Rape : "something that God intended to happen".

Outrage over US politician's pregnancy rape remark
    Nick Pearson
    October 24, 2012

A US Senate candidate has caused outrage by suggesting that pregnancies that result from rape are "something that God intended to happen".

A US politician in a close race for the Senate may have scuttled his election chances after suggesting that pregnancies that result from rape are "something that God intended to happen".

Republican Richard Mourdock was neck-and-neck in the polls with Democratic congressman Joe Donnelly but has been panned for his controversial remarks.

Mr Mourdock made the statement while describing his position on abortion during a debate on Tuesday night, local time.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realise life is that gift from God," he said.

"And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

Congressman Donnelly soon released a statement criticising Mr Mourdock, who is seeking to represent the state of Indiana.

August 20, 2012: A US congressman running for higher office has caused a storm by saying that pregnancies resulting from sexual assault are rare.

"The God I believe in and the God I know most Hoosiers (people from Indiana) believe in, does not intend for rape to happen, ever," he said.

"What Mr Mourdock said is shocking, and it is stunning that he would be so disrespectful to survivors of rape."

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has also distanced himself from the remarks just days after appearing in a commercial for Mr Mourdock.

Mr Mourdock could be the second Republican senate candidate who has undermined his odds of getting elected by making comments about rape.

In August Missouri congressman Todd Akin said in a television interview that pregnancy rarely occurs from "legitimate rape".

Mr Akin went from being a heavy favourite in the Senate contest to an underdog after the remarks.

Richard Mourdock On Abortion: Pregnancy From Rape Is 'Something God Intended' Indiana GOP U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock declared Tuesday night he opposes aborting pregnancies conceived in rape because "it is something that God intended to happen."

Debating Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) in their final Senate race showdown, a questioner asked them and Libertarian candidate Andrew Horning to explain their views on abortion.

Moron, but then again I'm sure he appeals to a 'certain demographic' as evidenced by some posts here...

What a bunch of crap...when God's plan involves rape, people just say, 'oh, that God...works in such mysterious ways...bless'. But when *my* plan involves rape, it's nothing but prison and sex offender lists.

Anyway, we should put God on trial for accessory to rape. The Bible says "go forth and multiply" - it doesn't say "go forth and multiply with a willing partner."

It beggars belief that a person of sound mind could possibly make such remarks so it really comes as no suprise they are spouted from a low life politician.

Is it really a necessity on one's CV to have the word 'Idiot' included when running for the US Senate i wonder?

Any country which has a major religious following is completely buggered so if one wishes to become part of the political stage then Republicans/Democrats etc: drop the god crap.

Mourdocks independent remark was totally in poor taste and should be rebuked. I am thankful that it is not reflective of the Republican party as a whole.

It's not too far off, though, is it. Romney (who himself has absurd personal beliefs) is still supporting him. And hardly a week goes by without more anti-science, fundamentalist insanity from these idiots. I'm not sure if it was posted here but it was only a few weeks ago that Congressman Broun was claiming that evolution, the big bang theory and embryology (??) were lies 'straight from the pit of hell'

Luckily he doesn't do anything where these beliefs might matter like, for example, sit next to fellow mentalist Todd Akin on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology....

These people are insane. The Texas Taliban have turned the Republican party into an international joke and they are doing their level best to do the same to your country. It ought not to be the case that being a Republican is an embarrassing secret but with jerks like these calling the shots, it can't be anything but.

FFS, it's a proven fact that 9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape.

Maybe Koojoo wasn't trying to insult him? Maybe he was just happy to have some company? Have you considered that?

I think it may be fair to say that in the 21st century anybody, especially a politician who supports the existence of god is a suitable case for treatment and should be rounded up and taken to the funny farm, yes and that includes priests, vicars, the pope and suchlike.

Churches could remain open to assist the poor but woebetide if any of them give thanks to god.

If politicians wish to be taken seriously and have at least some credibility along the line then they should stop doing a 'Tony Blair' and turning to god when things get a wee bit awkward.
