Egypt protesters torch buildings, target Suez Canal

(Reuters) - Egyptian protesters torched buildings in Cairo and tried unsuccessfully to disrupt international shipping on the Suez Canal, as a court ruling on a deadly soccer riot stoked rage in a country beset by worsening security.

The ruling enraged residents of Port Said, at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, by confirming the death sentences imposed on 21 local soccer fans for their role in the riot last year, when more than 70 people were killed.

But the court also angered rival fans in Cairo by acquitting a further 28 defendants whom they wanted punished, including seven members of the police force, reviled across society for its brutality under deposed autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

We riot and burn to free ourselves from a despot.

Then we riot and burn because we don't like the outcome of elections.

Then we riot and burn because we disagree with court judgements about soccer riots and killings.

Next we'll riot and burn because the economy has died?

Do we just like rioting and burning? Building is such a schlep.

Messing with the canal is a good way to get attention.
Might not be the sort of attention you want though..

The whole ME and NAfrica is going to hell in a handbucket. wonder who'll be blamed this time? The west, of course.

So much for the rosy 'spring'. It was never even possible. But then, reality is such an irritation if you're a modern liberal.

Guess it's time for the imperial powers to reclaim their old colonial territories within the broader region......and civilise the brutes.

If I recall my history - these same populations were quite civilised before the West had it's way with them.

No substitute for the romantic notion of "Orientalism".
