Brazil night club fire kills 245 in Santa Maria

At least 245 people have died in a fire that swept through a nightclub in a university city in southern Brazil, police and officials say.

Local media say the fire began when a band let off fireworks at the Kiss club in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul.

Reports say panic spread as people tried to get out. Many victims reportedly died from inhaling toxic fumes or from being crushed.

The fire is now out and bodies are being removed from the scene.

President Dilma Rousseff, who cut short a visit to Chile and was returning to Brazil, said everything possible would be done to help the injured and the families of the victims.
In a tweet, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Tarso Genro, said it was a "sad Sunday" and that all possible action was being taken in response to the fire. He would be in the city later on Sunday, he added.

A firefighter told BBC News he had never seen such a tragedy in his life, with the victims "so young".

The priority for the authorities is now to identify the dead with many distressed relatives arriving at the scene, but in the hours ahead the focus will turn to the cause of this accident and safety procedures at the club, the BBC's Gary Duffy reports from Sao Paulo.

    'Ceiling on fire'
The fire broke out some time after 02:00 (04:00 GMT) when between 300 and 500 people are believed to have been in the club, where a band was playing.

Thick smoke engulfed the venue after acoustic insulation caught fire, officials say.

Just saw the news, Horrifying. Is that the biggest nightclub fire yet?

RIP all those poor young people, peace to their relatives and friends.

    Fireworks/ Bandits? Insane.

Apparently a musician let off a firework in the place, same as in Thailand (Santika?)
Very similar, only one exit open.

Half the people in there died, out of about 500 or so clubers.

Would not bet against that, if you unlock the fire doors someone might sneak in.

Are the news reporters mentally retarded or is that the conversation between you and your wife?

FFS If I had a wife with that command of English the very least I could do is speak normal English to her in order that she could improve.

Certainly wouldn't be the first [related] story regarding chained/locked exit doors in crowded public venues...if this was the case in Brazil.

Sixteen face charges over Brazil nightclub fire

Investigators have been combing the nightclub for evidence

Sixteen people will face criminal charges in connection with a deadly fire at a Brazil nightclub in January.

More than 240 people were killed when insulation foam caught fire and spread toxic fumes through the packed venue in the southern town of Santa Maria.

Police said the blaze started when the singer of a band held a firework close to the ceiling, which then caught fire.

The singer, the band's producer, the club's owners, and fire officials will be charged with negligent homicide.

A police report published on Friday said dozens of eyewitnesses reported seeing the singer on stage holding the firework which triggered the blaze.

    'Grotesque'

Attempts by the singer and a security guard to extinguish the fire failed when the extinguisher they used did not work, the witnesses described.

Many said that the security guards at the Kiss nightclub at first tried to stop people from leaving the club.

The fact that the club only had one door was described by the investigators compiling the report as a "grotesque safety failure". Escape routes and lighting in the club were also found to be inadequate.

The club was found to be overcrowded. Eyewitnesses reporting more than 1,000 revellers packed into the venue, which had a licence for fewer than 800.

All of the 241 victims were found to have died of asphyxiation as toxic fumes from the insulation foam quickly spread through the club. Police believe that five of those killed were people who had gone into the club to try to rescue others.

More than 600 people were injured.

The fire, and the lack of safety precautions at the venue, have prompted widespread concern about Brazil's ability to host major sporting events in the next four years.

The 2014 World Cup is set to be played in 12 Brazilian cities, while the 2016 Olympics are to take place in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's Congress is set to revise legislation in an attempt to strengthen safety regulations ahead of the World Cup.
