Georgia.

Elkins was spared the death penalty as he was 17 at the time. He showed no emotion as he was sentenced.

The mother of the dead child said Elkins had taken "the love of my life".

During Thursday's sentencing, the judge handed down the maximum sentence.

He imposed an additional 105 years in prison on other charges, including 30 years for Elkins' shooting and wounding of a pastor outside a church, 10 days before killing the baby.

    Antonio's murder appalled the nation.

    'Cruel and unusual punishment'

The jury in the town of Marietta, Georgia, last month found him guilty on 11 counts, including two counts of felony murder and one count of malice murder.

During the trial, prosecutors said Elkins had approached Antonio and his mother, Sherry West, to demand cash.

When she refused, Elkins twice threatened her baby and counted down from five as Ms West pleaded that she had no money.

She tried to cover her child with her arms as the gunman fired a warning shot, a bullet into her leg and then shot Antonio.

On Thursday, Ms West delivered a victim statement, made to rhyme like a poem, about the loss of her son.

"His first word was never heard. His first sentence was never said," she told the court through tears. "He never got to sleep in a toddler bed."

Defence lawyer Kevin Gough said afterwards that the sentence had been harsh.

"Life without parole for a juvenile, our position remains, is cruel and unusual punishment," he said.

The defence team said Elkins had been neglected by a mother who struggled with drug abuse and sometimes left him home alone without food.

Elkins' accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, is to be tried later for his role in the death of Antonio.

It is a harsh sentence, but then this is an exceptional crime by a chap who has demonstrated a very casual attitude to taking the life of another human. Society deserves long term protection from this individual and this what the sentence provides.

you really think this is worse than spending the next 40-60 years living in an cage, where you will be subject to the full horrors of lord of the flies without the hope of ever escaping. That is the cruel and unusual part of prison in America... and it a major blot on their character.

He acted like an animal and should be treated like one, would you rather he be given counselling, given a pat on the back and released back into society like in the UK to engage his bestiality on other innocent victims. You bleeding heart liberals are the reason why we have these sick bastards in our society, send all the sickos to the gas chamber and let our children sleep easy

Well, when a country starts giving all it's resources to special interest groups, not much left over for public services. Besides, ever taken care of a toddler? Murder does cross your mind and anyone could suffer from the emotional stress when there is no support.
I'd say things are improving generally for humanity. 2000 years ago children were raped and otherwise tortured for public amusement.

    It is a harsh sentence,
    Are you fucking JOKING?
What about the death sentence, would that be harsher?
Because That's the sentence he passed down to an innocent child, in cold, calculating blood.
How the FUCK is life a harsh sentence for an animal like that.
It should be life with hard labour.
I admit the death sentence would be too good, but at least society wouldn't have to feed and house the little animal for the rest of its life.

What are you trying to say?
It's OK because toddlers can be annoying and anyway 2000 years ago they were raped and tortured for public amusement?
